Maui is well known for the Hana Highway, a perilous drive with over 600 curves and 59 bridges through lush tropical jungle and breathtaking scenery. Less known is the road from Kahului to Kaanapali, which boasts similar if not more intense narrow and dangerous roadways. One stretch is over a quarter mile long with one lane, no shoulder, a cliff on one side and a hundred foot straight drop on the other. If traffic comes the other way while your on that stretch... well, watch the video and see. Shot entirely with the GoPro Hero 3 Black between 1080p @ 60fps and 720p @ 120fps. I drove this road & I've never been so terrified in my life!!!!
It was my 82 year old aunt, this past May 2018, who said "keep going!!" and so I did, not knowing the road narrowed to only one lane. I was terrified and petrified. I've never been so afraid in my life. I could hardly think my mind was so frozen. Later that night, I was looking at the map, and in red letters it said "traveling on this road could void your rental car agreement" Ann L.
I'm laughing so hard at this because I went through the exact thing like you did. From the ground level the narrow road was no sweat until I went further it got narrower. I was too stubborn to turn around while I still can until I reach the top level the road they weren't kidding. The road become a one road for both traffic, let alone curvy road on the steep cliff on top of the mountain with no rail? To make thing worse, every now and then there's a warning of "falling rocks". How would I escape that? Then I was faced with a car coming from the opposite direction, he's looking at me to move over to the shoulder by the cliff and I'm looking at him and the cliff and shook my head "no way". Luckily he decided to be the brave one and let me pass through, thank God! Since it's too late to turn around, I kept going until reaching the ground level. By that time I was ready to get out of the car and kiss the ground for making out alive. When I return the car, I look over the map and found out that I wasn't supposed to go there with the rental but nobody needs to know where I've been. They should have verbally warn me before hand. I didn't bother with the map because they said you can't get lost on this island.🤷♀️ 😂
It’s been 12 years since our trip there. My husband & I (along w our 8yr old daughter) set out later than expected that day. When we returned it was dark. My husband didn’t want to backtrack because he saw we can take the “backroad” & can “save” time. I’ve never been as terrified as I was that night driving on this road….on vacation! I kept praying to God to let me live another day. I could sense my husband was nervous too but he didn’t want to scare our daughter so he kept his cool. Once we reached our hotel he confess it was one of the scariest drive ever. He was just hoping we didn’t pop a tire on that part of the road or the rental company ain’t coming for us. He knew we weren’t supposed to drive there. As of recent, my sisters want us to take a trip to Maui and do the road to Hana. Said I’ll only do it again if we get someone who is familiar with the road to drive us.
Thank god I didn't encounter any oncoming traffic when we were on this - I was stressed out enough having my 3 kids in the backseat giggling, while I was freaking out looking over the ledge! Great vid though - especially the finish!
We took this road by mistake , it was night time and drizzling . I couldn't sleep properly for next few night after we reached hotel.
Same :)
Me too!!
Vikas Mishra oh my gosh!! Took it today in big truck... uninformed!! Never again!!! Scary as heck!! I wanted to walk instead!
That’s awesome!!!
We set out later than expected that day and by the time we returned back it was late. The road was dark, curvy and scary. I kept praying nothing happens to us. I just want to get back to hotel and live to see another day! Still traumatized, yes.
I just drove this road last Tuesday, by myself, and was amazed by the beauty, sure the road was tight and met a lot of oncoming traffic, but I know how to drive and loved every inch of it and all the gorgeous sites. Definitely would do it again.
Did you survive?
My wife and I did this drive and felt like we were going to go off the road. Thanks for taking this video so we could relive it.
This video is so hilarious because I can resonate to that, especially at the end. 😂
Thanks for allowing me to relive this! Awesome road not for the faint of heart.
We been there !!! The spot at :44 has to be one of the most gorgeous places i've ever seen in my life. We stopped took a breath and continued on. It was insane
This is road is not joke. I had no idea what I was getting my wife and I into. We took a tour on a roads like this in the Highlands of Scotland but this was worst cause I was driving. Great vid!
Totally AWESOME that last move. I felt like I was watching Mortal Kombat :D
Hahaha...nice little film. My wife and I did the Hana loop tour when we were there last month. It was great, but I wouldn't be too eager to drive it myself. Maybe in a _really_ small car. We also had a look at the Kahului-Kaanpali road, but we turned back about Mile 36...the wife was scared and I was having no fun not being able to take my eyes off the road...I'm glad we we turned before it got any narrower.
Just drove this road yesterday in the opposite direction and am still traumatized. Skill kept us on the road, luck kept us from a head-on collision around hair-pin turns.
This road is terrifying with an Australian at the wheel 😂
molto bello...anche il pezzo finale....
what is this road - can anyone tell me the name so i can avoid it 😅
They're suppose to reverse since you're on makai side.
We also took this road by mistake while raining it wasn't until we reached the hotel to see what route we took from the airport , our second visit to maui and OMG when i realized the road we took i was terrified BUT it was beautiful
Love that road!! I drove it yesterday
It’s a unspoken but pretty much locals only road. Night drives are the best and safer if you’re observant. Not saying it’s a safe road. But being from Lahaina that drive is sentimental.
Big mistake! I wish there were signs indicating that road was going to be super narrow!
yajcaivplawv88 there are
The sign did said narrow road ahead, but you're right, they should have said super narrow and one lane. I made a mistake and glad I made it to the other side alive. Lol
Which road is this in west Maui and from where to where ? I am going to west Maui soon and I don’t want to drive this abroad a smay be GPS😅guide me to
Love it
haha nice man good way to timelapse
We were doing it clockwise and my girlfriend freaked out. I had to turn around half way and never finished the drive! I actually made a three point turn on it in a Camaro believe it or not. Pays to have had off road experience.
sharpstat bullshit😐
That was cool
sick bro!
Driving counter clockwise in a convertible was terrifying. As the driver I could not see how close I was to the edge.
I just took this drive today and about lost my Sh-t. Had I known before I would never have done it.
We did that drive twice, the best part is that the rental car companies don't cover that road
There is a typo in subscribe.
Took this road by mistake ended up stuck on 1:47 and not knowing what to do. There was coming up the hill and a rain storm and there I was wondering what to do. The man in the lead car coming up got out and helped me back up the hill. My wife at this time was so scared that she got out of the car and started walking. I picked her up about a mile on the other side of the ravine. I didn't get to see much do to the weather and the fact I was completely terrified. I would like to drive the road again but I would go the other direction so I would be on the edge of the cliff if I had to back up and I would ride a motorcycle.
Omg my family of 5 and I took this road
On our way to kapalua from the airport by accident...stupid google maps...we were in a damn mini van and had no fucking idea what we were getting into mans! I wanted to cry the whole time lol
SirMamSir 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hit this road by mistake, almost shibarffed several times.
I just drove this rode in a Ford explorer. Yikes. In some areas it is literally one lane.
Clockwise and Julia's Banana Bread....
Be a neat ride, on a bike
