  • Join me in my Victoria 3 beginner guide Let's Play series as the United States of America. I'll be explaining the game's mechanics and features as well as discussing my reasoning and strategy as I play, thus this walkthrough series will serve as useful guide and tutorial for new players. Our goals for this campaign will be to conquer all the territory of modern continental USA, as well as to ban slavery without causing the American Civil War. We'll be pursing liberal, democratic policies when it comes to our laws. If we have time, we may also attempt to either subjugate or conquer our neighbors in Canada and Mexico.
    You can purchase the game on Steam

      Yeah I really like the complexity, Vic2 was also super complex. I know some people were mad about the military changes, but I gotta say, the things Vic2 did really well (a big vibrant world, economics, and internal politics/spheres of influence), Vic3 is greaaat at.

      See where I think if you just want to worry about economics then just go play a city building game. The whole point of these games is to simulate real world economic problems which include war. This why people don't play board games anymore cause you can't blow shit up. Not to mention there is about 6 of these games out right now and they all feel the same. Glad I bought them on sale . Slow boring games. Rather play Anno or AoE4 . Not everyone works from home and has time to stare at a virtual board game

    I've never tried the Victoria series before, so I'm very intrigued to see how your playthrough turns out! Your slower, more methodical approach to Paradox games (still holding out on a future Stellaris run someday) has always been my preference, so I was happy to see the notification. Thank you so much for this video. It really taught me how best to use the US and really actually playout how we are. I found actually starting up one of each farm, ranch, mine and so on that for America this idea seemed to work very well. I had a huge amount of iron and other resources flooding the market which dropped price. As each area went gold I then just upgraded that one. It ended up causing just a cycle of building constantly. I beat Mexico in the war in a blood bath. I wiped out the whole country before allowing to win. I started making central America just all puppets along with taking of Panama for myself. The British decided to be stupid and support Central America allowing me to demand Canada at one point. I now have the Wester Hemisphere and I can't build as fast as I make money.

    Playing as the more advanced nations definitely helps on the technology front. Playing as Chile who take a couple of years to even get a university and start with basically no technology, it takes a lot longer to get the full tech tree than what USA, Prussia or some of the other great powers will.

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому

      Yes, that's of course true, but would have been nice if there was enough techs for even more advanced countries to keep researching until the end. The tech trees are frankly too small IMO

    • @cragnamorra
      @cragnamorra Рік тому

      I also did the Chile start for the first learning run. Interestingly, finished the last tech in 1932. Suggests that the tech tree is paced in such a way that a relatively small backward country, with appropriate econ/political choices along the way, can finish it just in the nick of time to end the game as a Great Power (which also happened - barely - around the same time).

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому +1

      How did you pass it in 1836 though? Laws take quite some time to pass, even with a lot of support. Banning slavery would have quite a bit of opposition, which would delay it passing. I don't see how you would pass it in just one year. And I'm surprised you didn't see a political movement to stop it from being banned, which happened to me. Political movements create a very large amount of radicals if they have a lot of support, and this is how a civil war can be triggered (large number of radicals or states in turmoil).

    • @adam_krauss
      @adam_krauss Рік тому

      @@PraetorianHiJynx I got an event to increase the enactment chance, but even if I didn't it the odds were good to pass it eventually. I started the debate before unpausing. You gotta be a little aggressive and stack the government with interest groups who want to abolish slavery and kick the planters out. I also recommend bolstering the intelligentsia and suppressing the planters with your authority and make sure the democrats get pummeled in the election. I realize there was a lot of r&g to get it banned before the election, but theres no r&g required if you do those things itll be banned by 39 nearly 100% of the time

    It's hard to role-play a national track that is different than one's own core values. It seems Americans want America to develop as it did. Nice to see more discussion of alternatives, costs and benefits. So, in this play through the emphasis is all on economic and social development. Laudable, but strategically is it best long term? Perhaps the scripted events in the game don't provide for that flexibility.

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому

      The more "liberal" policies do seem to be superior in Victoria 3, so I think they are strategically better than the more conservative policies of historical 19th century America. Industrialization is also almost exclusively beneficial in the game, as it ignores many of the more negative aspects of the process, so it's definitely better to embrace it as soon as possible. Historically, the US didn't industrialize as quickly as it could have due to ideological reasons, not because that was the more efficient option. The original Republicans (not to be confused with the modern GOP, which didn't form until the second half of the century) believed that it was important for the US to remain an agricultural society, thus they were opposed to policies which favored commerce and industrialization. In addition, one of the main barriers to industrialization for the US was its abysmal transportation and infrastructure network. Improving this was necessary, but our early leaders couldn't agree on whether or not this was a constitutional role for the federal government, since the constitution did not explicitly grant it that power. So while they did improve it to some degree, such as the National Road, the government didn't do nearly enough until the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    Trying to learn the game, and I'm curious why you didn't add the Whig Party to your active government to try to pass Guaranteed Liberties, since the Intelligentsia were so strongly in favor. Would the hit to Legitimacy have been more harmful than their support would have been helpful?

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому

      Well an interest group does not need to be in government to support a law once it's under debate, you only need to have at least one interest group in the government who is willing to support it in order to try to pass the law. Once the law is under debate, all interest groups can either increase or decrease the chance that it'll pass, regardless of if they're in the government or not.

    How much freedom does this game give you? Does fulfilling journal entries give benefits?
    One thing that kind of turns me off are those events and goals all seem based on recreating history. In CK3 there's not a lot of that from what I've played. Since that game is more dynasty-focused with the world's families being vastly different one generation later history changes almost immediately. So I just wonder how much this game tries to funnel you down a certain way to play your country or how crazy it can become.

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому

      Fulfilling journal entries does give benefits, some minor and some quite major. But for the most part, the game doesn't feel very railroaded to recreate history. In fact, each campaign typically diverges from history significantly, as you would expect with any Paradox game.

    Have they fixed taxation? In vicky 2 your pops don’t mind being taxed and tariffed at 100% as long as you pass whatever reforms they desire. I know it’s not 100 effective tax but it makes playing countries with large populations but no industry stupidly wealthy, austria and russia especially.

    • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому

      Now taxation primarily affects the number of radicals you get from standard of living decreasing. So taxing them heavily may result in their standard of living decreasing (since they have less money), and since they're at a higher tax rate you'll get more radicals against your government since they blame their woes on the high taxes. So basically, you can get away with high taxes if it doesn't affect their standard of living too much. Even if it does, radicals only become a problem if you can't control turmoil or if you have a lot of political movements. The main concern with higher taxes isn't unhappy pops, but the lower standard of living and less pop wealth, meaning they can't buy as many resources, which will affect your industry and trade.

      Well as I mentioned in the video, my problem was that I had a large amount of radicals and turmoil across half my states, so I had pissed off so many people that they were willing to rebel over just about anything lol. About half of those came from the political movement demanding that I enact Migration Controls (the same movement that we just got in this series). I did a lot of testing as well, changing production methods and disbanding buildings constantly to see how it affected things, which costed people jobs and created more radicals. In addition, it was on the pre-release version of the game, so perhaps not everything was fully balanced. But basically, I easily reduced the power of the aristocrats who opposed disbanding slavery, the problem was that everyone else was so angry with me that they were going to oppose any law I tried to pass at that moment, hence why I had to wait so long to try again, once I had gotten the number of radicals and turmoiled states down. So I'm sure you can disband slavery much quicker, I never said otherwise :)

    A Surprise Visit
    The Senator awoke to the loud and sporadic sound of thumping at his front door.
    "He's dead!" Roared Harrison barging past a burry eyed Richards
    "Who's dead?" Exclaimed Richards his heart almost skipping a beat in fright
    "The President!" He yelled slamming the newspaper he was gripping tightly into his colleague's chest
    "What!? How!?
    "Old age! Poisoning! Who cares! All that matters is who's going to replace him!"
    "Well that would be Vice President Isaac Hull."
    "I'm aware! He's a bloody Democrat with wealthy land owner friends just like Elie but unlike the late admiral he actually knows what he's doing when it comes to politics!"
    "Hang on. Why are the press learning about this first!?" Replied Richards rather confused
    "They're not! I have a printer friend who's got people inside the White House, for a little bribe they tell him anything news worthy, let's him get a head start over the competition." Explained Harrison still shaking with rage.
    "The planters were dangerous enough when they had the majority, now they've managed to manoeuvre a competent puppet behind the desk! I'm almost inclined to believe they planned all of this!"
    "You think the Dems capable of murder?" Queried Richards a look of doubt briefly crossing his face
    "They're slavers! They view the negro as inhuman simply because their skin runs darker than ours! Sots like that are capable of anything!" Continued Harrison his face turning a deeper and deeper shade of red
    "Have you any pr....."
    "Of course not!" He interrupted
    "But like I said it doesn't matter now! What does is that we are going to have to call in every favour we've ever garnered to curb anything those whippers put forth! Lest they turn the North into the South!"
    "You overreact Harrison, why not bide our time? Ride out this tidal wave until the next election? Then crush those bondage loving bastards at the polls?" Cautioned Richards
    "And how do you suppose we do that!? Because incase you've forgotten it was us getting crushed at the polls last year!" Shrieked Harrison
    "We do everything in our power to make sure their political machinations never see the light of day, but "unfortunately" some of their dastardly policies inevitably slip through the cracks. Sure they'll get a little richer but what's embraced by the slave states will be repulsed by the free ones, thus Riling up the more populous North and thereby prodding people to get out there and vote Whig next election!"
    "Are you mad!? Richards these are the same people who would see your wife clamped in chains! The policies they're pushing could start a civil war! One that if they won would bring about an America not seen since the days of King George!"
    "Honey! Is everything alright?" Came a voice from behind the politicking gentlemen
    "Ah! Darling. My apologies if we woke you. Mr Harrison was just leaving."
    "Richards are you listening to me! We need to....."
    "Yes. Call in those favours I heard. I'll see you at the capitol in the morning."
    "I.....yes.......indeed. Ahm......good day Mrs Richards." Said Harrison heading for the door
    "What was all that about?" Asked Margaret
    "I'll tell you later." Sighed Richards

    Just subscribed and love the content. Andrew Jackson get a bad rep for sure but he did sell slaves, wagons, horses, and other goods to the natives before they left at a hugely discounted rate. He also felt that it would be best for them in the long run because he didn’t think they would ever fit in to white society. He did not hate natives. He adopted a native and treated him like a son. Andrew Jackson did some good things regarding the Bank of the US? Eeeeeh. It kept the US from developing a necessary centralized banking system and led to a finanical panic down the road. Jackson's political philosophy was very much agrarian and totally out of step with the direction the world was moving in. Even Polk, a president very much styled as a Jacksonian walked back the hardline stance against a National Bank.
    Not to say that everything Jackson did was bad. Expanding the vote to include non-landed white men was arguably the most important move to the gradual expansion of the franchise the US cotninued to develop through the years. Definitely deserving of the mixed legacy he has now, when you factor in his disregard for the rule of law and laying the framework for genocide.

    Game feels like "epic whig history simulator " where the arc of history inevitably bends towards drag queen story hour "and that's a Good Thing™". "Bigoted" modifier makes a leader "unpopular"? • @PraetorianHiJynx
      @PraetorianHiJynx  Рік тому +3

      I think you're misinterpreting the definition of the word "bigoted." It doesn't simply mean someone who is racist or sexist or whatever, as these were overall much more acceptable in the 1800s than they are today. The definition is "a person obstinately and unreasonably wedded to a particular religious creed, opinion, or ritual." Those types of people, who insist their opinion or belief is more correct than any others, even in the face of superior arguments that go against them, are intolerable to be around. They come across as arrogant, unreasonable, and ignorant. And on your other point, you can play the game however you want to. However, it's undeniably true that liberalism (in the classical sense, not the modern one) and capitalism, while flawed, are superior to the political and economic systems that came before, thus it makes sense for them to be superior in the game. If you wish you can of course stay with an agrarian economy and landed elites controlling the politics, while rejecting industrialization and capitalism, but like in history you'll face economic consequences for doing so.

      this is a definition literally no one uses, obviously this word is used primarily for its moral judgement

      Holding a belief without being convinced of it's correctness is something only manipulative psychopaths do. And I have yet to meet a leftist that wouldn't insist on him being more correct than any other chud.
      > They come across as arrogant, unreasonable, and ignorant.
      There are things that cannot be adjudicated in the epic free marketplace of ideas. This idea, that once sufficient amount of enlightenment, knowledge acquisition and debate is applied to an issue, it will inevitably resolve into a single objective truth is exactly the problem with whig view of history and marxist historical dialectic. There are values that are fundamentally irreconcilable, like abortion and drag queen story hour.
      > And on your other point, you can play the game however you want to.
      The game obviously frames stuff like women's lib and universal suffrage as a unequivocally good technological advancement, like going from a steam engine to a combustion engine. "Egalitarian society" is somehow one of the primary aspirations, alongside straight-forwardly value free quantitative achievements of economic dominance and military dominance. It inevitably presupposes that egalitarianism is simply good, and lack of it bad, in the same way having a small economy is worse than having a great economy.
      Obviously it isn't possible to create a "make your own ideology simulator", that accurately models millions of people's behavior and reaction to an infinite set of possible policies, but this one doesn't try much, if at all not to apply the progressive view of history.

      "this is a definition literally no one uses, obviously this word is used primarily for its moral judgement"
      That's not how the word was used in 1836, so I'm not seeing your issue.
      "Holding a belief without being convinced of it's correctness is something only manipulative psychopaths do. And I have yet to meet a leftist that wouldn't insist on him being more correct than any other chud."
      You conveniently left out the most important part of that sentence, "even in the face of superior arguments that go against them." So basically you're completely changing the meaning of what I said and then trying to make an argument against it.
      "There are things that cannot be adjudicated in the epic free marketplace of ideas."
      You seem to be wanting to turn this into a political discussion and this isn't the place to do it (it's just a gaming video man). I was only explaining a definition for you and why that trait might make that person more unlikable.
      "The game obviously frames stuff like women's lib and universal suffrage as a unequivocally good technological advancement"
      That's only if you incorrectly see the last law in each set as the "best option" and the one the game wants you to enact. But your argument that this is all political propaganda in support of a liberal democratic system doesn't hold up if you pay attention and see that colonial exploitation, isolationism, closed borders, legacy slavery, and militarized police are at the bottom of their categories.

      I assume that's Transylvania University, it was founded in 1780 and is one of the older universities in the US (though certainly not the oldest). Originally the US did not have an income tax at the start of the game, just based on the old dev diaries, so I'm assuming Paradox changed it for balance reasons. And West Virginia exists simply due to how states work in the game, which remember is a core part of the game and not simply a feature for the US and other federations. There is no way to create new states in the game's code, so it wouldn't possible to have West Virginia at all if it wasn't in the game at start. Victoria 3 does have a ton of historical inaccuracies, but I don't think any of the ones you mention are that big of a deal considering the reasons they're that way at the moment :)
