    Happy you made a spear with some taper! It's something overlooked with a lot of reenactment frankly because it so much easier to just fit a head on a dowel. Not only does it change the balance but also the handling of the spear. Axial/distal taper really changes the feeling of weapons. The more taper the better for handling, but strength decreases as well. If anyone at home wants to feel the difference, gab a pool cue and see how much more control you have compared to a similar sized dowel, it's a crazy difference.
    Thanks for making the videos I have always wanted to make!

    I know this comment is not exactly on topic but something I've been wondering while watching your videos and browsing through the websites that make custom armours is just that what are people's opinions on wearing makeup while reenacting (not corpse paint or egirl makeup just something minimal with wings) and what is the consensus on tattoos/body mods like piercings?

    • @LeonidasSparta-Fun-History
      @LeonidasSparta-Fun-History  5 місяців тому +2

      @@OtherlingQueen hi!! You can't really do anything about tattoos or piercings, and obviously we are just modern people, so that is fine! Now, depending on the tattoo, it can take away from your impression just because it is a moderm tattoo. Hopefully they can be covered up, but hey, we're not full time ancient people :) We have a lot of guys with tattoos in our group too. As for makeup, id advise against it, that is something which can be neglected and give a more authentic feel. Now, if you are a lot more comfortable with it, then subtle makeup is best. I would not do lashes, for example. I myself would have to do more research on makeup in the period too, maybe lipstick (or something similar) was present? But again, anything modern we should try to remove. Hope this helps!

      I personally have four tattoos, one of which can be seen at all times, and in ancient Greece, it would make me either as a slave to the Greeks or as a Thracian. Now, as Adam has already said, most reenactors have tattoos that we can’t really cover up, so we just ignore them because we aren’t ancient Greeks. As for makeup, it’s a bit of a tricky situation. If you wanted to wear makeup to help catch attention to certain parts of your face to make you more photogenic in armor, I completely understand, but ancient Greece was very misogynistic, and any man seen wearing makeup would be considered effeminate, and in some places would lose citizenship. At the end of the day, it’s up to you, but if you’re at an event, please don’t tell the public that makeup was a commonality.

    Were there any spears during the archaic period that were made from bronze?

  • @dannygo500
    @dannygo500 5 місяців тому

    Very cool, but I would recommend going the extra mile and finding a hardwood shaft instead of softwood as it is much stronger and flexible. Also try pinning the spearhead on to the end of the shaft, to make sure it never comes off when you don't want it to, which in some situations might be dangerous if the blade is sharpened properly.

    • @LeonidasSparta-Fun-History
      @LeonidasSparta-Fun-History  5 місяців тому +1

      Pine is absolutely fine for spears, used it for over 8 years, and many other reenactors use it. Not to mention its lighter than hardwood, which is great for use! Many have no evidence of pins, and frankly it doesnt need them i dont think. Glue and friction fit is incredibly strong. Its difficult for me to pull it off, as in i have to hold it down and twist and pull it off, let alone when its glued. My javelins are just glued and friction fitted, and they havent come loose from getting thrown into all sorts of wood, ground, etc.

    • @LeonidasSparta-Fun-History

    • @dannygo500
      @dannygo500 5 місяців тому

      @@LeonidasSparta-Fun-History Maybe pine works good for spears with a bit bigger sockets but with mine I think I will use oak since I need every last bit of strength and my socket isn't very big inside. @dannygo500 5 місяців тому

      @@LeonidasSparta-Fun-History Keep in mind that a lot more stresses are put on the spears in real battle, but for reenachtment pine is probably perfectly fine.
