I've always wanted that in my small town, but even the big name stores like best buy never really have anything that sticks out to me. Really if I did have a game store in my town I'd probably go more to make friends with the owners and other customers rather than seeking out something for the collection.
The local gamestop in my area was my childhood, the manager there was really chill, and my mom actually got to know him a bit, and my mother would always mention him fondly to the employees, sadly the manager who was really nice really quit gamestop to for a job he has more passion for, pet smart, he loves animals, but the new manager is also pretty nice and was an empolyee there for years.
I still remember the moment when I was 11 or 12 years old and I went into Gamestop to buy a game. The employee told me that Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 were coming out soon and I had no idea. I remember being completely mind-blown by the fact that there was a Pokémon game with a real sequel
One time my mom pre-ordered Modern Warfare 3, which had a program where you could recieve pre-order bonuses depending on when you bought it. An earlier order resulted in higher value bonuses. We went to get it on release day and they didn't have ANY of those promised items there. My mom was not happy. She tried to argue with the poor guy behind the counter before she gave up and we walked away with just the game itself and no pre-order bonuses, probably $80 or more down the drain for her troubles.
Well I mean that sucks, but is also fine. Pre-orders don't cost more than buying a game regulary. So it just turned out to be a regular purchase. Not great, not terrible. Still tho, your feelings must've hurt
I had a weird GameStop experience once When I bought my PS4 I also bought GTA V and Detroit become human (both M games and I was 16) and I left the store with all of those A few months later I went to a different game stop in the area and tried buying a few more M games and the guy asks for my ID, I made the mistake of saying “I didn’t know that (which I didn’t) the game stop at this other location gave me these M games” and the guy was like “I can shut down that store for that-“ cut to a month later and that store is no longer there. I destroyed a game stop store because I can’t buy a fucking M rated game at 16.
I bought call of duty when I was 13 and the guy just asked my mom if it was ok that that it was m rated and she said yes. And now I can say I have broken the law.
Former Games On A Shelf employee here (2007-2019 on and off) and boy was it soul crushing. I stuck around because it was generally easy work, flexible, was something I was interested in, and whenever I moved to a new area, I had the experience necessary to get right in. The store I worked at was actually the home base for the guy that’s actually the VP of stores now. Anyway, all the gripes and all the counter points to the gripes are all spot on. My store try to minimize the bullshit by encouraging donations of games that weren’t pulling that much in credit, we’d NEVER sticker box art, instead we’d tear the sticker off with the back still on, and close it in the plastic covering. That way, whenever you bought it, you just opened the game up, lifted the plastic, boom, no stickers. We also FIERCELY stuck to our guns with the 48 hour reserve window on new games. If you pre-ordered a game at our store, we had your copy for 48 hours regardless of corporate telling us to sell through our stock.
Thankfully, the times I went to my local GameStop, there were pretty chill people who didn't really bother me a lot about memberships and stuff. They closed down last year. OHHH
I remember having a pretty good conversation about the DS Pokemon games with a GameStop employee one time. He wasn't trying to sell me anything, we just had a good chat. Wish I could have more experiences like that at GameStop.
Man, I'm on a rewatching binge of Scott the Woz videos and this is my 5th time watching this one and i still enjoy it just as much as the first time. I feel like this rewatching binge may trigger me going on a shopping spree for games that I will not play for no other reason than "I'll get around to it eventually"
Went to this really cool 2-storey game store once. They had regular modern game stuff on the ground floor, like Minecraft plushies, Switch consoles, and 3 different versions of Exploding Kittens. But the fun part was the basement. They sell N64 games. They sell C64s and Ataris. They have Tetris and Pac-Man arcade machines (not for sale afaik). Their (3)DS game collection was bigger than my local game shop's was at its peak. I went to heaven and it's the basement of a random game shop in the Netherlands.
man i wish i live in the netherlands, n64 games are either really hard to find, expensive, or dont work. i am still pissed i never got pokemon stadium 2
As a secondhand game store worker, i rarely see sealed games - but when we occasionally get new releases sent to us to sell, unsealing them and inhaling that plasticy scent is a momentous occasion 😆
I used to work at Gamestop, was there for about a year and left about two months ago. I'm glad you aren't one of the people who like to crucify the employees about pushing things when it isn't really their choice. I'm not going to say Gamestop is this evil corporation like a lot of ex-employees do, but it's just not the store I want to be in that I grew up loving. You really hit the nail on the head with this video, there's huge pressure on sales numbers and preorder goals to the point that Gamestop has become a laughing stock for being so aggressive to people who really just want to buy a game and get out, and there aren't even incentives to get good sales numbers, it's just expected that they're good or you're fired. One day while our District Manager was in our store for a visit, he wrote me up for not approaching customers on the sales floor with the tablet to ask for their phone number to look up their rewards account. After about a year of being in a management position there, I was getting paid 8.50 an hour, often being forced to work over 40 hours a week, and the pressure to have good numbers was always prevalent. I ended up putting in my two weeks because it just wasn't worth the stress anymore. Tl;dr - Go easy on GS employees, they're likely exhausted and definitely underpaid. Also, you'd be surprised at the number of collectibles they sell. It is by far their highest profit margin.
@@ltbqfr. I missed out on a job at Macy's cuz they tell you to upsell and shit and I just can't be a salesman ig cuz I don't like lying to ppl to get them to buy shit.
The worst part of glass cases on game shelves is having to get an employee for sure. Especially the walk over to the case where neither of you say anything until you arrive and say "yeah, that one"
I understand it if the games are rare or expensive, but keeping all the games behind glass cases is just unnecessary and discouraging to me as a consumer
Trust me, as someone who worked at a certain toy story that died recently, it's just as awkward for the employee. And my store (possibly others do this too) make it so turning the key and opening the case is actually quite difficult, you have to apply pressure on the glass case as you turn a key a specific way, and you actually have three keys that look pretty similar and only one works for game cases so I'm usually struggling for a minute and two as I feel like I might be silently judged by this customer likely thinking, "geez, you have trouble with the simple task of using a key?"
I started working at Gamestop back in August of last year and just got back to rewatching this episode, but holy shit he hits the nail on the head. Gamestop has it where your store's performance and employee performance is reliant on preorders, pro memberships, and warranties on hardware or games. It's literally shoved down the employees' throats so they can puke it back down yours. I hate it with a passion. I firmly believe the stuff can be beneficial, but c'mon, it's not like everyone wants the prostate exam of retail.

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who would obsess over the game u just got on the way home from the store. The 40 minute trip home let me study every inch of the cover because it was all I could do during the wait time between buying the game and slapping it in whatever console and playing
I’m from Australia and when I was on a holiday to America, I had some money to spend on a switch game. We went to the counter and the lady said “are you a powerup rewards member?” And my Dad said “No, we’re from Australia.” There was a five second pause before she said “for when you come back?”

I actually had a pretty memorable experience at game stop once. Me and my friend went there to browse and we saw a couple Nintendo puppets (link, Mario, peach, toad and donkey Kong). We started to play with them for some reason until one of the employees walked over and said “hey you can’t play with those!” And just when I though we were gonna get in trouble he said “without me” and pulled out a toad puppet. So me and my friend played with the puppets with the employee for a bit while also laughing out asses off.

Hey, i really appreciate that message about supporting mom n' pop game shops. I grew up with a dad that owned a game store, but gamestop moved in and despite having a smaller selection, a worse location, and rude employees, they eventually just caused us to shut down. This was mostly in part because the manager at the gamestop kept telling people we were shutting down, and offered them memberships. I remember going to school each day and kids would ask me why we shut our store down, when we didn't. Well, up until we had no choice due to the economic recession of 2008 on top of the local scumbag gamestop manager. Sometimes i feel like people to open their eyes and stop feeding into corporations, and focus on what would help the community owned shops. In most cases, doing that would also be very beneficial to yourself.
8:04 Buying a new game and getting a used box was the last straw that finally made me stop going to Gamestop. I've literally never had a single good experience at Gamestop

You can dislike a game and like its music, and vice versa. For example, I despise playing Need For Speed: The Run sometimes, but the soundtrack for it bops.
The Pika Player I know, it’s just nice that, even though he’s not a fan of JRPGs and therefore Xenoblade by proxy, he at least gives the series the respect of enjoying its amazing soundtrack, especially when finding people who give a damn about the series is extremely difficult outside of the subreddit

Fun fact I work at Walmart and our store used to not have the glass cases until someone came in around 3 in the morning and stole every single game. It was like 300-400 games. They were able to do this because over nights has like 10 workers.
I actually once helped a local nearby Walmart that had issues with people constantly stealing things left and right locate blindspots for their cameras and recommended a few things regarding placement to make them more prominent, thus making would be thieves stand out more when they're trying to sneak out products from the store. That same Walmart then decided to detain me on several occasions with accusations that I tried to steal shit, a few times being detained literally the moment I walk inside the building to go grocery shopping. Thankfully I no longer live near they particular wallyworld and considering how understaffed and incompetent all the managers there are, I'm glad they're doing terribly lol

@Vasilobilaros Bilarovasilos It's the client's responsibility to research what they're buying. You can give suggestions to people who ask for it, mr. clerk
In the defense of EB Games/GameStop, I can sort of see why they're doing this. It used to be that, if you wanted to buy a game, your only option was to buy a physical copy from a traditional brick-and-mortar store. But these days, that's just not the case anymore. Online distribution systems have exploded in popularity, and physical stores just can't compete. This is an especially big problem for a company like GameStop, who by and large used to ONLY sell games, consoles and accessories. They know they can't compete on that front, so they've merged with various other merch companies like Think Geek and rebranded themselves into this "all things geek" store in an attempt to pull in new types of customers. And believe me, there are some insanely obsessive Funko collectors out there.
But then why were they so slow to move with the times. I feel bad sometimes for these shops going out of business but no one seemed to be ready for what was coming, same with blockbuster. Surely if they would have just realised quicker instead of being stubborn jerks they would still be around. I feel like since the 90s this was always going to be the future. So if I a then ten year old kid saw it how do these shortsighted fools not? Beggars belief.
Nah it’s a little deeper than that. People still enjoy Physical copies now, it’s just that thanks to Online stores, you could just order the game online and it’ll ship to your door. Thankfully most major retailers caught up to this and incorporate it to their websites but game-centric stores like GameStop needs way more than that to make it.
There was a place called Software Etc. at the local mall when I was growing up and there was this Asian guy who worked there who would always tell me which games were bad and which games were good, sometimes at the cost of making a profit. I was looking to buy an RPG called The Summoner but thanks to that glorious man I walked out with Xenosaga and Suikoden IV, the latter of which became one of my favorite games of all time. I wonder what happened to that guy. I hope he’s doing well.

Always had great experiences at my local GameStops regardless of where I lived. The employees there are actually interested in video games, are nice to talk to, and gave me honest opinions. It also allowed me to buy used games very cheap, often using the buy-2-get-1 offer, and get into the Xbox 360 late in the console’s lifecycle with great games at low prices. I also loved Game Informer. It’s because of that magazine that I read about Darksiders II, then bought Darksiders for $17 (preowned) in preparation for Darksiders II, and fell in love with the series. At this point in my life, however, I love the convenience of digital games so my relationship with GameStop is all but dead. Oh, and I also hated those ******* stickers on NEW games!
I love the smell of opening a Genesis game box. That burnt plastic smell brings me back to when I was just a kid. It hasn't left. It's like a time machine.
I remember a year or two ago there was a game store called “Revolution”. I was invited to a birthday party when I was 13, and it was really neat. It had hourly rentals, so ypu could rent out the place for around 15$ an hour. They had Wii Us, Xbox ones, PS4s, you name it. They also sold a lot of SNES and N64 titles, and controllers as well. The employees were nice too. I was wondering what happened to the store about a month ago, so I asked my dad if he could drive me there over the weekend. When we drove there, it was shut down and out of business. It sucks because the store was perfect. But now it’s gone.
I had the exact same experience as you. The place I went to was called "Dvd" Avenue and it was just as similar as Revolution except that they were more on the competitive community which was fun to watch. It closed down last year sadly, but I still keep in contact with the owner. Good times
Here in the UK we used to have a store called GameStation, during the 7th gen of consoles they often sold gen 6 games in bundles 3 for £20, which made me, a kid who only had a ps2 in 2009 and was on a budget, able to walk out with 3 games almost every month. The store shut down, probably because when we're way too generous, but it will always be one of my happiest childhood memories

8:00 This has happened to me more than once! Here in Germany, when I buy NEW games from a store (not specifically Gamestop, any store), it often happens that more expensive games are sold as "empty boxes", which means: the case packaging has been opened, the actual game has been taken out and left at some kind of information desk to avoid stealing the game. You can only pick up the actual game at the information desk by showing your purchase receipt once you have bought the game case in the store!...And you still have to pay the full price.

When I bought my PS4 I also bought GTA V and Detroit become human (both M games and I was 16) and I left the store with all of those
A few months later I went to a different game stop in the area and tried buying a few more M games and the guy asks for my ID, I made the mistake of saying “I didn’t know that (which I didn’t) the game stop at this other location gave me these M games” and the guy was like “I can shut down that store for that-“ cut to a month later and that store is no longer there.
I destroyed a game stop store because I can’t buy a fucking M rated game at 16.

So relatable 😂
I started working at Gamestop back in August of last year and just got back to rewatching this episode, but holy shit he hits the nail on the head. How to get hired at a video game store:
1) Like the Wii

When I worked at Walmart, they had a box of old original Xbox and ps2 games lying around. There was like 20 Halo 2's that were never sold or shipped away.
My local Walmart has a problem with crack heads stealing shit and something that's even dumber is that the workers can only report it to the one security guard and not the police or you could get fired, you can't say anything about it to the person stealing stuff or try to stop them or you can get fired, and you're only allowed to report it after they've left the store.

@Vasilobilaros Bilarovasilos It's the client's responsibility to research what they're buying. You can give suggestions to people who ask for it, mr. clerk
What's the place called? Just curious and want a better place to go.
Eeww digital games that shit sucks who will be dumb enough to buy that (not being sarcastic)
Eb games is better they have a separate shop for merch
@@caaltaes732 Steam says hi.
Hell yeah! Good luck out there video game store guy!

Looks like r/jontron is gonna be Scott infested for another week!
good im glad he was suggested. ive been binging scott ever since
How exactly does Scott's content remind you guys of jontron I don't see quite how besides consistent release schedule?
I'm out of the loop, why is r/jontron a Scott sub now? And since when?
mairland200 there was a revolution a while back and everyone just went with it. Mainly just people getting annoyed over Jon’s lack of uploads
Looks like it’s Grimbo time
We in the Netherlands have Game Mania, it's basically the same as GaneStop.
I once went in to buy Windwaker HD and the lady behind the counter got very excited that someone FINALLY picked up Windwaker because it was her favourite game... Memories.
Schnitzel in France we have micromania
Haha, That's great, here in Colombia we have... nothing
In Canada we have EB games
In Russia we have KooKoo games
In Mexico we have Gamers and Gameplanet
"Gamestop should focus on retro games"
And 9 months later...
They sell PC stuff now, too. At least at mine... I saw they had Elgado capturecards apparently
i have a horrible experience with GameStop. i had. $25 gift card and spent 45 minutes looking for something as an employee tried to convince me to buy things and talk to me about games i didn’t know much about.
i left with a Mario Switch case.
Oh god, that’s a terrible story
F
Well, can't say they didn't do their job... i guess..
Wish you had my GameStop. Their store is amazing and they never try shoving advertisements down your throat. On top of that they only like talking games with you and ngl it’s pretty cool.
@Bensbananaslol no
it’s red with a CIRCLE around an M
I remember the best gamestop employee, I was there to claim a Pokemon mystery gift code, and instead of giving me one code they gave me the *whole* stack of codes to me because nobody was taking the codes after like a week.
What Pokémon and what game?
@@totalmarh it was a shiny legendary for pokemon x and y, I don't remember the specific legendary tho

"Is your manager manipulative?"
"I'd say no to that if I were you" lmao
Everyone knows the smell of a new game
It’s amazing
Sega Genesis boxes when you open them and they smell like burnt plastic. :) I swear it's like a drug I can't get enough of it.
I love the smell of opening a Genesis game box. That burnt plastic smell brings me back to when I was just a kid. It hasn't left. It's like a time machine.
Vr BOI that’s why I love physical copies. I’m like “oh my god THIS IS SO COOL!” I just love looking at the art!
I prefer the taste of a new switch game card
@@Unigardy XD
Glad that JonTron is uploading again!
It's sad that Scott The Woz hasn't uploaded anything in months

Is JonTron the manager guy?

@@DatOneGuy901 *Slap* No.
$15 an HOUR?! No wonder they shutdown. A two hour rental is half the game
@@luiscastilloful I don't think they're talking about renting games. I think they're talking about renting the entire shop.
I had the exact same experience as you. The place I went to was called "Dvd" Avenue and it was just as similar as Revolution except that they were more on the competitive community which was fun to watch. It closed down last year sadly, but I still keep in contact with the owner. Good times
I crey evry tim.
Lil Pete in Ohio where I live there something similar to that called clarkade
Here in the UK we used to have a store called GameStation, during the 7th gen of consoles they often sold gen 6 games in bundles 3 for £20, which made me, a kid who only had a ps2 in 2009 and was on a budget, able to walk out with 3 games almost every month. The store shut down, probably because when we're way too generous, but it will always be one of my happiest childhood memories
My GCU expires in 2020. I’m stoked to have it until then, but also sad it’s gone.

Yeah, and the Wii and PS3 are retro too because they were released about 12 years ago
Has it honestly been that long?
I wish there was a gaming cafe. A tiny section to get some games, sells gaming gift cards for steam, xbox, you get the idea. A section for demos. One for PC's to play with. It's nice being around people that share the same interests or rather interest.
That would be pretty cool

Around 2010 I bought Pokémon LeafGreen and Emerald from a mom & pop game store.
2 weeks ago I discovered they’re fake cartridges and I can’t transfer my party members to Gen 4......my Sceptile is forever stuck in bootleg Chinese Hoenn
Bootleg gen 3 cartridges are RAMPANT in those stores. I have no idea why.
@@CrazyRiverOtter Because Ma and Paw have no idea what to look for so people buy them on ebay and sell them there.
id still buy them just to play the game
Gen 3-5 have a lot of fake games
8:00 This has happened to me more than once! Here in Germany, when I buy NEW games from a store (not specifically Gamestop, any store), it often happens that more expensive games are sold as "empty boxes", which means: the case packaging has been opened, the actual game has been taken out and left at some kind of information desk to avoid stealing the game. You can only pick up the actual game at the information desk by showing your purchase receipt once you have bought the game case in the store!...And you still have to pay the full price.
I have a local Game, which I've never been to and an independent shop called Gamepark. The guy there is really nice and will talk to you and even offer you a game of Super Mario World if it's quiet. He also sells Board Games, Card Games and LOTS of GW stuff (mainly 40k), and now hold regular tournaments and stuff. I'm taking this opportunity to thank him for everything. Thanks Jace!
EDIT 18/10/2020: Well, that GAME is gone and Gamepark, our FLGS, is the last man standing! The nearest shop that sells games is thirty miles away! TRIUMPH!
