My high-school had a gun range. They discontinued the class about 20 years before I got there, but the range was still there, just being used as storage. Talking to my dad, who had gone through the same school, it was rated for .38 special but they just used .22lr. When I went through, they tried to start an archery team, but only 2 students were interested after finding out how regulated the sport was. Most of us wanted to use longbow or recurve and a handful who went bowhunting felt the regulation bows were too light, slow to react and poorly sighted.
The issue is Americans simultaneously fetishize and don't treat weapons with respect. Early training that weapons exist to protect your friends, family, and neighbors, are a privlage reserved for the responsible, and must be treated with great respect would work wonders.
Czech Republic, Germany traditionally have lots of weapons, and gun permits, and very low gun related crimes. Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war).
Germany it is nearly impossible for the average person to get a firearm and if they do there is a mountain of regulations, spot checks and all sorts of other inconvenience. The EU makes the rules via EU firearms directives. They will pressurise Czechia too in time as the grace period for relatively new EU members expires.
I would say that Austria is more like this than Germany. Czech Republic, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy (and I guess now Poland) are probably the most gun-friendly countries in Europe.
In the Netherlands you have to be an active member of a shooting club, not have a criminal record, fill in a form once a year to declare you're not suicidal or mentally ill and you have to have a gun safe to store the gun. Once a year, you get an unexpected visit from the police to check if your gun is stored in the way it's required by law.
We had air gun shooting in school in Sweden in the 1980s and sometimes we had the possibility to shoot with real guns at a range. No more, because guns are baaad now - except the guns that the criminals and the state have, of course.
This is complete nonsense and not correct, I have three children in schools (primary schoold and high school) and they never had such lessons. Neither had I. Maybe in some single school that takes part in some pilot programme. Quite disappointing to see such level of journalism at DW.
Is it not? The laser gun guy and the whole video sure implies it is. Or at least going to be, even if maybe this year not every school has the infrastructure yet.
Learning about guns isn't just about shooting but also disciplines, safety, responsibility, and self-restraint. Countries with high social cohesion mostly have mandatory conscription and non military national service for self-defence, either Singapore, some Nordics, Swiss, Israel, South Korea, Baltics and even UAE wants to implement it.
Without more knowledge on the lesson contents, I'd say - sadly - it's a good idea. So long as no militaristic procedures are drilled, like - I don't know, marching, saluting, mandatory nationalistic songs or oaths, and as long as the targets are abstract (not man-shaped, not associated with any particular country). Unfortunately, recent history has shown that a populace with some knowledge of armed conflict may be a good thing to have. I hope that for all of these kids it remains a sport.
From what I can tell, this syllabus aims to teach basic firearm handling and defensive shooting to students. It is not a sport but a preparation course for potential defense situations. It is the same logic as why I picked up combat school kenjutsu as a kid instead of the sport kendo.
I think they're real guns which have had part of the mechanism replaced with a laser simulator. This is done even in some military training. I think it would be good for them to at least experience shooting live ammo once but I can certainly understand why they would not want to do the bulk of the training with it.
"Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns; why should we let them have ideas?" - Joseph Stalin, former Prime Minister of the Soviet Union.
@jayjaymcfly7475 if you actually watched the video you would know that those are toy guns that shoot lazers. Worst that can happen is that they drop it on their toe and hurt it a little.
this is a good initiative so everybody gets acquainted with firearms for future defence of their countries. should be implemented all over European countries
Dude, you teach them safety so they don't have accidents and so they don't treat them as toys. Its not about giving children unlimited access. Its about common sense safety and preparedness.
Poland is nation who is known as punching bag of Europe Russia, Germany, austria and many other countries including Mongolia once harrassed them I cant blame for having mandatory gun traning and conscription and 5% gdp on defence. Poland and india should learn from israel on how to defend itself
Punching bag? Poles had an empire for hundreds of years. The true victims of constant aggression were the Balkan states, not Poland which rivalled with juggernauts like Sweden or the Ottoman Empire.
There are pros and cons to this, but with the limited context I have, it seems like the pros outweigh the cons. And you can't argue that it isn't a smart move for Poland to make. The simple fact of the matter is that they legitimately are at risk of being invaded in the near future. Familiarity with guns is something their citizens need to have. It's sad, but it's true.
In Germany, where at many schools 99% of schoolchildren are some musilm kids, I would not recommend firearms training 🎉 Could make Germany more unsafe as it already is. For Poland, where 99% of all schoolkids are ethnic polish, I would Not feel afraid teaching them how to use firearms🎉
Dear Poland, I totally understand the reasoning. But weapons usage and war is something for adults. My father was a long-time army member, I also served army duty time.I have three sons, my oldest son is an army officer. I don't take this suggestion lightly. We serve for our country, our families so they can enjoy a peaceful life. This training is contradicting this and the benefits are marginal.
I am rather upset that Russia has caused Poland to feel this is a necessity. I dont have a better solution currently, but I am not a fan of this excercise.
They wont do that in the UK because they dont want to make the kids too strong and independent because it might mean them losing political votes to a less Liberal party !
From UK, in 1970’s we had CCF, cadet force, still around today. In my school it was compulsory. It was great fun learning all military crafts, we used to shoot 303 Enfield and had a large armoury and shooting range. Nothing wrong in learning fire arms training. JMO.
learning gun safety in a responsible environment actually helps fight gun violence. the gunstore owners interview also shows that compared to the US, gun violence isn't a accessibility problem. in the end people forget that practicing gun sports is no different from bow arts and can have a completely non violent side to them.
This kind of lessons where always in polish shools. It's not a reaction to the situation in the world right now. Depending on the school, every class went to the shooting range at least once.
I hope they don't get too confident in about 50 years time because of this and make comparable mistakes Ukraine did. Playing with toys or even real gun is different from actual war. War is terrible and terrifying.
We used to have "defensive training" ("przysposobienie obronne") back in the day where one of the things we did was learning to shoot rifles (in my class we were using KBKS rifle, it was quite common even for actual soldiers to use this rifle for training). We went to a shooting range, got a box of ammo, a target and we practiced shooting. On this school subject we've been also learning about history and other stuff (i.e. how to use a gas mask). I had this like 23 years ago.
@marshmallowcello7528 oh, if it's self defence, then it all changes, doesn't it? Russia is not going to attack Poland in the near future, anyway. And Poland will not send troops to Ukraine. The whole nation does not want that and the Polish government recently confirmed it. There might be some volunteers in the foreign legion, but not regular troops. So again, Poland will not be used to fight in alien wars.
"Si vis pacem, para bellum." (If you want peace, prepare for war) Russia destroyed the notion of peace in Europe when it invaded Ukraine, plunging us back to the years before the World Wars.
Poland will be a huge barrier instead of a "speed bump" going forward, is what I see. I think it's a smart move. Also, unlike my country, I would hope that Poland actually has higher standards, similar to what Switzerland has in place.
There was once a time when every Englishman was obligated to train with the long bow. Many European countries saw school children at the shooting range. It is only in our modern world that we see teaching children to use arms as unusual. As if they will never need to stand up and be counted. There is a lesson there somewhere.
Ok I know people like to meme that Poland is little European Texas. But now I am starting to think Texas might just be little American Poland lol.
Why would Poland be compared to Texas??
Poland lives next to Russia, so that make sense...But Texas??

The dubbing is abysmal, this is not what these children are saying at all!
Then, what are they saying? Could you explain which parts of the video you mean?

My high-school had a gun range. They discontinued the class about 20 years before I got there, but the range was still there, just being used as storage.
Talking to my dad, who had gone through the same school, it was rated for .38 special but they just used .22lr.
When I went through, they tried to start an archery team, but only 2 students were interested after finding out how regulated the sport was. Most of us wanted to use longbow or recurve and a handful who went bowhunting felt the regulation bows were too light, slow to react and poorly sighted.
ethical hacking course should also be included
😂😂😂😂😂
I expect something like this to be somewhere in the United States. A US state where gun laws were relaxed and they teach these type of thing.
you don't have a maniac next to your door
USA have guns everywhere, they only need fear control therapy.
@@tatianavorobiova8015 in the US we don't have maniacs ? or you are saying that Putin is a maniac ?
The issue is Americans simultaneously fetishize and don't treat weapons with respect. Early training that weapons exist to protect your friends, family, and neighbors, are a privlage reserved for the responsible, and must be treated with great respect would work wonders.
@@leonardoorellano6652 Of course she means Putin.
@@kevfit4333 O know some gun owners in Germany having at home more than 200 firearms. 30 per one license.
@@kevfit4333 Also my friend, a female nurse she has 15 guns, and goes to shooting range every week, she is not professional at all.
I love Poland!
Schools in England used to teach rifle shooting.
Some in the USA as well.
Now ya'll can't even carry a knife.
We had air gun shooting in school in Sweden in the 1980s and sometimes we had the possibility to shoot with real guns at a range. No more, because guns are baaad now - except the guns that the criminals and the state have, of course.
I recall learning to run and take cover in school in Sweden around 1971.. Cold war
This is complete nonsense and not correct, I have three children in schools (primary schoold and high school) and they never had such lessons. Neither had I. Maybe in some single school that takes part in some pilot programme.
Quite disappointing to see such level of journalism at DW.
Title of a video and description suggest that its a nation wide thing but it's not.
Is it not? The laser gun guy and the whole video sure implies it is. Or at least going to be, even if maybe this year not every school has the infrastructure yet.
It's nation wide.
@Mysticaldarks mea culpa, it's in fact nation wide sice September.
But they won't be unprepared
From what I can tell, this syllabus aims to teach basic firearm handling and defensive shooting to students. It is not a sport but a preparation course for potential defense situations. It is the same logic as why I picked up combat school kenjutsu as a kid instead of the sport kendo.
Those are toy guns. Train them with real guns on the field so they can get use to recoil and noise.
I think they're real guns which have had part of the mechanism replaced with a laser simulator. This is done even in some military training. I think it would be good for them to at least experience shooting live ammo once but I can certainly understand why they would not want to do the bulk of the training with it.
US education minister will break up in tears when he sees this
Good idea, teach safe handling and usage to kids should be happening.
I'm 58 y/o.
We had this in secondary school in Bulgaria, back then.
With live ammo 😊
Good idea.
What a wonderful time to be alive sigh

People are applauding that children have gun training? I live in a world of sickos
Yeah this is horrible
If they are 18 and want to join the militairy thats fine but forcing them to train os absolutely sickening
No, it's common sense. And you're deluded.
This is a bad solution to a bad problem
@jayjaymcfly7475 of course it's normal under a supervision. And yes, you are deluded. Got it?
@jayjaymcfly7475 if you actually watched the video you would know that those are toy guns that shoot lazers. Worst that can happen is that they drop it on their toe and hurt it a little.
this is a good initiative so everybody gets acquainted with firearms for future defence of their countries. should be implemented all over European countries
Of the series better safe than sorry, considering the sort of neighbors they have.
Russia did it long time ago but back then DW said that Ru children are not enjoying it and parents are in shock!
The whole eastern bloc did this since the 40s, Poland included
I wish US kids' exposure to firearms in school was only for training!
They used to have these programs in the USA when boomers were little especially in the more rural parts of the country and didn't have pew pew issues.
Would be better with subtitles instead of voice overs.
we had a shooting team in school,1980-90s.the US doesn't do that anymore.
Too many lefties passing laws that violate the constitution. This used to be a normal part of US culture.
So, 80-year-olds are babbling, and teenagers will die for this...
A tale as old as civilization itself
Every country needs to stop playing the victim and stand up for their own safety, security, and freedom.
Kids are not mentally ready for guns! What the heck wrong with this country.
Kids are not mentally ready for war, yet ruZZia has brought war back to Europe
Dude, you teach them safety so they don't have accidents and so they don't treat them as toys. Its not about giving children unlimited access. Its about common sense safety and preparedness.
Poland is nation who is known as punching bag of Europe
Russia, Germany, austria and many other countries including Mongolia once harrassed them
I cant blame for having mandatory gun traning and conscription and 5% gdp on defence.
If you drew the geographic short straw of bordering Russia it's always just a matter of when, not if a war will begin.
The world teaches war not peace....2 Timothy 3

In Germany, where at many schools 99% of schoolchildren are some musilm kids, I would not recommend firearms training 🎉
Could make Germany more unsafe as it already is.
For Poland, where 99% of all schoolkids are ethnic polish, I would Not feel afraid teaching them how to use firearms🎉
😂😂😂
Cadet forces are a thing. I fired my first L98 years before I needed to shave.
A Free Society, needs to be an Armed Society. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Makes sense when you have Russia as a neighbor
Very American
Poland is not America
We aren't mature enough for this in the US.
This kind of lessons where always in polish shools. It's not a reaction to the situation in the world right now. Depending on the school, every class went to the shooting range at least once.
This is misinformation. Right now this is not part of school program in Poland. It was implemented in few schoolds only.
Meanwhile in Canada....
Based Poland! Love from USA.
I hope they don't get too confident in about 50 years time because of this and make comparable mistakes Ukraine did.
Playing with toys or even real gun is different from actual war. War is terrible and terrifying.
Freedom comes at a high price. Nowadays people are brats that take for granted what they got.
It's so much easier to teach good marksmanship to children than adults.
America - "We won't be the frontline of NATO against Russia, America first!"
Poland - "Fine - I'll do it myself."
No. Poland will not be used to fight for others in alien wars.
@xena2559alien? Russia literally borders Poland (Kaliningrad)
@marshmallowcello7528 so what? Is there a war in Poland? Why should Poland attack Russia? For what reason?
@xena2559 did I say attack? It's for self-defense against a POTENTIAL AGGRESSOR that lies and deceives under convenience any chance it gets.
Put peace first, and then security. 😢 This is the surest way to bring violence. Are there no educated people in charge there?!
"Si vis pacem, para bellum." (If you want peace, prepare for war)
Russia destroyed the notion of peace in Europe when it invaded Ukraine, plunging us back to the years before the World Wars.
Poland will be a huge barrier instead of a "speed bump" going forward, is what I see.
I think it's a smart move.
Also, unlike my country, I would hope that Poland actually has higher standards, similar to what Switzerland has in place.
I wonder what they could possibly be training children for ?
Perhaps, not to be victims of aggressive adults and nanny state bad actors.
Indoctrination
No, it's called being prepared.
Way to go Poland!
"Firearm lessons" yet the thumbnail has the boy not practicing trigger control which should be one of the first things you learn?
There was once a time when every Englishman was obligated to train with the long bow. Many European countries saw school children at the shooting range. It is only in our modern world that we see teaching children to use arms as unusual. As if they will never need to stand up and be counted. There is a lesson there somewhere.
Sooo ‼️only if Saddam Hussein mandates teaching how to use weapons in the schools then it’s wrong 🤣🤣🤣
I am glad to see that Poland is ready to protect Israeli interests with their lives
