- Every year, hundreds of people make the perilous journey out of North Korea as they escape from the "hermit kingdom".
But the number of defectors has been steadily dropping in recent years, as North Korean authorities have clamped down.
Ha Jin-woo, a defector who left in 2014, used to help other North Koreans escape. He explains how the route to freedom has become even more arduous.

It is actually creating more awareness. Think about it, if only 10 people escape out of 100, the other 90 get tortured by the North korean government to tell them everything about their plan etc.

The news should stop publishing the amount that have defected and the defectors should try to be low key so that others can escape
The only way to help the North Korean people is by speaking out about the regime. The world can't be silent anymore. People are starving every single day and no one does anything about it. Why won't the UN do anything for the NK people?

In fact China doesn't even acknowledge those seeking asylum from North Korea and China has become very powerful in the past few decades. There's 50% chance that even Russia might side with North korea so any aggression on North Korea would mean the beginning of world war 3. If you're talking about sanctions, then North korea would not be affected by any sanctions because it's an autarky. If you think you can somehow assissinate the dictator then even that is next to impossible because he has very very high security and all the people holding a gun around him are brainwashed ( literally brainwashed) and checked repeatedly if they show loyalty towards him or not. No one can do anything about the country even though almost all countries want to help people living in that country.

@@achyuththouta6957 China isn't communist, it's more capitalist than most countries (albeit with a strong protectionist streak). What China IS is coldly pragmatic. Like it or not, it's bad business to have North Korea as a neighbor. If the Kim Dynasty goes kaput, then Northeastern China is going to be swamped with North Korean refugees who would rather flee while they can rather than see what happens when the dust settles (very understandably).
Unfortunately, the parts of China that are right next door to NK, ergo where the majority of the refugees would go, are pretty impoverished as is, so that's eventually going to cause a lot of tensions in an already hyper-competitive job-market.
Meanwhile, if North Korea starts a war, it's also bad for business, since China would rather keep making money from the other nations, thank you very much.
Either way, China doesn't want the NK situation to have a drastic change that will end in war OR refugees fleeing to their side of the border, which means keeping the status quo as is (for now).

Imagine what great feeling it must be for North Koreans to enter the South Korean embassy and knowing that you are safe now.
It’s still hard for North Koreans to assimilate into South Korea. They have different accents. Different ways of life, etc. They basically are treated differently and need to be reprogrammed and unbrainwashed

The 1st clip still gives me chill everytime. So brave. I saw his interview a few yrs ago. He seemed still not able to adapt into S.K and there are still lots of discrimination. I hope there are more opportunities and more mental help and others for these defectors. They have been through so much.

My heart dropped when he said that old people and children often drowned in the river and they had to watch them die, unable to help... It's so heartbreaking. To make that last leap to the better future, go through so much pain and fear and eventually fail when you took the risk and were so close... So sad. I can't find the right words but just imagining the feelings of those who passed on the way or were captured makes me horrified. I hope that North Korean people get justice during my lifetime.

I still remember that North Korean soldier making his daring desperate escape across the border, 1st driving as fast as he can as his fellow soldiers scramble to go after him, he drives as close as he could get then having to jump out and make a last mad dash on foot with a hail of bullets all aimed at him! I’ve never seen anything like! Then to watch him collapse on the other side and be dragged to safety by waiting soldiers and hoping he survives. Just crazy! He had intestinal worms, malnourished, bullets in him, really bad shape but survived.

Hii I have a few questions! Basically I've heard that many N. Koreans prefer escaping to the western countries rather than S. Korea, and the reason is that they face discrimination by S. Koreans. Is this true? If it's true, is it discrimination by just SK people or the goverment as well? And lastly, why do they get discriminated? I'm very curious about the answers. Thank you in advance
@@ranmeh9936 Actually, they face discrimination from some citizens. The goverment even provide them a house rent free for 5 years. They also educate them about stuff that doesn't exist in NK such as TV, Internet, bus and so on. SK is really warm towards them, but yeah some people think they are ignorant, poor, uneducated, or spies from NK, stuff like that...

I met a guy a few years back and he told me people were starving so much they were in the city parks eating leaves off the trees to survive. Heartbreaking
That's more than heartbreaking. It's outrageous.
That's not even the half of it, during the worse years of the 80s and 90s North Korea was in big trouble, their finances collapsed and the nation was in tatters. Food was so scarce that people turned to cannibalism, eating family, neighbours, anything, people were picking bugs out of the ground basically doing anything they could to eat.

North Korea is a reminder to me that when you lose your freedoms that it is a long, hard, dangerous road to get them back if at all. Don't give up any freedoms without a fight because this is where it ultimately ends up once you start down that road.

The fact you are reporting this, limits the possibility of future defectors’ s livelihood
why focus on the negatives? the fact that they are reporting these means more sympathizers can join in and help these defectors instead and thus opening up more escape plans or routes for them. Do not dwell too much in darkness.

Those are old routes, and if you succeed you're stuck in china for years, they probably mostly don't take those routes anymore.
+ i don't doubt a lot of defectors have news and contact from people there to say what's happening.
I don't think the nk gov will talk about defectors on the news, but they probably have contacts saying "oh the border is full of military men".
The defectors kinda all took this route, im not surprised if they talked about how they defected and how its the same.
Of course it will be harder. Every strategies of defectors have been publicized. NK knows everything now. NK will not just sit and watch like watching a movie, will it?
If there's one thing Kim underestimates all the time, it's human creativity.
Bruh, these methods are the most logical and feasible ways to escape the country. Do you seriously think North Korean government never thought of these and are googling "how to catch defectors"?
NK already knew all of this. It simply allows some people to escape, because it would be too expensive to shut the border down fully.
Letting some people out is also a good safety valve. Inevitably those who escape will be those most creative, bravest and most dissatisfied with the regime - prime material for internal rebellions, in other words. Let a few leave and you've starved the would-be rebels of their finest, who instead risk life and limb to starve the potential of any rebellion a little more.
The sad thing is that it works in China's favor for NK to exist.
If SK had their democratic freedom and the military of NK it would be a serious danger to China right on its doorstep like that.
@@McHrozni They risk life and limb for freedom - it's easy for you to mock that from the safety of your own home in a free country when you never had to pay for that with your own skin.
Their responsibility is to themselves - the concept of patriotism in an overdone western concept, more so than anywhere else in the US.
That same patriotism becomes fanaticism under the likes of the Kim regime, that is precisely why they have no choice but to run - because being so much as suspected of dissenting against the govmt will get you a prime spot in an internment camp.

They dont learn how people escape from these documentaries they learned from those who got caught anything that is released is old info.
Makes me wonder why on Earth is the world tiptoeing in that direction.
It's a way more precarious situation than a lot of people realize. I can't speak for everyone else out there (nor do I claim to be an expert), but here in the U.S. a lot citizens say that we should just invade the DPRK and depose the government. But those same people don't understand how dangerous that would be for both sides. For example, if the North Korean borders were breached, many (if not all) of the people currently being held in their internment camps would be killed immediately to preserve resources and food.
There's also the issue of China not wanting an influx of North Korean refugees crossing their borders to escape the chaos. On top of the DPRK being a "buffer zone" to keep U.S./European influence away from Chinese borders. Basically, there's many ways that trying to handle the situation can go wrong and very few ways that it can go right.

@@Akakaze22 Even with all of the talks surrounding unity, the money that SK would need to modernise and stabilise NK would bankrupt the whole economy. And it’s not a short process, either. Bringing NK to SK level today would take decades.
Watching this I’m incredibly grateful that I live in a safe country and it’s a shame that there are people in my country who complain for what the government does but they don’t realise how much worse it could be

Absolutely. The British government are absolute crap when it comes to the working class and cost of living and I for one am feeling it, that being said we still have our freedoms, access to good healthcare, free education, freedom of speech, able to leave the country whenever we please. Well the border in south and north are way heavyly guarded because each country is checking on each other. Passing through the border of NK and SK is basically passing through a military camp.
The NK SK border, is one of the most dangerous zones on earth. Escaping that route is nearly impossible.

I cried so hard. As a south korean myself living comfortably in New York, I felt so heart broken over the fact that someone from my half of the country must go through this to may of may not be able to cross a small border and eat what I have for 12 bucks or sleep on a bed like mine.

Probably the longest comment I've written - Having to risk your own life for freedom. Knowing, generations of your family are going to be punished. Probably one the hardest things to do. This is the year 2021 and there are still so many atrocities taking place. The poor, starving North Korean people deserve freedom, and some much more. I feel so very passionate about this. I feel genuinely sorry for these people. They will come in peace and just want to be helped away from alone of misery. Lots say this but I feel their flee is genuine
A part of my family came from the border town Tumen right across North Korea. The river is shallow that most defectors cross from there, but Chinese have been constructing tall fences and cutting down dense trees on their side to remove any hiding spots. This was in 2019 summer and I assume that it may have been worse by now
When you catch yourself thinking it’s been a hard year. Then remember even when I feel trapped, the truth is I have real freedom.
It’s really sad how people have to live in such fear and freedom, that they aren’t happy with where they live.

You got a point. Some have humility and decide to "walk" on occasions that doesn't place them in an interrogation room with officials.
The problem isn't usually the policemen, it's regular civilian informers who get paid a pretty penny to find and out defectors. Once an informer makes the call, the police have to respond to it
