The three things you mentioned are culturally specific - two is specific to the Japanese, and one is to Singapore. The name card/business card thing is VERY specific to the Japanese. When I joined the JICA trip to Japan in 1998, we were "educated" on the importance the Japanese ascribed to business cards. We were told to respectfully receive any cards offer, and to proffer our cards with two hands, with (as you mentioned) the card facing the recipient. Also, after receiving the card, one should give it adequate attention (study the card for a moment), and then if we are having a discussion or meeting, to put the card on the table in front of us, not into our pockets or file. Punctuality is another Japanese virtue. If the meeting is at 9, we can expect the organisers to call us at 8.50 to ask if we have trouble getting to the meeting. The Singapore delegates were quite efficient and would be "on time", but would be deemed "late" by our Japanese hosts. The delegates from the other ASEAN countries had more "flexible" definition of being on time. I would say we are not the worst, but we are not afraid of getting there. :-) As for "Jap", Singaporeans mean no disrespect. But then again, we don't mean alot of things, and we don't think too much about possible discourtesies. I found out that "oriental" is supposedly pejorative. I am not insulted by it. I take things in context. If intended as a pejorative, even "Chinese" can be intended to insult. There is much to admire and aspire to in Japanese culture and social norms. Singapore would be a nicer place if we had the social and cultural norms of Japan.
When I learnt the language, I also picked up all these Japanese manners along the way. I really love the Japanese manners especially the name card etiquette. I practise that and I get kind of annoyed when people just pass me their cards with one hand or upside down 😂😂😂 And yes I’ve been correcting people who use the term “Jap” around me since I was a student. I don’t like it, but I didn’t know it was used by racist in other countries. This is a good heads up video. People should stop shortening it! Not as if we shorten other races/countries so we should be fair to all. 🤗

I have heard of similar stories. I learn japanese, and there was once my teacher shared about how one had to wear socks while entering a japanese person's home. She also told us that she saw some people on forums talking about this. For example, a woman living in Singapore was quite upset when the aircon man didn't wear socks when he entered her home. It was interesting to learn more about japan in this video too!
Finally a famous Japanese in Singapore raises this term, which I don't even feel comfortable to type it out because all these while I know its not a nice word. All these years I have been trying to explain to those who use/say it, but they choose not to believe. I guess its easier to hear from a native. As for handling a business/name card. This is actually quite common business etiquette, which I be surprised if any Singaporeans actually don't know... 😥 However, one bad namecard habit I seen before in Singapore, is the person after receiving your namecard, he/she may start writing memo on the card while talking to you. 😨 Probably to that person, this is to remember details of you, but this is very very disrespectful.

In Germany, there is a similar term called "Japse" pronounced "Yapse" or "ヤップセ”, but it is a racist term, which discriminates japanese people or even asian people in general.

Definitely not. I'd say here (Finland) the most common way to give them is to use one hand and hand out the card sideways. Not that business cards are that common here anyway.
Growing up in Singapore during my childhood in the 90s, my parents taught and told me that being late is seen as being disrespectful even though I have been late on some occasions. I don't think it's just Japan where being late is seen as disrespectful.
Interesting 😊 Sometimes I use the word “jap” too, but among locals only. So far in my jobs we have the same practice of handing out and lining up the name cards, as what you described as how Japanese do. But I think it is true that business rules are not that strict here. I have heard about Japanese rules on using the elevator or taking the same car as boss/clients.
What about doing a compilation video of Japanese cuisine you found in Singapore that is on par with what you had on Japan? Even though Singapore has a lot of food from other cultures, it's always not authentic, or changed to suit local taste buds. It's hard to find truly authentic food at affordable prices. You could dig up old videos to compile while in this quarantine period!
To summarise in case TLDW: 1. Don't use the short form term "Jap", because it's considered rude or racist. Say the full thing - Japanese 2. Don't hand out name cards with one hand and upside down. Do it with both hands, right side up for the receiver. 3. Don't be late. Ever

I have a funny story! I’m working in a japanese mnc in singapore. So one time a client came over and we did our introductions. I bowed but the Japanese client raised his hand to shake and i banged my head on his hand 😅 Next we did the opposite! Then we finally blushed and we both bowed and shook hands at the same time... 🙈 The term Jap, actually i learnt that this is offensive, not from my Japanese friends but from my american friends in one of the online games we were playing together. The americans I met were very strongly against using this term so that’s how I learnt not to shorten it like this. Instead we use japanese or jp for short. I’m singaporean by the way.
Being late too is really bad etiquette in Singapore especially for the older generations. My dad used to tell me you cannot be earlier than 5 mins or later than 5 mins for meetings.
The thing about being late, as a Singaporean, I can relate 😂😂This country is small, so it doesn't rrl take long for us to travel from East to West,North to South. But for my case, I usually estimate the time I need to get there, and leaves my house on the dot. If I am late, probably either the bus came later than usual or the MRT breakdown. (Becuz most of the time, they are always punctual)
Yeah I noticed that in Japan they use both of their hands when giving and receiving something. I have never seen someone do that here in northern Europe but I think it's a very kind and respectful mannerism.

I once lost my name card case and was fumbling around in my bag for a good 5 minutes. Thank you for bringing the subject of "Jap" up. Personally, i heard from a Japanese living in Singapore that she was uncomfortable with the way how Singaporeans causally used the term. Hence, she tried to correct them. However according to her, this is their common reply: _"But you really [are a] Jap mah. Everyone [in sg] says Jap. I don't see why we have to change the way we speak since it is so commonly used [here]. As a japanese yourself [living] here in sg you should change the way how you interpret the word instead"_ I am not sure if she was the minority on this though. I can imagine her frustration when she frequently get replies like these. Thus, thank you for pointing that out!

All my friends and I always get offended whenever we hear someone saying “Jap” but we never correct them and pretend nothing happened to us because we don’t wanna be rude to them or we don’t wanna fight with them. Thanks for mentioning the first point. I have tried many years to tell my friends don't say that, but people really didn't know that it is rude. As for point 2 and 3, that's the appropriate business / daily manners regardless in which country, but unfortunately some people never bother to take note. There is one word which I heard that is consider rude to the Japanese, but Singaporeans might accidentally commit. That's the word "har?!". In Singaporean singlish context it actually just means "Why? What?" or exclamation over something, but it is considered quite demeaning to the Japanese (if I am not wrong).
Actually interesting thing about why linguistically or in slang singaporeans tend to shorten everything, it comes from our starting point as a multi-racial colony where barely anyone had a common language between them. So early Singapore - early independent Singapore relied on people communicating in the most “simplistic” ways in each other’s languages. With English thrown in as the common/unifying language, a lot of the words get shortened because of this need that existed to get our points across to each other as quickly and effectively as possible without a care about whether the language used was grammatically correct or not. This is the basis of Singlish, but I think it affects how our newer slang words get “created” as well. To many Singaporeans, it’s always about the fastest and most effective way to get a point across (you can see it in how we have variations of “can” like ‘can lah’, ‘can leh’, ‘can lorh’)

You can shorten the word Japanese or Japan by keying 'JPN' when sending text messages. However, during conversation, Japanese is how we should address the people from Japan. "Jap" is a racist call made by the British and American soldiers during World War 2, and it has since been classified as an offensive name to the Japanese.

日本語勉強しているSG生まれの子供にこの動画を紹介してもらいました。私も海外の方が断然長いのですが、共感できる内容です。あと、Ghibおじさんの笑った時と怒った時の表情のギャップがたまらなくいいです。笑

Definitely not. I'd say here (Finland) the most common way to give them is to use one hand and hand out the card sideways. Not that business cards are that common here anyway.

Growing up in Singapore during my childhood in the 90s, my parents taught and told me that being late is seen as being disrespectful even though I have been late on some occasions. I don't think it's just Japan where being late is seen as disrespectful.

Sometimes I use the word “jap” too, but among locals only.
So far in my jobs we have the same practice of handing out and lining up the name cards, as what you described as how Japanese do.
But I think it is true that business rules are not that strict here. I have heard about Japanese rules on using the elevator or taking the same car as boss/clients.
What about doing a compilation video of Japanese cuisine you found in Singapore that is on par with what you had on Japan? Even though Singapore has a lot of food from other cultures, it's always not authentic, or changed to suit local taste buds. It's hard to find truly authentic food at affordable prices. You could dig up old videos to compile while in this quarantine period!

I have a funny story! I’m working in a japanese mnc in singapore. So one time a client came over and we did our introductions. I bowed but the Japanese client raised his hand to shake and i banged my head on his hand 😅
Next we did the opposite! Then we finally blushed and we both bowed and shook hands at the same time... 🙈
The term Jap, actually i learnt that this is offensive, not from my Japanese friends but from my american friends in one of the online games we were playing together. The americans I met were very strongly against using this term so that’s how I learnt not to shorten it like this. Instead we use japanese or jp for short. I’m singaporean by the way.

Being late too is really bad etiquette in Singapore especially for the older generations. My dad used to tell me you cannot be earlier than 5 mins or later than 5 mins for meetings.
Exactly ! My dad would allow up to 15 minutes earlier for an appointment just in case he has a punctured tire .

The thing about being late, as a Singaporean, I can relate 😂😂This country is small, so it doesn't rrl take long for us to travel from East to West,North to South. But for my case, I usually estimate the time I need to get there, and leaves my house on the dot. If I am late, probably either the bus came later than usual or the MRT breakdown. (Becuz most of the time, they are always punctual)

Ohno I didn't know about the phrase "Jap", point well made thanks! The name card etiquette is actually also relevant, just maybe it's less stringent. I once lost my name card case and was fumbling around in my bag for a good 5 minutes. It honestly felt like forever and I'll never forgot that experience x.x Being late isn't good too, but I suppose yes it's pretty common here and more tolerated u_u

Thank you for bringing the subject of "Jap" up. Personally, i heard from a Japanese living in Singapore that she was uncomfortable with the way how Singaporeans causally used the term. Hence, she tried to correct them. However according to her, this is their common reply:
_"But you really [are a] Jap mah. Everyone [in sg] says Jap. I don't see why we have to change the way we speak since it is so commonly used [here]. As a japanese yourself [living] here in sg you should change the way how you interpret the word instead"_
I am not sure if she was the minority on this though. I can imagine her frustration when she frequently get replies like these. Thus, thank you for pointing that out!

All my friends and I always get offended whenever we hear someone saying “Jap” but we never correct them and pretend nothing happened to us because we don’t wanna be rude to them or we don’t wanna fight with them. But we always complain about the people saying “Jap” when we are only Japanese and foreign friends. No offense but it is true that we never be happy whenever we hear any racist term. Thanks for mentioning the first point. I have tried many years to tell my friends don't say that, but people really didn't know that it is rude. As for point 2 and 3, that's the appropriate business / daily manners regardless in which country, but unfortunately some people never bother to take note. There is one word which I heard that is consider rude to the Japanese, but Singaporeans might accidentally commit. That's the word "har?!". In Singaporean singlish context it actually just means "Why? What?" or exclamation over something, but it is considered quite demeaning to the Japanese (if I am not wrong).

Actually interesting thing about why linguistically or in slang singaporeans tend to shorten everything, it comes from our starting point as a multi-racial colony where barely anyone had a common language between them. So early Singapore - early independent Singapore relied on people communicating in the most “simplistic” ways in each other’s languages. With English thrown in as the common/unifying language, a lot of the words get shortened because of this need that existed to get our points across to each other as quickly and effectively as possible without a care about whether the language used was grammatically correct or not.
This is the basis of Singlish, but I think it affects how our newer slang words get “created” as well. To many Singaporeans, it’s always about the fastest and most effective way to get a point across (you can see it in how we have variations of “can” like ‘can lah’, ‘can leh’, ‘can lorh’)

I was also shocked at the beginning when I heard local people use the racist term Jap. Although I have been living in Singapore for a long time, I still hate people using Jap. Probably local people don’t mean anything racist but I still feel offended to be honest. Most of Japanese people including myself don’t want to be rude to them, so we don’t stop them or don’t fight with them, and just pretend not to be offended or upset when they use Jap. However, it’s true that non of Japanese people feel happy whenever we hear Jap because we all learned this is a racist term.

アメリカに留学を2年間してたのですが、かなりキツイ差別を受けましたね。むこうは軽い冗談のつもりで猿の真似をしていても、それを見ていた周りが面白がって差別がエスカレートしていくんですよね。留学先がケンタッキー州でど田舎だったこともあり発音がネイティブすぎて初めは聞き取れなかったりすることがあったのですがその都度バカにされましたね。留学して2ヶ月ぐらいはとても孤独でした。でも今ではその経験があったから色んなことに挑戦する、一歩踏み出す勇気と度胸がついたと思ってます。

Your Singlish sounds authentic! Except for a weird pause before "lah". Most non-Singaporeans unconsciously pause before their lah leh lor, perhaps they can't decide swiftly which one to use.
