    Living things have engineered some pretty awesome materials, but I'm not sure anything measures up to spider silk. It's as strong, as stretchy, and as resilient than even humans' most advanced creations like Kevlar and steel. So how do these awesome arachnids weave such an incredible substance using nothing but their rear ends? And… what IS this stuff? I went to meet Dr. Cheryl Hayashi, one of the world's experts in spider silk, to find out.

    I really enjoyed traveling to Dr. Hayashi's lab to feature some of her spider science. Should I do this kind of thing more? Leave a comment and let me know!

    Dr. Hayashi CLEARLY loves her work... It's so nice to see people happy in what they do. PS - There was a baby(?) spider crawling on my bed last night, so I gingerly took it and put it on the carpet next to me, only to find it on my bed again after picking up some papers (also on the floor next to me) a few minutes later. It clearly wanted to snuggle in for the evening with me, but I took it outside the second time.

      søra Áo Subliміпаls besides, I don’t know if a spider understands the concept of friendship, I don’t even know if I’m the only entity with agency, which is why I said *probably.* working with what I have, I have come to the conclusion that a spider’s insufficient nervous system, by what we think we know, as of now that is, since science is always changing, won’t or rather can’t allow it to grasp friendship. Also working on the basis that because I’m not in the other party’s shoes I can’t make educated guesses limits the advancement of both morality and science

      Why not saying that a male scientist is adorable if someone considering one to be such? I bet lots of people said that Neil deGrasse Tyson is adorable. I'm also considereing her adorable and at the same time a way better scientist than 99,99% man or any scientists are (I've checked her stats), it means no disrespect. I would also be happy to work under her supervising if I would work in related topic (actually most scientist should dream about it). And as a male scientist I would have no problem if someone would write or said "Dr. Igor is adorable", it would be funny and that's all.

    • @ianmacfarlane1241
      @ianmacfarlane1241 6 років тому +9

      TheJordanChronicles I think you should probably calm down.
      Finding someone "adorable" doesn't mean that you don't recognise their brilliant mind. The vast majority of people want someone to find them adorable, irrespective of their brilliance, in fact many exceptional people will cite having (or being in) a loving, stable relationship as a factor in being able to continue with their work.
      You've got issues if you can't accept that, and going all 'caps lock', and calling someone a sèxist pig for something as innocuous as saying that they find a female scientist "adorable" shows up some anger management issues in particular.
      Also, brilliance itself can be "adorable" - I'm sure I'm not alone in finding intelligence itself attractive. I've always found smart women far more attractive than women who play the ditzy, dumb routine, especially if they're smarter than me, (admittedly not too difficult).
      I kinda like 'Physics Girl', who is smarter than me, and adorable.

    • @Byter09
      @Byter09 6 років тому +1

      Roy Maybe it was just some defense mechanism at first. Or just sticky glue to catch insects... And the advantage to make "ropes" and later webs just evolved from that.
      Just look at other insects, that shoot stuff out their ass. I'm sure there's a common ancestor.

    • @roy4173
      @roy4173 6 років тому

      Kevin Becker except it would have to be a case of convergent evolution since spiders aren't insects.
      I mean we have these guys with the webs encased in amber. Do we not have any kind of spectrometry equipment that could determine the molecular build of these materials without smashing it?

    • @Byter09

    • @roy4173
      @roy4173 6 років тому

      Kevin Becker well if you want to go that far back, looking at some proto-arthropod, it's hard to say if any of them could even produce silk. Given what we currently have, I'd wager by the time silk entered the picture, spiders and other insects were already separated into very distant branches of the animal kingdom

    I love spiders. Dr. Hayashi's awesome because of how excited she is. Spider silk is so smooth to our touch because they're beta pleated sheets in contrast to our alpha helix composed nails and hydrophobic skin, right? I wonder if spiders in tropical climates produce humidity resistant silk. Were you measuring elasticity? I think I read about mechanical stretchers used in physics experiments.

      It's difficult to make it commercially viable. Spiders don't typically create a ton of silk at a time, and they need to eat in order to make more if you're harvesting it constantly. Add in the cost of harvesting the webs and turning them into an usable product and you probably won't be in business for very long. One way to solve these problems that they bring it up in the video but don't go into details with is the transfer of silk genes into other organisms. They bring up silkworms, which have been farmed in Asia for thousands of years as a potential method of production and whose silk production behavior is fairly similar to that of spiders (albeit with fewer silk types). Another alternative is goats, with the proteins used for silk being produced alongside the milk. This method has been worked on for close to a decade now, but there are still issues with producing large quantities of silk protein, as well as with refining them into usable material. Interestingly enough, the same lab that made the spider goats also tried to put the silk genes into alfalfa plants (more humane and less costly than raising goats) but I haven't read anything about it in a few years so I'm not sure how well it worked.
      TL;DR shit's expensive, but people are trying

    • @-dash.
      @-dash. 6 років тому +13

      GhenGhost You would need way too many spiders to produce anything substantial for use that it wont make sense for the cost vs cost of just developing alternatives, also PETA would be all over them
