- It’s been three years since Colts QB Andrew Luck shocked the sports world announcing his retirement. The former #1 Draft pick was 29 years old - and coming off a season he set career highs, brought the Colts back to the playoffs, and won Comeback Player of the Year. But he was coming off a string of injuries. So why did Luck retire? What is he doing now? Seth Wickersham spent the past five months visiting Luck in search of answers.

Could of been easily one of the greatest ever... thanks colts for building a terrible team around him
You mean thanks to Ryan Grigson.
You mean, the O line was garbage
The Bengals are doing the same thing with Joe Burrow.
I think he was too weak he didn't have the grit he wasn't made for the NFL
@@dennisperry4836 that’s SURE easy to say while you type on your keyboard. #pathetic
I say good for him. He listened to his body, and he deserves to live life as he sees fit
Because he didn’t want to be 35 and not able to walk? Dude had a dam punctured kidney he was peeing blood no sane person wants to deal with that. Personally I wouldn’t spend more than 8 years in the nfl. Sigh that big contract play it out then retire
what about brad? them 8yrs is sellin yaself short af lol
That’s the thing someone who thinks like that would never make it in the league
@@chrissantos5580 tell that to Andrew luck Calvin Johnson Barry sanders and many others who get tf out before they become vegetables. There’s a reason the average nfl career is 4 years
@@LuckyJackson2020 if Brady played behind lucks offensive line and suffered the injuries he did he wouldn’t be in the league right now. 8-9 years is the optimal amount of time you should play in the league. Rookie contract played out and biggest contract played out. Go home and retire before you’re not able to walk
What a phenomenon in sport history we’ve witness the greatest of the greats walk away when greatness was nearly certain for them. To walk away from a prestige position such as being a QB for a professional team, especially a professional team that was led by a current Hall Of Famer (Peyton Manning) is amazing. I always admired people who can walk away when everything are at their disposal, it changes how we value things.
A team can’t be led by “a current HOFer” you meant to say “a team that was led by a future HOFer”
Colts fumbled his career. Had he’d been protected during his career he’d still be playing I think
AL made $109M from the NFL. At the end of the day that’s what matters. His family is good for life.
I identify with the process of dealing with chronic pain. It’s all encompassing. Great piece, and great example for young athletes. Fame is fleeting and there is more to life than sports/work.
It's interesting to me, this story and the chatter now. I don't remember being, or others who weren't really just heartbroken Colts fans, being surprised when he retired. He'd missed an entire season with an injury one year prior, and was once again dealing with injuries that might derail a season.
I was far more surprised when Barry Sanders stepped away at the time, to say nothing of the draw dropping reaction to Chris Borland. I felt sad when Luck tapped out, the game would miss him, but never wondered "why" or remotely questioned his toughness or commitment.
I don't blame anyone for retiring on their own time with football. The NFL is absolutely brutal.
Love to see as a coach in Chicago, Justin would learn so much! Happy Andrew finding happiness after football!!!
Basically, Ryan Grigson cost our Colts one of the best young quarterbacks of the past generation by not protecting him. SMH!
He is smart enough to know when to stop. Good for him
Thanks a lot Grigson.
You give a quarterback no offensive line and draft him no help then expect him to be Superman, this is what you will get.
He had weapons such as TY and they tried free agents
He really was going through a lot
who cares. he was going through alot but still could walk away from his job. let me quit my job and im fucked
@@LuckyJackson2020 whos fault is it that you’re a worker? 😂 wth kinda comment was that
@@JaeRocReacts lmao lucky has a loser mentality 🤣
@@LuckyJackson2020 You could get another job and guess what, that's what Andrew did
@@LuckyJackson2020 you’re also not an NFL QB??
God bless you Andrew Luck for walking away finding yourself and giving back to what he loved
They never gave this man a proper o line in all the years he played in NFL colts have been an embarrassment since the drafted him
Because the colts offensive line was trash 😂
This
Not even a colts fan but I do miss watching him play
Jim Irsay was too coked up to care if Andrew Luck was getting obliterated on the field every season. Now he's spending every year looking for the next Andrew Luck. As they say, you don't know what you got until it's gone.
Well they did Peyton manning dirty so 🤷🏾♂️
"Jim Irsay was too coked up to care"... now in the Jeff Saturday era ya i think this sums him up
ill never forgive Irsay or Grigson for ruining this mans life
I think Playing 6-7 years then retiring before they are seriously injured will become the norm. The CTE issue has got to make one think.
Thanks for everything Andrew. Your a HOF QB in my book. Go Colts 🙏
Selfishly as a titans fan I was ecstatic when he retired 🤷♂️
I bet he was the owner of the titans lol
Don't blame him for retiring. But the timing was horrible. He should have done it in the off-season thats forsure.
This was a great jawn
It just be like that sometimes!
So unfortunate that he wasn't drafted by a top tier football team.
Good article. I miss Kenny Mayne or Rick Reilly doing it tho not that boring guy
"Grigson"
We needed Luck, but we were unLUCKy
If he had the weapons that Peyton did... They may have won a few Superbowls!
He had nothing. Nobody. Irsay needs to be ashamed of wasting such a great well-rounded player!
One name that Peyton had that Andrew never did... Jeff Saturday. Probably one of the best to ever snap the ball!
Vid would have been way better just showing 5 minutes of Luck taking NFL hits!
Courage? Hmm
2:47 sure was abrupt, to go from the voice over & nice montage footage to some short necked middle-aged white guys from sports radio
Slow news day at ESPN eh?
Because the Colts don’t deserve him
when u got mils you can make that decision
Not tough enough....At the end of the day that's what it comes down to.
Luck has to look in the mirror.
cause he didn't want to he risk his body anymore harm for the fixed League that why he retire end of store 😂
He should’ve been a Cowboy
I'm glad he was selfish because people don't really appreciate you like that. Usually once you're gone.
Set the colts franchise back…bet they wish they picked someone else. You want a Stanford graduate, you get Stanford results…quitter.
Why are you guys all of sudden covering this again? As a Colts fan I couldn’t care less about this now. Old news.
Let’s be honest… he was massively overrated and his stats in the league were nothing special at all. Guys like Lamar, CJ Stroud, Jaylen Hurts and Russell Wilson etc are a 1000x better than he ever was.
He would never have been one of the greatest, he ran too much and running qb's do not last long in this league. Running works in college but not the NFL. He certainly had the ability but he did not understand his limitations. He also could not deal with management that do not care about players. Think about it Andrew, they dumped one of the greatest qb's ever to make room for you. I do however question the timing of his decision. I understand he stuck it to management, but he also stuck it to his teammates.
He quit on his team right before the start of the season. Glad he’s gone, hopefully that quitter never steps foot in an nfl stadium again
He violated his contract, hurt his shoulder snowboarding, quit on the team right before the season and STILL GOT PAID.
I'm no longer a fan.
Then you didn’t deserve him if you feel that way.
@@KWCline91 deserve? He was an overrated choker just like Peyton.
Good f**kin riddance.
Luck was overrated and everyone needs to admit it 😂😂😂 SMH
You clearly didn’t watch him play
@@Eshan686 yeah this dude prob thinks someone like lamar is better. cant ever take these ppl seriously
@@Luminous03 he’s gonna be remembered for that 1 year...Luck could of had a nasty 15 year career
Luck was one of the greatest talents of his time. He was a complete package: mobility, arm strength, accuracy, intangibles, etc. It was all there. He was not overrated.
We “Indianapolis” Never Liked Andrew Luck Anyway
Speaking for ALL the ppl of Indianapolis we don’t gaf unless he coming back
Which is why y’all don’t deserve a qb. Spoiled with Manning, Luck, and Rivers. Continue to suck now
Speak for yourself
Blah Blah Blah. Quitter, who quit on his teammates on the eve of the season and the media acting like he’s some darling. Gimme a break
Someone doesn’t know football
@@darnell16player tf you mean he quit. Hop off his nutz loser
@@Kipmoney_ you are a complete idiot. Dude had no o-line protecting him to the expectations of a oline that’s number one.
Two, he had multiple injuries and his shoulder didn’t heal properly and that is the moneymaker for QB’s.
Three, he had some old habits when he was recovering and the organization sure didn’t help with better protection.
If you can’t see these then you are devoid of empathy, help and brains. Grow a heart you moron
@@darnell16player that’s part of the game clown. He got paid to do job and quit before the season save it.
@@Kipmoney_ Your take shows your devoid of empathy and lack of any intelligence for the situation. You’re a idiot now and forever a complete and utter fool. Luck could move in his day but his problem was not being slippery he would take some shots that QBs shouldn’t take because of his weird running style he would run like upwards like Mike Alstott for whatever reason lol
