University vice chancellors are being paid 'far too much'

  • The Australian’s Higher Education Editor Tim Dodd says as universities begin to make painful changes to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic, extremely well paid vice chancellors may have to accept a salary cut to remain “credible”.
Over the weekend the Morrison government announced it will inject $18 billion dollars into the higher education sector via a relief package.
Mr Dodd told Sky News “the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney, Michael Spence, gets about $1.5 million dollars a year”.
“If you compare it to major corporates it’s probably about right but I think we all have to realise that Universities are not major corporates," he said.
"The interesting thing about Michael Spence is that he has just accepted a job next year to be the head of the University College of London which is one of the top universities in the UK... and he’s going there for half the salary”.
“Australia clearly is paying its vice chancellors way above what you would normally expect them to get if your world bench-marking”.

WAYNE F and making it that much harder for Australians to go to university. These foreign students have their fees paid by their government.

I meant that the universities don't really serve the people anymore. What you mean by free is that education should be paid out of general taxation but that's not free. I don't know why the fee's are so high it's not justified considering the cost of living.

I’m a university professor in Australia. When I moved here on a global talent visa in 2016, I received a 42% salary increase with less responsibilities. When I started my career 20 years ago, I have observed university administrators gradually take all power of direction away from academics and towards ‘administrators’ who barely have a grasp of reality and zero accountability. I don’t have a problem with Outgoing Sydney VC. He presides over a vastly greater, and more accomplished flock than all but a handful of his HE peers. There is an unwarranted clamour for ‘equity’ rather than equality which is the cancer of Australian HE progress, relative to international counterparts.

Job description of a University Vice Chancellor:"create unnecessary disruptions and sell them as "improvements", replace academic rigour with hollow public relations campaigns, subsidize massive salary by selling useless and dumbed-down courses to gullible students, clear off to another institution before the shit hits the fan." It is always the same story.

This would be the same people that nurture Chinese influence and sell Australian funded research knowledge to students to take to China.
This would be the same people that encouraged Chinese students with cash incentives if they could circumvent the national quarantine laws.
This would be the same people whose main concern in the whole world is their own funding and wokeness.
I'm infuriated that a single cent of my taxes are spent there.

They've been enjoying that much money from funding and international students for years. Now they're saying funding is not enough? God, we need a reform. We should shut down these universities or just label them "private, for-profit" straight away. We need a NATION-WIDE public university that doesn't charge excessive fees and focuses on real learning, with people in management not getting paid that ridiculously high (No Fat Cats). Also, graduating from an Australian uni should not link to the migration system or a chance to get permanent residency because that's the thing that these universities use to create desire in overseas students and suck their money. To me, that's just greed.

Rivers of gold from foreign students. have standards been lowered and lectures simplified to be able to hand these overseas students their piece of paper? My children attended two different unis and at both were students from overseas who couldn't understand the lectures and couldn't take part in discussions because their English was so poor yet they graduated.

Universities were already redundant 20 years ago.... even more so toward 2010's as the writing on the wall said a university education was not returning an economic value for most people. And universities were hostile environments for Straight Christian White Men. Universities were becoming bases for activism rather than education.

The two ideologies universities follow the most. One is POWER, the other is MONEY. Ask any recently retired conserivative minded professor. Especially if white and male.

3:12 if you reduced the ridiculous amount they receive funding WILL be easier! More chance getting funding on mass if people know otnisnt going straight into one person's pocket. I would never invest 100,000k if the owner/ceo/chancellor was on a million dollar a year contract. I would think I'm just paying his ridiculous wage. And 100k isnt a small amount. Force them to take less or move on

They need to free up the fees funding the for students equipment. Laptops , cooking tools and industry equipment is super was super useful and especially in times like now. Where it’s more important to use your own tools. Great way to kick start a few local manufacturing jobs as well.

to be fair it is just demand and supply. And AU University earn a lot as it is run like a corporation. A CEO with a pay cut and do a lot of administrative/political work now and accepting a lesser pay - imagine you a staff accepting a lesser pay and double the headache... what will you choose?
Either way these Chancellors may do it to get some good will, or they may simply retire - these guys dont need money so you pay them more so that to them it looks like it is worth the trouble - so it's a tough decision.
It like an expert rich consultant and you using an emotional fallacy. I dont think it will fly. But depends how these people think if it is worth it to salvage the education industry of AU - as for one - the demand is significantly lower now because of the anti-china rhetoric. Any person will have a hard time brining back the revenue if the customers that can and willing to pay are out.
