  • Tucked away in a quiet corner of Delaware are the remains of a once thriving industry centered on a now abandoned stone quarry and lime kilns that have lay dormant for over a century. Quicklime produced in these kilns supported important aspects of life in 19th Century America in northern Delaware and neighboring states.
Early American industry relied heavily on European immigrants, primarily the Irish for much of the 19th Century.

This video caught my eye because I've seen lime quarries and furnaces from a bygone era up in Rockland and Rockport, Maine. At one time a big local industry. Thanks.

It’s my pleasure. In this area(Delaware,Southeastern PA), lime works were a major industry, too. It seemed like one couldn’t throw a rock without hitting one. Sadly, very few remain. This one, located on my job site, is in pretty poor condition. I’d LOVE to restore it eventually. We’ll see.

You have a mid-atlantic accent. Like a Philly or Baltimore accent.

Yep, sounds about right. I’m literally exactly halfway between Baltimore and Philadelphia, right where Md, De, and Pa come together.
