    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 4 роки тому +36

      Rialtoir I don’t know where you get that. Don’t you have a friend like him? I have quite a few. We tease each other, but know it’s in good fun. It’s the sarcasm and wry humor that lets us have a good time. The characters in this show are the same. They know it’s smarter not to get caught in his verbal traps, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like him. What they don’t like is his stubbornness to follow his ethics at the cost of his own well-being. They act like normal friends.

    • @Carlos-ne3zf
      @Carlos-ne3zf 4 роки тому +13

      @@ADTillion well with Futaba at least yeah I totally see your point and thinking about it. It makes their friendship feel closer to a real relationship than most other series but the point stands with Nodoka and Kamisato, him being purpousfully unlikeable to the later which yeah I think she kinda deserves it but I can see through that how some people wouldnt like the character. Also he himself admits a lot of times that he isnt the nicest person to be around and that only Kunimi, Futaba and Mai like him xD
      And Koga I nearly forgot about Koga

    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 4 роки тому +10

      Rialtoir Nodoka is more of a rival. She trusts him, but they have clashing personalities. It’s not a case of outright dislike. More like, they are friends by association, unlike the rest. It makes sense though, considering the many differences in their lives. It was Mai that was more involved in fixing the adolescent syndrome in her case, than with the other girls. Makes sense. Sakuta would prefer if siblings reconciled and wouldn’t mind being “the boyfriend” that annoys a future sister-in-law. Nodoka would always defend Mai before defending Sakuta. The film elaborates on this, and the exact dynamic the three have in the quasi-family situation.
      Kamisato probably doesn’t like people who disregard atmosphere in general. But she has added reason to get in his face rather than avoid him like the rest of the school, because her BF is his BFF. It’s kinda cliche, but not unrealistic. You don’t want your significant other to be criticised for associating with a guy like Sakuta. But again, she’s not a friend. The other characters hang out with him cause they are friends. My personality isn’t as hardy as Sakuta’s, but my place in school social order was similar, so I get where he comes from and how one gets friends in that situation.

      I see how you could very easily make a very much romance based VN about it that has romance with all the girls in different routes in it. But in the anime, i didn't think he had any romantic interest in any of the other girls

    • @MiyaoMeow588

      The only other girl that's into him is Tomoe. *Maybe* Kaede, but A. she's obviously not treated as a real love interest nor does Sakuta take her comments seriously and B. due to her...predicament, some confused feelings regarding her brother would be understandable. And Sakuta is only interested in Mai.
      But really, I don't think you can call this a harem.

    • @calar8
      @calar8 4 роки тому +59

      I agree 100%, and its one of the elements that I liked most about the show. Sakuta and Mai's relationship felt surprisingly mature for anime of this genre, and I never felt Sakuta had ulterior motives for helping other female members of the cast because he knew he was in love with Mai. It was a very refreshing change of pace from what I was bracing myself for.

    • @Ryukurai
      @Ryukurai 4 роки тому +8

      Just my personal opinion - there's two entirely different things... There's harem anime and anime with harems that aren't actually harem anime. The first is typically ecchi trash, the latter is usually absolutely amazing because it takes intelligent and well thought out characters/writing to toe the lie between having this large harem, but not allowing it to devolve in ecchi trash. Bunny Girl Senpai, Monogatari, TWGOK, and even to a lesser extent Interview with Monster Girls are all anime that (imo) fall under this category (and are all some of my personal favorites because of it).

      As someone who's not really into harem, I found The World God Only Knows highly entertaining. The way that show works with those tropes is so nice. Too bad it didn't get finished. Despite its shortcomings, I liked the last arc of the manga and even how they decided to finish the story.

    Slight critique Arkada:
    You describe Sakuta as socially awkward, so the atmosphere doesn't affect him that's not accurate.
    He himself describes himself as able to read the atmosphere, but chooses willingly to ignore it (which is probably how he is able to solve the girls problems as if he was just unable to read the air then he probably wouldn't be able to figure it out)

    • @GlassReflection
      @GlassReflection  4 роки тому +98

      I know he says that, but I don't take him at his word. If it was something he willingly choose to ignore, then he wouldn't have ended up following the atmosphere at the end of ep3, when he very much DID NOT want to do.
      I may not have described it best, and maybe I'm wrong, but the show left some ambiguity there.

    • @damiannguyen9195
      @damiannguyen9195 4 роки тому +41

      Glass Reflection I think you kind of missed the explanation at the start of episode 3, Arkada. Mai’s problem with everyone forgetting about her existence is done when everyone fall asleep and subconsciously looses their perception. That’s why Sakuta tried desperately to stay awake for several days straight to keep his perception on Mai, and only “go with the atmosphere” subconsciously when he was pilled to sleep by Mai. He did not chose to follow the atmosphere at that moment, but rather he was unwillingly forced into it. So the point of Sakuta actively act not according to the atmosphere still stand

    • @MiyaoMeow588
      @MiyaoMeow588 4 роки тому +21

      @@GlassReflection The way I see it, Sakuta is someone who had given up on trying to push against the flow. He had figured it was impossible to change it so he made no real attempt to, which is why he never bothered to correct the misunderstanding about his scars. In a sense, he was taking the easy way out by doing nothing. But when Mai's existence eventually hinges on that very same atmosphere, he realizes that he shouldn't let his cynical attitude stop him from at least trying to fight against an atmosphere that is clearly wrong. Until then, he had only fought in small, insignificant ways, like making out of place comments and turning the mood awkward. His public embarrassment in episode 3 was more large scale than he's used to, so being slightly hesitant is understandable, although it it meant saving Mai he ultimately didn't care.

    • @matthewdupont1699
      @matthewdupont1699 4 роки тому +16

      @@GlassReflection I appreciate this discussion, but I still agree with SleightCreative on this one.
      I think your point about Episode 3 isn't evidence against him seeing and rejecting the negative elements of the atmosphere, but a testament to the power of the puberty symdrome. He can't stop Koga's time rewinds, but he is the one who notices time is repeating. Similarly, even him first meeting Mai hinges on the fact that he was the only one who was able to see her. Maybe he isn't able to fully stop these supernatural consequences, but by actively critically examining his atmosphere for cases where it could be causing harm, he's at least resilient to the effects through that rejection. Sort of a resistance, rather than immunity.
      I think his character makes more sense and is stronger/more sympathetic if you view him as rejecting the atmosphere rather than just unaware. Maybe I just want him to be a good character so I'm projecting, but part of me thinks that the story is stronger with that interpretation, and there's enough evidence for it that it's not too much of a stretch to see things that way.
      Appreciate the feedback GR.

    You touched on it briefly, but I would've liked it if you expanded more on how this show deconstructs and shows how flawed the concept of "reading the air/atmosphere" can be, and how harmful it is in our social interactions.
    This show very much acts like a warning tale and shows that sometimes, not approaching someone and acting in parallel to the mood can leave you with lasting regrets. It's a flawed social idealogy which permeates a lot of Japan's social interactions, specifically with younger students who feel a pressing need to "fit in" with society.

    Anytime its mentioned or anytime mai comes up in a waifu war it's still remembered and beloved by basically everyone that's seen it. Hell this review got in my reccomend and videos about bunnygirl senpai were in my reccomend still after the years. Although I doubt it will stay highly relevant but I believe that when looked back upon it will definitely be remembered, just like mai, fondly by all that have watched and it will continue to be reccomend to people. I've gotten 3 or 4 of my friends who absolutely never watch anime to watch it and they loved it and the movie. Hell one of my friends who never sheds tears over shows, movies, books, games or any media texted me at 3 am telling me he loved it and was crying after binge watching every episode and then the movie

    I loved that show - I still like the atmosphere of the monogatari series more than Bunny girl senpai, it seems more generic than the monogatari series and failing to immerse you as much into it. But I still gave it a 9 out of 10. Now, you obviously seem to not like Araragi, but in fact the great thing about him (and that maybe could happen to Rascal) is that he grows, you see him change - not fast mind you, but it's not only the female characters that change in the monogatari series. Around the second season you see him change. Especially in Hanekawa's last arc.

    Like many Japanese anime, "Rascal does not...." is drawn after an actual part of Japan. The various scenes and places can be found on Google street view. Most of the action occurs within or near Enoshima, a tourist area on the ocean about 50 miles south of Tokyo. The school they attend is located on the ocean about 3/4 miles east of Enoshima. The town that that Sakuta and Mai live in is Fujisawa, about 2 or 3 miles north by northwest of Enoshima. Their apartment is about 1/2 mile northeast of the Fujisawa train station. They walk to the train station and take the "Enoshima Electric Railway" to the station by their school. Besides the beach, a popular attraction in Enoshima is the mushroom Cauliflower shaped peninsula that juts southward into the ocean at enoshima. That is where Sakuta and Koga visit the temple and hand the love contract. There is a lookout there were Koga blurts out that she loves Sakuta. Futaba gets off at a train station off of a different train line. i was unable to find her expensive house and presume that the anime deliberately keeps something as personal like that a secret. But I was able to find the train station. The zoo with the Pandas is right in Tokyo, the popular Ueno area. The aquarium is right there in Enoshima right on the beach, just to the west of the peninsula. In the last episode, Sakuta take the bullet train to Kawasawa, which is located on the north coast of Japan, probably a 5 tp 6 hour train ride by the bullet train.

    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 4 роки тому +5

      Master Pirate The manga is conclusive. The anime basically skipped a portion of the middle to get to the Goddess arc, and then stopped before the final arc. I usually recommend reading the manga to completion and then watching the anime for the highlights especially the beautiful animation and soundtracks. The anime is somewhat censored too, at least in the Goddess arc. The manga is more violent and bit more sexual. Has a few more details too, since the chapters are paced in a certain way.
      Nonetheless, the overarching plot is only introduced in the Goddess arc(the third season). And that arc has a banger of a conclusion. To some people, it’s good enough, but if you want proper closure and not heartache from crying at the emotional climax, you’d need the manga.
      I mean, it’s still one of the best romcom manga.

      I'm getting a bit confused here: The anime and manga have different endings?

    • @ADTillion
      @ADTillion 4 роки тому +1

      Master Pirate The anime stopped before the final arc. Basically, it’s like Bleach. Bleach continued beyond the point that the anime ended. Similar deal with Hunter X Hunter. It’s what happens to majority of anime. The arc they end on, is usually solid enough to not warrant another season, even though canonically, it continues.
      As a rule, romcom manga never get full anime adaptations. It’s actually a miracle TWGOK got as much as it did.
      And oh, I just remembered. They technically did 3 and a half seasons. The Tenri OVA was basically the prequel to the Third season. Since they didn’t do a proper season to cover the events between the seasons 2 & 3, they had to bridge it somehow. Tenri OVA introduces the plot that is explored in the Goddess Arc. You kinda have to watch that OVA before starting the last season.
      But it’s still better to just read the manga.

    This was easily one of the greatest anime of 2018 - which was saying something given how super stacked that year was throughout the entire year. I remember avoiding it for the first few episodes because I thought to myself "Ugh, this is probably going to be ecchi trash or something with a title like that." I know I wasn't alone in this because the MyAnimeList score on Episode one was like 6.8, and it quickly shot up to 8.0+ after many people (myself included) realized - "Oh wait, this anime is actually so friggin good."
    You know an anime is S tier when the first arc consist of only the first 3 episodes, and despite only being 3 episodes has a story so good and so beautiful it could have ended right then and there and still been fantastic.

    Personally, I like to treat/consider characters as I would my friends. Some shows with terrible characterisation make that incredibly hard or nigh impossible, but I still try.
    The reason why shows like this, imo, don’t remind you of other things while watching, is because the characters feel close to you. Think about it. No matter how much we laude individuality and uniqueness, we tend to group our friends and family under certain definitions and generally have to hear identical backgrounds, complaints, aspirations, from a multitude of people. But, what makes us forget the similarity of one person’s story to another, is the degree to which we bond with the person. Once you bond, all of a sudden, a problem you’ve seen as a cliche before, becomes something at the forefront of your mind as you try to solve it and help your friend, and you may try to employ a tactic you used with a similar friend, but you want to acknowledge the unique bond you have, so you are try to come up with a different solution.

  • @dvillines26
    @dvillines26 3 роки тому +1

    I guess I understand the comparison to other anime protagonists, but to me Sakuta is so unique because he's not an edgelord, a cynic, or excessively creepy. He's honest, in a society that holds huge value in saving face and conformity, which makes him a social misfit. and there's a flashback to something Shoko tells him in one of the last episodes that helps explain why he goes out of his way to help the characters in this series - he might come across as a dick, but he's deeply kind where it counts, in no small part due to his having to take care of Kaede.
    I've always been interested in the tension between the words "nice" and "kind", and I've always much preferred the latter. it's very easy to be nice, but not kind, and be perceived as a good person, and from what I've seen from anime and a few films, that seems to be an endemic problem in Japanese culture (as it is also especially in the American Midwest). Someone who doesn't "read the room", who does not conform to niceties, who is inconvenient to society, they get treated as if they're bad, inconsiderate, the villain at times even. And some people who aren't nice are all that, BUT there are people that are not nice, but are deeply kind, people who might have a prickly exterior or a disinterest in social niceties, but would lay everything on the line for someone they barely know. the kind of person who in a normal social situation would be endlessly frustrating, but who you would call first in a crisis. and that's Sakuta.
    also Sakuta, once he realizes his feelings for Mai, never really takes much of an interest in any other girl beyond an inappropriate comment (and that time when he's talking to Nodoka, she looks like Mai, sooooo). so it's not really a harem at all. by the end of the second arc they're an item and they stay that way. and he starts the series platonic friends with one girl and then befriends another! name me another protagonist like this that can just have healthy friendships with girls his age! and god, the way he helps Futaba resolve her problem is so beautiful, because he doesn't treat her like a problem to solve, but as a friend in crisis. and he helps her see that the guy she's pining over may never see her the way she wishes he did, but he does love her as a friend, and would bike over in the middle of the night if he heard she was in trouble.

    "That he can be a bit of a dick" is very untrue. Just because you are not going with the atmosphere doesn't mean you are a 'bit of a dick'. Bullying is commonplace in japan because of "atmosphere". People turn a blind eye to it and rather not get involved. Some student can get isolated / ignored. Sometimes people whispering unfounded rumors and bad mouthing others, but you don't call it out because "social norms".
    It's a far more positive thing than you are putting it. People are not "going along" with "kuuki" because it's right, but rather it's just easier.

In defense to TWGOK, it wasn't boredom to the show that lead its fate to be forgotten but rather the studio who animated the show. If I can remember it correctly, the studio got bankrupt for whatever reason and the rights to animate TWGOK remains to them.
    TWGOK manga was full of twist and revelations that you'll fully dive into. The ending was still the most logical and best ending we could ever get from the story.

    I think you may have misjudged or mischaracterized Sakuta in this review. Sakuta chooses not to read the room. He is very aware of his actions, but acts as if he isn’t, hence his crude and sometimes rude remarks. His actions are considered, but he does not care about its repercussions. He does this because of what happened to Kaede. He shows emotion. He cries and gets angry when most people would be embarrassed to show emotion, especially for a male character. (Standing up for Koga, crying for Kaede, screaming his love in public for Mai.) Sakuta is a much deeper character than you might think; the moments he has with Shoko (whether in his memories or in the present) really show where he comes from. They are less about Shoko and actually, *his* adolescent syndrome arc. His arc climaxes in the movie, which follows Kaede’s arc.

    The other thing in Bunny Girl's favour is that is kept the arcs short. Just like Arkada says "watch the first 3 and decide is you want more", it reminds me of currently airing Oresuki, which you could say the same about, even though it's a completely different genre. Basically no individual arc overstays it's welcome, and when the characters and their banter is as entertaining as it is in Bunny Girl, it keeps it fresh and watchable.

    Everyone talks about how the show is all about the "atmosphere", but I didn't see anything like that in in. Maybe I failed to read the atmosphere of the show?
    Like, you say that it's not the girl who turned invisible, but the society made it a taboo to interact with her? But that certainly didn't feel that way in the show. And that scene where her mom comes to the beach... my memory might serve me wrong, but didn't she directly ask like "where the hell is my daughter", like she wasn't just avoiding interacting with her, she quite wanted to interact with her, but just didn't see her?
    Or even if in that case my memory is indeed mistaken, how can that "atmosphere" explain the other cases, like with the time loop or a doppelganger? What, it became a new social norm among the people to expect time to loop and expect people to spawn doppelgangers? That makes no sense.
    The show does drop the word "atmosphere" like a couple of times, but also doesn't bother to explain how it's supposed to tie up with what's happening.
    And you say "who even talks about world god only knows anymore", well, can't say for everyone, but I've just as successfully forgotten about this show as well.

    The big difference in the on going romance between Mai and the main character. Maybe you considered that a spoiler, but to me that is the main selling point. that and not putting shiny red spots on her boobs.

    It was the first story of this kind for me. It was a most enjoyable watch I had in a long time. A little dissapointing pacing of the movie made me look for other stories like it and I opened a new world of anime I never knew existed.
    But Bunny Girl Senpai is forever the first in my heart

    Yea this is a series that definitely seems more interesting than what it seems in the surface. It seems like more of just a fanservice show at first, but I've been hearing a lot of good things about it and how so many were surprised with how much they enjoyed it. You giving it even more perspective will make me keep this one on my radar more. I might give it a shot eventually; along with the many other series I hope to one day get to. LOL.

    This anime is one of the few which had a really good season ending.

    It took great concious effort for me to finish even the first arc, but I am pretty sure had I watched BGS 5 years ago I probably would have been a huge fan.

    Bunny Girl Senpai remains... to this day my favorite anime of all time, as a man with a respectable 250 anime's watched on my belt it still remains my favorite (also the first show to make me cry)

    I miss The World God Only Knows. Since the last seasons didn't come out, I caved in and read the manga, that being the first manga I ever bothered to finish. Got me crying. Fucking hell the anime was so good, too...

    I loved this show, and waiting for new eps was freaking hard. It moved me to tears more than once. Also the opening song is awesome.

    I introduced this anime to a friend by calling it "a simpler Monogatari"

    Everyone says Bakemonogatari, but just a few have watched it all. If you watched it all then you may understand what's the series about.
    And it is different from bunny girl senpai from what i ve seen.

      Andrea R. Vincenti, Bunnygirl is more alike Bakemonogatari than the whole series,

    • @handreieiacasa
      @handreieiacasa 4 роки тому

      @@chidangvan3240 bunny girl is more on the urban fantasy side and uses some "scientific" elements to complete the plot, bakemonogatari and all the monogatari series is much more folkloristic and "naturalistic"

      Andrea R. Vincenti those are just vehicles, we are talking about the theme and the plot structure, Bake and Bunny Girl is very alike but if you turn to other parts of Monogatari, you don’t have much things alike compared to Bunny Girl.

    I love both this show and other shows like the world and Haruhi that are noted for their flaws which while I.can love a show always upset me the direction, outcome once done and how each are remembered. Just needed someone to tell me that so thanks Arkada, Christ!
