New Outdoor Play Area: Testing Ways to let my Ferrets Play Outside

- I have been trying to find a new outdoor play area for the ferrets and testing ways to let them play outside.
I was a bit skeptical about this DIY Small Animal Playpen, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was pretty sturdy and the ferrets were not able to escape. It definitely works great for giving them a big space to run around and play. Although, I personally would NOT use this as a cage, and I would NEVER leave them outside unattended in something like this.

Thank you for sharing this. I got this today using your Amazon link. I have two ferrets that love being outside on leashes but I often feel bad because it's too hard to walk them both at once and sometimes I think it'd be nice for them to be able to be a little more free in their movement. Like being able to put tunnels out and stuff. I think this will be fun for some outside time. I'll definitely keep an eye on them because I also live in an area with too many animals that could hurt them and everything you said. I'm excited to sit out with them.

I use panels like the bottom ones for keeping my ferrets away from my old fashioned stereo. Mine have zip ties in the middle and my husband put rounded pvc pipe on the top. The bottom on the inside he put a piece of wood so it remains strong and sturdy. The sides he just put a screw through it to the wall. My ferrets ignore it. They have so many other spots to worry about lol. It’s been like that for two years. If I can find a way to fix all the wires better I would get rid of it. I love that your ferrets are having the time of their lives lol. You can get a berry net for like gardens to go across the top. It keeps birds out. Easy to throw it over it and take it down. If you are worried about the bottom coming apart just put two little screw holes in the middle on the ends of each panel and attach with a zip tie. Mine has the spots open for them. I couldn’t tell if yours does or not. I love this idea though.
Thank you for sharing how you have yours! I have heard there are ways to them more sturdy/safe. My ferrets love playing in it and I’m definitely open to finding ways to make it safer so I can leave it up and let them play more often.

Surely the plastic panels would be better above the wire panels, that way they can climb the wire, but tten have nowhere to go once they hit the plastic. As it is they could jump the plastic and then climb the wire.
That’s why the plastic panels are on the bottom and the wire is vertical so there’s not really an easy way for them to climb them. They have nothing to use to push or pull themselves up. Thankfully in the two years I have been using this none of them have ever been able to climb it. The bigger issue is them digging under the panels 🤦♀️ which they have absolutely tried to do 😆 but under no circumstances would I ever leave them alone in this pen. I live surrounded by woods and we for sure have birds of prey and then there’s the digging. I am always with them and when they start to dig to close to the edge I just move the pen over so the hole is no longer inside where they can get to it. (I fill in the holes and let the grass grow back 😆). I’m hoping to get a more permanent structure put up for them, but it gets ungodly hot/humid in the summer and freezing in the winter so we don’t use it all the time. Just when the weather is safe for them.

Where do you find the black bottom panels
I got them from Amazon, but I just looked it up and it looks like their sold out of the black panels…..again. I bought a set last year and then they sold out. I got another set in May of this year, but now it’s not showing the black panels as an option Hopefully they will bring them back soon. I attached a link to the brand I got, but there’s no option to buy the black panels 😞 .

How do you get just the plastic ones? Or did you get the one with both?
I got the mixed set. I just look to see if they sell just the plastic by themselves and for the ones I got they don’t offer just the plastic, but there are a few friends that make them, so you may be able to find just the panels you want.
