    In my experience with the card, the normal fan curve is pretty damn bad, after changing a few settings in the bios, it actually runs pretty cool (for a card of this caliber), I think what happens with these cards (including yours and my 5970 and an old 4870) is that the memory overheats and dies, causing the artefacts that get progressively worse as it gets hotter.

    • @AtariBorn
      @AtariBorn 6 років тому +3

      The blower was effective if the fan actually broke 23% The reference 4870 I had would cook before speeding up the fan. Modded the BIOS to run at 35% at its slowest speed and the GPU stayed cool, only hit 50% occasionally, when under load. I quit giving it an opportunity to get overheated early on and that kept it from ever overheating.

    Cost me €480 new back in 2008. Xfire'd the thing with a third hd4870 gpu... back in the days when one could get a new top-tier AMD GPU for €200-250.
    Sold the set in 2010 to get the HD5970.

    I used to have a 4870 x2. I got it off eBay for under $100 back in 2011. The GPU would run hot when idle, then it was like a flamethrower when I would run a game.
    My computer became the most expensive heater in the house. Good times.

    Used the AMD Radeon 4870 X2 on one of my desktops for 11+ years, on average running for 12+ hours every day. Still works like a charm (mechanically), never had any trouble with it, even the dual fans still operate as well as they did on the day that I bought it. Under max load it hits 70C, maybe clean yours out ;) I do agree that it is the most beautifully designed GPU I ever bought

    590 is a monster. I was using that thing for 5 years before it finally started to feel its age and it had more to do with the amount of vram not cutting it vs. The raw power not being enough for 1080p. I bet it can still run modern games pretty decently with textures turned down.

    Thay all have the same problem. Me and two of my friends had one each and they got all fried like this when amd overdrive got disabled for them. It was somewhat of a driver fault because during the time they got burned fan control was disabled in the driver. One of my friends extended the life of the card with 100 percent fan speed using msi afterburner after the other 2 cards got burned. Eventually all 3 cards succumbed to the heat issue. They are now just expensive paperweights. They were good cards. What a shame.

      im using this card still. the card has been under heavy loads. Its honestly not a bad card, if you get a good one. It still allows me to play minecraft at 150 fps and fortnite at 30 on low. (Okay that sounds bad, but for a 10 yr old card, its not bad)

    • @samuelrs5138
      @samuelrs5138 4 роки тому

      I had a Sapphire 4870x2 and it did not have this issue at all so perhaps it was just limited to this brand? However it was still hot as hell and acted as a spaceheaterx2. The biggest problem with these things is that only very rarely would you have both chips at load during a game. Eventually with more modern games you'd have one chip maxed and the other would rarely spike above 10-20%. After a few years nothing took advantage of this architecture or perhaps it was that AMD simply ceased supporting it, even legacy drivers would not help.

    • @Middcore
      @Middcore 3 роки тому

      It looks like Asus (not sure about any others) actually made a model of the 4870x2 with a surprisingly modern-looking triple axial fan cooler design. I wonder if it holds up any better.

    I own a PowerColor 4870x2 in my retro PC and I probably have a thermal issue. The diagnostic led D5 (R323) goes to red after few minutes. It means GPU-1 isn't powered. Then after 15 minutes the video freeze and I can't go back to Windows after the reboot while it's hot. I opened the cooler system and cleaned it completely. I replaced the old thermal paste with a new one with a higer thermal quality. Fan is more quiet. But it doesn't fix. I updated the video card firmware with the latest one from the manufacturer, then now it displays glitches at the startup screen. To fix this new video glitches I have to rollback to a previous version firmware. I suspect a compatibilty issue with my motherboad's PCI-E. I never got similars problems with my previous motherboard, unfortunaty this one is dead. It cannot save BIOS setting whereas the lithium battery is new and fully charged. So to conclude, don't hesistate to load and try different firmware with your 4870x2 before trash it.

    Hey man I like your videos! I worked in a PC repair shop and got a PC with the same dual GPU card. The trick is to go to device manager within Windows and disable 1 of the 2 GPU’s which one it is you can’t really tell but you can get the card to a somewhat workable state!! If one of the GPU’s fails completely you can install a second GPU of the same generation and disable 1 of the 2 GPU’s that way. Hope you see this and hope this info at least helps you!

    I had one years ago that had the exact same errors. I remember I was performing a ton of diagnostics on it, and somehow came to the conclusion that the ram had been damaged by the heat. The graphic issues, at least from what I read, were from bad/damaged memory. I cleaned and resat the heat sinks with all the appropriate thermal paste and precautions, and couldn't get rid of those artifacts. I did a ton of research at the time, and found a forum with graphical artifacts that were cataloged. I guess that's when I matched up the issue with the root problem. It was awesome till then....especially when it came to playing crysis and some other new games at the time.

    I have a possible solution for those who own these cards that are still working:
    If you are handy with basic modification skills, you could add a heat wall that diagonally separates the two heatsinks from their shared airflow, thus creating 2 separate air channels from the intake, and allowing both to be cooled independently from the blower. This will also, incidentally, create a higher-pressure airflow for both sinks, which will be louder, but will produce a faster cooling-off rate of the fins.
    I actually came into possession of one such working model by Sapphire, and will attempt to make a simple modification that should help overcome the heating issue...that or I will end up fabricating a dual-chamber water-block for the damn thing and liquid cooling it like I do my twin R9 290X's.

    Great video I had or actually still have one of these cards and I never had any issues with working in games that I played on it. My card did do the same thing as this card but was easy to fix. Right by the power connectors there are some power chips or shunts whatever they are called. Anyways one of the small chips blew and the card would heat up like crazy and then crash or make a mess on the screen. My fix was to replace the burnt chip and it worked again and ran at 68-78c like always. It worked for 7 months then did it again I just replaced the card at this point as it turns out my Tagan 700 watt PSU was the culprit because other little strange things started happening in the system.
    I took it apart and a dam spider got itself fried and I mean fried inside the psu and it wrecked one of the 6 power stages which I fixed by replacing the part but that psu was put in another system and I never had any farther issues with it...it actually still works today. I never did fix the ATI card a second time but it is on display at my store with the rest of my gaming cards I got over the years behind glass in a case. It's surprising how many people just stop and stre at the old glory cards from the past and ask questions about them...lol

    ATI/amd learned after the 5990, the 6990 had a blower in the middle. The 7990 had a triple fan setup. The 295 had water cooling. Then they forgot everything again with the radeon pro duo and remembered again for the consumer market.

    I had two 4870x2 cards for four-way Crossfire. Contrary to popular opinion at the time, scaling was very good in nearly all games, including Crysis. The only real bottleneck was the 1GB of graphics memory, which prevented me from using 4xAA at 2560x1600 in Crysis.
    The GTX 295, incidentally, was no more than 10-15% faster in some situations.
    I ran those cards for quite a while, and never had any failures, and still have both in working condition. I only upgraded (to an absurdly expensive 5970 4GB card) due to the memory limitations, which I was increasingly running into with my larger-than-normal playing resolution.

    Timmy I’ve got two fully working 4870X2 identical to that one. You are welcome to borrow them if you want to attempt some crazy old school crossfire fun. Or frustration. Take your pick

    I still have this card as a museum part. I was one of the lucky where it didn't artifact.. However i put a 3th party cooler on it. Ran and still runs games however directX10.1 doesnt do well on new one's.

    these cards are beast ever, in my third gaming rig under dx10 im using two 4850x2 by Sapphire to run assetto in fhd maxed out @ stable 120 fps in quadfire ... the biggest problem is the high nuclear power consumption...

    Hey Timmy Joe, if you have a single 4870 then try 3 way crossfire, just make the single 4870 the display card, see if that works. You can also 3 way crossfire a 4870x2 with a 4850 or 4890.

    I've been running a Diamond Radeon 4870x2 in this Machine since 2008 and Have had really only one issue, that was of overheating in 2014 which I removed the cooler and re-thermal pasted it and it was working very well after this... I am as of 2020 Retiring this PC and all of its parts.
    The P5Q Pro Mobo
    The Core Two Duo E8400
    The Radeon 4870x2
    The TWO, FOUR GIGABYTE STICKS OF DDR2 (That people in 2008 called me crazy for using)
    and the Antech 1200 with 3 fans replaced and 1 currently dead.
    I will be saving the 2x 1gb Caviar Black drives and moving them into the newer machine we built my wife a few years back. to give that machine a total of 4TB of space.
    This 4870x2 has been running pretty much constantly since 2008 driving at first TWO Samsung T220 16x10 Monitors and then when those died it's been drving 2 Benq 24" 16x9 Monitors (in all cases by DVI)
    RIP Dimitri,

    I had one myself, and it actually cooked itself you are right. It also cooked my motherboard, leaving the red PC totally black all around the PCI slot. Card died much earlier than that board though... Double GPU cards.. Never again.

    This might be a wierd request, but have you tried baking each core on the graphics card "individually", using foil as a protective barrier?, just to say though, you'll need to verify its a gpu flaw and not a memory/vrm one. but all-in-all I'd say its worth a go, just don't touch the memory with the foil 'at-any-time' very important. You'll do well if the baking is done in a 100% accurate
    fashion on the graphics chip.

      I like the story on the chief @ "halo-combat-evolved" and as much as I have played it, I have realised I could use a directx 10 capable card to re-live those moments in real-time.
