Living things have engineered some pretty awesome materials, but I'm not sure anything measures up to spider silk. It's as strong, as stretchy, and as resilient than even humans' most advanced creations like Kevlar and steel. So how do these awesome arachnids weave such an incredible substance using nothing but their rear ends? And… what IS this stuff? I went to meet Dr. Cheryl Hayashi, one of the world's experts in spider silk, to find out.

When you think about it, spiders were communicating through the web long before we were 🤔 🕷 🕸
I really enjoyed traveling to Dr. Hayashi's lab to feature some of her spider science. Should I do this kind of thing more? Leave a comment and let me know!
It's Okay To Be Smart It's Amazing
It's Okay To Be Smart using rear end Lol hahaha
Best joke ever
It's Okay To Be Smart yeah! Now please explain the wonders of slug slime....? Please??
Marcello Passaro yeah lol
That spider scientist seems like such a fun person to hang out with.
She was! I loved hanging out with Dr. Hayashi
I can't figure out why I like her so much. I ship the hell out of them
Dave Plank anddd we’re done here folks
I would love to have a conversation with her about spiders!
I'd bounce on my boys silk to her voice until I was wrapped up and devoured
You can tell she really loves her job
she wants spider senses
I could swear that's the woman from the museum from the first Toby McGuire spider Man series
Hayashi tingle
shes living, that job is lucky to have her
I read this before I watched and I thought you meant the spider loved pooping webs

@@AxolinaAxolotl I'm fairly certain that spider was too small lol. Don't remember though.
I have like over 50 spiders in my room the cobwebs are getting out of hand
spiders also eat mosquitoes. Spiders are awsome
Brooo same
Dr. Hayashi CLEARLY loves her work... It's so nice to see people happy in what they do. PS - There was a baby(?) spider crawling on my bed last night, so I gingerly took it and put it on the carpet next to me, only to find it on my bed again after picking up some papers (also on the floor next to me) a few minutes later. It clearly wanted to snuggle in for the evening with me, but I took it outside the second time.
That's sad! It just wanted to be your friend
søra Áo Subliміпаls yeah, but if it’s venomous, then the threat of it biting me will overpower my sense of friendship with a creature that probably can’t even process platonic relationships in the first place
@@nin2494 are you a spider? How would you know they don't understand friendship? And what if it wasn't venomous, would ur feelings for it change?
søra Áo Subliміпаls yea
søra Áo Subliміпаls besides, I don’t know if a spider understands the concept of friendship, I don’t even know if I’m the only entity with agency, which is why I said *probably.* working with what I have, I have come to the conclusion that a spider’s insufficient nervous system, by what we think we know, as of now that is, since science is always changing, won’t or rather can’t allow it to grasp friendship. Also working on the basis that because I’m not in the other party’s shoes I can’t make educated guesses limits the advancement of both morality and science

Dr. Cheryl is adorable! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
L Galicki Band Would you be saying that if the scientist was A MAN?!
You SEXIST PIG! It is people like you that are destroying the world for my daughter. I hope you get a good laugh out of this, you cold horrible monster.
Why not saying that a male scientist is adorable if someone considering one to be such? I bet lots of people said that Neil deGrasse Tyson is adorable. I'm also considereing her adorable and at the same time a way better scientist than 99,99% man or any scientists are (I've checked her stats), it means no disrespect. I would also be happy to work under her supervising if I would work in related topic (actually most scientist should dream about it). And as a male scientist I would have no problem if someone would write or said "Dr. Igor is adorable", it would be funny and that's all.
TheJordanChronicles I think you should probably calm down.
Finding someone "adorable" doesn't mean that you don't recognise their brilliant mind. The vast majority of people want someone to find them adorable, irrespective of their brilliance, in fact many exceptional people will cite having (or being in) a loving, stable relationship as a factor in being able to continue with their work.
You've got issues if you can't accept that, and going all 'caps lock', and calling someone a sèxist pig for something as innocuous as saying that they find a female scientist "adorable" shows up some anger management issues in particular.
Also, brilliance itself can be "adorable" - I'm sure I'm not alone in finding intelligence itself attractive. I've always found smart women far more attractive than women who play the ditzy, dumb routine, especially if they're smarter than me, (admittedly not too difficult).
I kinda like 'Physics Girl', who is smarter than me, and adorable.
Ian Macfarlane *whispers* he was just kidding.
Keith Reece How am I supposed to know that he was kidding?
There's no clue that makes it clear & he is expressing a commonly held view, so there's no way that I could have picked up on that.
Humans can't yet make a material as strong as spider silk, like we can't yet make a computer as powerful as a human brain. Nature is way ahead but we are doing well to even try to compete :)
Yes but we are still the kid who fell over his/her own feet two meters beyond the starting line but yeah sure humans deserve a participation price.
There are super computors wayy faster than the human brain in terms of math and seed ect. Hoever the only thing we havent mastered is giving machines individual thought or a true AI
We actually can make material stronger lol. It's still equally amazing, just wanted to point that out.
Quantum computers. Pretty sure on was just created
Give humanity 20millions year to engineer a rope like that, i think we will do it way better in less that 10k year take that nature you suck...
Wait, nature made humans. Ok you won.

When I started to hear that ticking sound.... I thought there was a huge spider near me. xD
Ikr it scared the S**t out of me lol

Usually youtubers multiply numbers by thousands and you choose 20mil over 100mil in the title ? I AM IMPRESSED !
Alex Israelyan looooool so true
Yeah, I was searching the comments for this. I'm guessing he was like *Everyone's going to think this is click-bait! I'll go with the low key 20,000,000 instead* :D
He must’ve wanted to show the spider in the fossil and use the correct age
Rozzane Juresr how can the age of amber and spider differ
I mean since the spider in the 20mil fossil is clearer, he must've wanted to use it in the thumbnail and it's correct age in the title
Spiders are amazing creatures. There is so much to learn from nature.
Love this "Spider Woman." She is a great example of a woman of science! Plus she has a great imagination and sense of humor.
Thank you for this delightful program!

I actually have a spider where I’m sitting right now......his name is Phil.....he lives on my ceiling.....but he hates people......
Brooke Mason I have a spider on my ceiling too! We haven’t given it (unknown gender) a name yet though. For now we call it “Little Dude”
I have a spider friend too! His name is Willie and we have a friend fly and its name is Jason we are waiting untill it is gonna be big enough to eat it... Hope he dont know that we want to eat it...
When I was little we had a spider named Phil on our ceiling too! Neat!😁
Does everybody name their ceiling spiders Phil? Phil was a huntsman who wandered around on our wall. He would go away in the summer but always come back in the spring and winter.

Omg, my dirty mind... XD
Did it take spiders millions of years to make silk that strong or was the spider silk already that strong millions of years ago?
I know some traits evolved pretty rapidly in some organisms, so I wonder if spider silk could potentially be one of those traits.
Interesting question, I'd like to know myself
Roy Maybe it was just some defense mechanism at first. Or just sticky glue to catch insects... And the advantage to make "ropes" and later webs just evolved from that.
Just look at other insects, that shoot stuff out their ass. I'm sure there's a common ancestor.
Kevin Becker except it would have to be a case of convergent evolution since spiders aren't insects.
I mean we have these guys with the webs encased in amber. Do we not have any kind of spectrometry equipment that could determine the molecular build of these materials without smashing it?
Roy Well with common ancestor I ment one waaaaay before insects and achnarids were a thing :P
Kevin Becker well if you want to go that far back, looking at some proto-arthropod, it's hard to say if any of them could even produce silk. Given what we currently have, I'd wager by the time silk entered the picture, spiders and other insects were already separated into very distant branches of the animal kingdom
*We can make a web wall and make the Airachnids pay for it*
It is actually fascinating touching a piece of Earth from 100 million years ago,and 20 million years ago,and to see a spider that once was walking even before Dinosaurs were here, that spider is older than all humans combined ever, and he somewhat still looks alive dude.
I hate to break it to you but 100mya is not before the dinosaurs...

Ok, so I have an arachnophobia and the first few sentences of this video freaked me out... but I don't know why I am even watching this😂
I love spiders. Dr. Hayashi's awesome because of how excited she is. Spider silk is so smooth to our touch because they're beta pleated sheets in contrast to our alpha helix composed nails and hydrophobic skin, right? I wonder if spiders in tropical climates produce humidity resistant silk. Were you measuring elasticity? I think I read about mechanical stretchers used in physics experiments.
"It's posing like a spider" 4:48
Well yeah, should it be posing like a whale?🐋
Jk guys, she seems lovely. Not trynna pick on her
Why can't spider silk be commercially manufactured then? If it's such a strong fibre it could be used for reinforcing ropes, bullet proof vests etc.
GhenGhost Commenting because I want to know too.
GhenGhost I want to know as well
It's difficult to make it commercially viable. Spiders don't typically create a ton of silk at a time, and they need to eat in order to make more if you're harvesting it constantly. Add in the cost of harvesting the webs and turning them into an usable product and you probably won't be in business for very long. One way to solve these problems that they bring it up in the video but don't go into details with is the transfer of silk genes into other organisms. They bring up silkworms, which have been farmed in Asia for thousands of years as a potential method of production and whose silk production behavior is fairly similar to that of spiders (albeit with fewer silk types). Another alternative is goats, with the proteins used for silk being produced alongside the milk. This method has been worked on for close to a decade now, but there are still issues with producing large quantities of silk protein, as well as with refining them into usable material. Interestingly enough, the same lab that made the spider goats also tried to put the silk genes into alfalfa plants (more humane and less costly than raising goats) but I haven't read anything about it in a few years so I'm not sure how well it worked.
TL;DR shit's expensive, but people are trying
GhenGhost You would need way too many spiders to produce anything substantial for use that it wont make sense for the cost vs cost of just developing alternatives, also PETA would be all over them
-Dash™ tru and its pretty complicated to properly engineer anything similar to spider silk. but none the less they are just awesome creaturs!

Luis Fernando I don't have a problem with insects but as soon as I see eight legs I kill faster than you can say "spider".
Merkur But becouse I fear them, I hate them.
Spiders don't want to hurt you. Their venom is far to precious to waste on you and will only do so to defend them selves.

Now that I found out how much effort spiders go through to make a web, I feel bad for destroying them.
