When I lived close to the Morton Arboretum one of my favorite things was standing underneath a group of huge ginkgos on the day they decided to drop their leaves. It was so magical. The air was still and the leaves fell all around me like bright yellow snow. You could hear them landing on the ground and rubbing together in the air. Just magical. I’ll never forget it.
Winter Garden Stroll Ideas; discussing plans for spring in the beds, anything you’d do differently if you were starting over, winter interest (structure, form, texture) examples, a micro tour ie looking for the small or tiny stuff like close ups of mosses, lichens, branch structure.
Agreed. I love the winter stoll idea. I like to say I'm a gardener 365 days a year in SW MI. :) There is always something to do, planning, dreaming, in door prep for spring. Winter interest definitely doesn't get enough attention in the winter. I'd enjoy seeing your garden in the late fall and winter!
Erin, if you just want to take more breaks between videos and enjoy the slower season, we won't go anywhere! That said, I am loving watching that cuddly little bear grow up. He's already bigger than my 8 year old Australian Cattle Dog. I can't believe it! Appreciate you always sharing snippets of your sweet critters, cats included.
Your bird nest peek reminded me how when my daughter was little we would hang different colored yarn, string, twine out for the birds to use in nests. In the fall and winter we would look for nests that had those in them.
This video is so relaxing. My garden is looking like a mess and I felt so much better after looking at your garden that this is just fall and post frost look. I usually feel sad at this time of year, and it was nice to see how you are enjoying your space.
For winter, maybe a few garden strolls to show us winter interest in your garden. As mentioned sharpening and maintaining tools. Also, love your Q&A's...maybe have guest speakers, would even be fun if you collaborated with another Gardening UA-camr. It seems many of us follow the same channels, and I have also found new gardening channels through recommendations from those I already follow. Oh, please keep the Stromanthe! or give it to a friend; it is one of THE most favorite indoor houseplants I have. Love the dogs! Cheers!
I love the strolls. Maybe go to every other week in winter? I'd love to see a walk concentrating on evergreen interest in winter, special tree bark, any berries left. Also views that include the lake. I can't get a good orientation of your property in relation to the lake. I agree with Veleriezendiver below about close ups of small things with winter interest like moss. I garden all year long. Lots of work cutting back invasives at the edge of field and woods. I continue transplanting clumps of perennials until the ground freezes here in New England.
Great stroll today:) Very enjoyable. On the subject of winter strolls may I suggest a bit of travel to nearby (?) conservatories, galleries, growers? Interviews with locals are fun and informative! Looking forward to a great winter season!
I enjoy these weekly tours so much because they give us continuity and a sense of being grounded. How is your cat dealing with Magnus? And I must add that you're looking healthy and lighter! ❤🌳💐🌿
I have a majesty palm in a container that’s had several 31-34 degree frosts and it’s perfectly healthy. In fact pretty much everything is except to super frost sensitive things. More things are going dormant due to dryness than cold 😂
It’s been a bizarre season alright! We should have had a hard frost weeks ago, but the temperatures keep swooping back up into the high 70s. I swear we jumped a whole zone this year. I mean, I still have tomatoes!
A (tactful) walk around the neighborhood to see the lake and various plants. Magnus could go along too. I live in the high desert of Utah and I pretty much worship trees and water.
Thanks Erin. I love fall though we know what’s coming. I think we have winters so gardeners can rejuvenate. Not sure what our friends way down south do. 😊
In the winter can you take us through a garden plan out/ garden design? I love your path video and I’d love to hear your thoughts on starting a garden from scratch. Maybe a multi year plan? Example identifying sun, water, and then how best to build up soil before starting out planting? I also vote to see more Magnus. He’s getting big so fast 😅
I’m in Central MO (6b) pretty much everything in my garden is done with the exception of my Nicotiana. It is healthy, green & still blooming. I’m very surprised…this is the 1st year I have ever grown it.
Hi Erin, thanks again for the tour. What’s the purple aster? Where can I find it? Oh and the deep blue/purple flower behind the castor bean, what is that? Suggestions for winter videos, winterizing plants, seed selection and where to purchase, starting seeds, winter pruning, garden planning, garden design.
I was spoiled by the suggestion that I buy my sweet pea seeds from the UK (Roger Parsons) and I buy 5 of the strongest scented varieties ... the rest of the garden can do what it wants but my sweet peas are with me all summer and fall. The last plant has about 6" of new growth ... and it's a race to see if I can get one more flower before a sweet pea killing freeze. 🙂 Aren't the first and last flowers the best?? Thanks for a place to admit my sweet pea love ......
I was going to do that too, but I was scared off by the warning that they might not make it. I had previously bought a large number of seeds from the UK and not a single one germinated so I do think I was unlucky and had mine xrayed or whatever they sometimes do.
@@Gigi-fv9ky I think because my order is never over $25 its less likely to be pulled. (I hope). More seed companies here like Baker Creek and Botanical Interests sell High Scent seeds -- which is lovely and strongly scented one that I buy from Roger Parsons ... Last year I had lower germination rates -- but this year was good.
You're so lucky with the rain. I feel like it's never going to rain again here in columbus ohio! We are supposed to get some Tuesday but the systems dry up as they get here. I am still watering in November. Ugh.
I had a ginkgo just like that that had lost its leader. I prune it up from the bottom to try and force it to be taller and tried to established a leader as long as I could too. It got a V form and looked soo strange and pretty in the same time. I can see that the upper part of yours is the same V shape. Looved that tree so much but it was too big to move when we did 😔 Now seeing yours I realize what I can do with the new one. Cut off the leader🫣😬 Thank You for all the beautiful strolls etc in your garden! Lots of love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Love Magnus! What a fluff-muffin! ❤ Leaves are coming down here in NC, too. Just out blowing off the walkway before watching your video. So, my garlic bed took so long to sprout last year that I thought it had rotted, but I got the most wonderful German hardneck cloves that I'm still using. Planted some of it already, and this time won't worry about it.
My seed starting indoors did not go well this year. I would love to have an episode about starting seeds indoors in winter, techniques, tricks, caveats. Thanks
A series of videos showing winter tasks we may want to consider...that would be nice. One year you cleaned your pruners...I'd love to get the gear and sit down with you to clean and sharpen my pruners. I don’t know if it’s my imagination but since the puppy arrived you have a new sparkle….either way Magnus and Dorothy are always fun so thanks for sharing them with us. This year I did not mulch my perennial beds due to my JWs. Every year I buy beautiful bulk mulch from a nursery down the road and right after I spread it the worms leave big piles of poop on top. So this year I passed and so now (I’m scrambling) I’ve used some wood chips from my own trees, and leaves in parts of my veggie garden and some perennial beds. I called around and couldn’t find the salt hay you spread but I’ll probably get some straw for my garlic that needs to get planted this week. I’m wondering do you leave your hydrangea blooms on all winter? We had an incredible year here in S CT and my hydrangeas bloomed like never before, so I decided to leave the blooms on one of mine because I may never see it like this again. I hope we get to do some winter strolls mixed in with whatever you’re in the mood to share with us. 🙏

I don’t know how you upload but I live on the eastern edge of Michigan and my gardens are gone to frost at this point. I can’t believe Eastern Wisconsin is that much different. I’m on the Lake Huron side. I think you are on the Lake Michigan side?
Erin is just a few hundred feet from Lake Michigan which moderates her temps a little. I'm sure a mile or two inland has had harder freezes. Of course there can be slightly warmer microclimates within even a small property. For ex, areas near buildings, under trees, or near water can be a few degrees warmer this time of year
I'm just waiting for the daytime temps to not be in the 80s so I can plant all my fall seeds. I'm like an entire month behind, but October just wouldn't quit. Summer starts again in 4 months 😢
