A few months ago they redesigned the drop down panel to use the same breathable material that they use in their mattresses. You can confirm whether yours has this by trying to breathe through the material. If it’s not breathable I would reach out to customer service to see if they can exchange it for the new version.
Hey so I can’t answer from her perspective but I do know in all current models of the Newton Baby Bassinet that side is still breathable even without the mesh!

What did you end up deciding about the side that is not mesh? That is my concern too
