    How A Fish Seller Built An Unstoppable Empire (The Controversial Samsung Story) - how did Samsung go from a grocery store to one of the biggest business empires in the world? Samsung not only dominate in tech, but many other industries you may not even realize. Welcome to another MagnatesMedia mini business movie, telling the INSANE Controversial Samsung Story! 😉

    We go on a journey from how Samsung began, up until present day, looking at the huge size of Samsung and the many industries it operates in, along with their biggest marketing disaster ever.
    An important note: With all of these business stories, the intention is not to try and single out one specific company. I make videos about LOTS of different companies, this episode just happens to be about Samsung. I have absolutely nothing against Samsung, and in fact I use their products myself. The purpose of these videos is simply to summarise the interesting stories behind many different big businesses.

    Just adding to the video: Founder of Samsung Mr. Lee Byung Chul also made CJ (Major food, Major Entertainment, logistics, etc), SSG (biggest malls, etc), Saehan, and Hansol. Also, he partially owned n influenced Korean news platforms... People outside of Korea don't really realize this but Samsung family owns Korea... There is no emperor system in Korea but that family line is basically the one.. It's kind of insane how much they own but the companies are just not named "Samsung". They are bigger than how they look from outside. Apple is bigger in assets but the power this family has is up to a debate. I think Apple has more power and money though. But, I only said "up to a debate" because USA has so many powerful companies n family trees. Whereas, Korea only has 2 family: Samsung & Hyundai. Political power can be debatable because other major companies in USA has to share the pie. Hopefully, South Korea can become like USA, where USA has various power horse firms, rather than just one big powerful company. Lastly, the video edit was legit !! Thank you for taking away my sleep time lol jkjk

      America had a similar issue with the do called robber barons ( Rockefeller, Carnegie, JP Morgan, Van Der Bilt etc etc ) what Korea needs is some strong anti monopoly laws and a restructuring of the economy around mid-sized companies....Though that may be a bit difficult due to the massive power that these families have it's not impossible, but it would take strong political figures like Roosevelt in the US who would stand up to them, or the people uniting against them, good luck to you and may your country continue to prosper!

    How did LG manage to become a Chaebol and Samsung's competitor when Samsung had so much influence and power in South Korea?

    • @coversbyrichard
      @coversbyrichard 9 місяців тому +8

      LG is nowhere near as big as Samsung.
      LG is primarily electronics and engineering conglomerate with some businesses in chemicals and power generation (electric grid).
      Samsung is more than that - they are known in the West as an electronics company but Samsung is also banking, finance, investments, insurance, manufacturing, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, import/export, clothing, etc etc…
      The reason why even as a Korean, don’t buy Samsung is because I view Samsung as a “jack of all trades, master of none”. I’ve always found LG’s electronics and home appliances to always be of a higher quality than Samsungs which is why all my appliances are LG and not Samsung.
      LG is a Chaebol with a focus and control of a specific industry, which is why it’s smaller. Samsung is a Chaebol based on overall size across the board… if that makes sense…
      I think LG’s business is way more ethical (not saying much) than Samsung. There is a problem when you have one company that is the everything company…

    I think you failed to mention how big the impact of the major reason how korea's top 5 corps (such as samsung) gained their power actually was. Namely the state support which was implemented in the 70s and originally meant to grow korea's economy as a whole by supporting certain private businesses. While this worked rather well originally , it nowadays (ever since the 90s really) has lead to some major problems. Mostly the small business issue you mentioned.

      @@spinyslasher6586 well I did. Granted I may have formulated the comment better in hindsight. I just felt that the way the story was built up and ultimately concluded was too much focused on the individual, while the larger factor was downplayed.
      I apologize if this has caused any misunderstanding and I'll try to be more concise in future comments. Admittedly the "how big the impact ..." alone was likely not clear enough on what my actual criticism was.

    • @tedkaczynskiamericanhero3916
      @tedkaczynskiamericanhero3916 Рік тому

      That actually makes sense because the US likes to crush small businesses as well.
      Heavy handed regulations written by the big corporations have ensured this.
      Also, I've never been to Korea at all, but I think I would love it.
      Spicy food, good BBQ, and every Korean movie or show I've watched (with subtitles) is always great!
      Seems they keep politics out of entertainment, and I don't want somebody's political beliefs jammed down my throat, even if they agree with me and especially if they disagree.
      These days watching anything from Hollywood is like being a masochist.

    You have to understand that they did not have completely humble beginnings; these were people who came from some money and a good foundation to start on. My great-grandaunt was married to the founder of LG, who grew up around these people who founded Samsung and other companies. They were all college-educated (uncommon at that time in history) and had servants/housemaids and money to travel for leisure or to learn a trade. My great-great-grandfather apparently squandered all his wealth having fun in China while his colleagues were learning about sugarcanes and other goods.
