P-3 A, B, C FE. VP-19, VP-47, VP-30. That old girl took me all around the planet. Great reliable airplane! Many adventures! I was outside working on my truck last week and I heard those engines. Then I saw it on approach to NAS JAX. Nice to see her still working!
Thank you for this video; the sounds, especially the entire taxiing part, evoked a real sense of nostalgia in me. I was stationed on Misawa Air Base, Japan '84-'87, and the sound of the P-3s was background noise I heard so often. I was part of the Naval Security Group, and between the Naval Air folks and us, we kept close watch on the Soviet Navy. I miss those times, such a great experience. The Japanese were wonderful to know.
Flew P-3 A,B,C,&D'Souza from 1968 thur 1988. Have a lot of great memories and stories. I did tours VP 22, 31, 17, 44, also did a tour in P5M2 (seaplanes) with VP48. Hi to all I served with, that are still with us. GO NAVY!!!!
……are its’ props’ same type as powered Lockheed Electra L188 commercial airliner? I loved flying on it. Here it had same flight duration as Boeing 727 inter-capital cities’. Wonderful aircraft!
P3's were equipped with Hamilton Standard propellers. Electra II's were equipped with Airmotive Products propellers which are the square tipped versions.
@@fleetwoodpup8328 ……thank you for that info. There’s an Electra Start up video on YT, duration 9m15s filmed in 2008. I love watching/hearing such a magnificent piece of engineering!
Cool video, that’s a sound we won’t hear much anymore. I was an AX in VP-23 from 72-75. They were good times but it wasn’t for me. Funny thing less than 10 years after I got I bought and learned to fly a small plane.
You ever time the mighty Orion took to the air, a Soviet submarine commander crapped his shorts!!!! Absolutely beautiful sound! Four mighty Allison T56-A-14 and Hamilton Standard propellers!!! Great memories!!!!!
Used to see the flying on patrols with 3 engines. Sea of Japan, phillipine sea and western Pacific. 76 we lost a man overboard during a Typhoon. P3s showed up during rescue ops. Never found him..
Yes, both Allison T56 turboprops......They are configured a little differently from the intake and oil cooler location perspective but same powerplants........
What is the long point on the tail for? One of these planes flies over my work from time to time and the tail sparked curiosity to what it was. I see other planes like the c130 and c17 and they dont have that.
It’s called the MAD boom it’s an acronym for Magnetic Anomaly Detector, it detects anomaly in the surface of the water for anything metallic like a hull of underwater subs. The P3 also releases a dozen of sonobuoys, a device that floats on water with a underwater microphone, which the operator on board the Orion listen’s for the tell tale noise of any subs it’s tracking.
Flew P-3's for several years with VP-16 and then VP-62 out of NAS Jax. Both terrible squadrons but that was the 90's. Nice to see the venerable "War Pig" has finally been replaced with the P-8, could have used that 25 years ago...
Its too bad that almost none of these great old birds are not in service anymore due to the P-8 Poseidon and I don't like that jet at all because its a copy of our most widely used 737 airliners all over the entire world today and we are lucky to have only a few flying around on airshows yearly.

Having grown up near NAS Moffett Field that engine howl is a very comforting sound.
The sound at startup and intial taxi, brings back viseral memories. Thanks, I love it.
What a beauty!! Nothing beats those prop birds when it comes to looks, not to mention the sound of those engines!!
Awesome.. we still fly the P3K Orion (upgraded P3B) here in NZ in 2022...thanks👍🇳🇿
The background "music" of my childhood, NAS Brunswick, Maine.
This is VP-30 "Pro's Nest", NAS Jacksonville, Florida.
wynder15 I knew that’s where the squadron was based I live there

Best anti-sub plane ever built!!!!!!..Thanks for sharing this video!!!!
Thank you sir, most kind! Check out my Airshow Photography & Video Facebook page when you have time, there's a lot more material that you may like.

Best Job I ever had or loved, flying in the P-3's.
I spent a lot of time in that very aircraft as a MC/TACCO. It's from VP-16 War Eagles in Jax.
85 to 89, loved it
I miss hearing those fly over all day. My dad still flies them!

Beautiful 😍
No tail number! Must be an East coast thing...On the West coast we had the Bureau numbers on the tail...159329 was my favorite Bomber! Laging Honda!
Number two is selected. Button. Light. Air drop. Rotation. Fuel flow. Button. Normal start number two. Excuse me while I go get my cup O' noodles.

something about that sound of the engines, cant get too much..
VP65
Willow grove Airstation, Pennsylvania stationed, still in Aviation Unit Army Reserves, loved that P-3 power.
Just curious as to why they kept #1 engine off while taxing? I was with Patron 93 in the late 80's.
The start of this video could have been right out of the 1960's or 70's with that F-4 Phantom in the background.
Amazing
Friggin P-8 could not find a sub floating on the surface!
My absolutt favorit plane wow i like the P3 Orion. when it first came too Norway i 1969 , iwatch and loved :)

Do the Orion's and the Hercules use the same powerplants?

@@justinb2916 Awesome I have seen both fly overhead and That purr sounded familiar.
@@vinniemoreno704 The C-130 always had a heavier sound than the P-3 to me. But I might be biased...3,600 hrs (26 years) in the P-3.
Is the transition to the P -8 complete?

It detects deflections in the Earth's magnetic lines as made by large metal objects, like near surface submarines.

Thanks. It is a refurbished/rebuilt Lockheed Electra.
Only the original YP-3 prototype. All production P-3s were new build air frames that were modified from the Electra design.
Good 'ole Dirty Thirty!

Is the Orion a copy of the Electra or different does somone know
Orion is shortened Electra fuselage with stronger wings, increased fuel capacity, more horsepower, etc, etc.
The shrill of the T-56's puts me write to sleep !
