I learned something a few months ago about wet gloves. A mother whose children loved playing outdoors in the snow was perplexed because their gloves would get so wet and cold. Her solution was the "Nitrile" rubber gloves. Her children would put their wool gloves on, then she would put the rubber gloves on them over the wool gloves. In that manner, the wool gloves remained dry and her children's hands were insulated better from the cold. You might try something like that when you overnight in the winter. Put a few pairs of the rubber gloves in your backpack and carry them with you in wintertime. They take up little room and weigh hardly anything!

For your first time on snowshoes, you are doing well. I snow-shoed all over the Olympic Mountains (Western Washington State, USA) after I got out of the military in 1972. I loved it. Not many people went out in the winter back then! Days upon days in silence; or only the music of the wind in the trees. Lovely. I'm 68 years old now; can't do much snow shoeing, but I still have them. Your modern ones probably weigh 1 tenth the weight of mine. I still live here in West WA, and still spend all 4 seasons outdoors; but mostly only day trips or 2 days at the most. Time catches up with all of us. I quite enjoy your videos Vanessa. And in all these years in the outdoors; I never happened upon such a lovely young woman as you in the woods! The times change; and that is good. The now is for the young.

You did very well in your snow shelter. The candles you used are very well worth their weight in gold. Who cares if it is nice looking or if it fits with the surrounding decor of the forest or snow. They serve a need and you had a great need. Always love coming back and watching your older videos. Each time I see something I missed the last time. In all you attempt to accomplish you are amazing. Ich Liebe Dich...

One of the things that I really enjoy about your videos is that you don't edit out the difficulties you encounter. Instead, you show us how you manage the difficulties. This makes the video more realistic and believable for us, and we might even learn a thing or two. Thanks Vanessa!

I did snow survival in the scouts as a boy and again in the military for cold weather mountain war fair training , The cold can be a real killer, but a few simple tricks can be a real life saver. The number 1 is to stay dry, Keep your body temperature stable and warm.the extremities are the most vulnerable to frost bite. You need them to survive. Planning is key to turning a miserable situation into a pleasant event. One lit candle can raise the temp in small space like pup tent about 10 degrees, not much but better than nothing.

I agree with Marks. The dampness in cold weather is very difficult and uncomfortable. You did a very good job of making a camp in these conditions especially with a snow shelter and without making a fire. This looked like a lot of work but you showed that it is possible to do. Candles can produce a surprising amount of heat in small spaces. This was a very creative solution for light and added heat as well. I hope that you stayed dry and as warm as possible.

In canada we build igloo shelters all the time...
Use 8-10 bent saplings to make a dome shape. Cover with a tarp & pile approx 6"-8" thick with packed snow >>>& small spruce branch ends

I very much love to watch these channels evolve. The polish that always seems to follow the nearly same learning curve. It find it interesting to see how the women's channels become more socially interesting and the men's become more danger related interesting. As far as knowledge sharing and information provided they are similar.
I still find your videos to be the most interesting. Maybe because of your cute accent and the fact that one side of my family came from Germany. As always best wishes for success and and safety!!

A good tip as a few other people have mentioned to stay warm is a hot water bottle. I personally use a 1 liter Nalgene bottle fill it with boiling water screw lid on tight toss it in the bottom of your sleeping bag a little while before you get in it for the night and you will have toasty warm feet all night long. Have used this method on many many frozen nights and never once had a leak just make sure its a Nalgene and not a cheap imitation!

In the case that you don’t know, the beauty of your videos, in my opinion, is your absolute honesty and modesty in presenting situations that aren’t always a complete “success”. That is a presentation of the reality of making your way in the backcountry: the essential need for the ability to learn and improvise also known as creativity😁BTW, sorry for the worst situation: wet and cold! One or the other, okay; but not both😬

Snowshoeing is useful sometimes, other times skiing is better, looks like this time, snowshoeing was better. Very good pocketwarmer. Those damp conditions like that are the worst, If it's colder but dry it's much better, hope you are able to sleep, Vanessa? Mmmmmmmm, the Ox Tail Soup looked delicious! Those Lanterns look really nice, they made your shelter cozy looking, looked like your homemade structure worked out alright. Your English is really quite cute! Looking forward to Part 2, Thank you for sharing, Vanessa.

I agree with you......the worse part of snow camping is the cleanup and dry out after the adventure is over. You also have to hope that temperatures don't drop too much and everything is frozen solid in the morn. Been there.....it's not fun.....LOL. With cold weather camping, we go heavy on carbs (pasta) and protein (sausage) for the boys. We generate heat from within the body. You get a "ATTA GIRL" for this adventure. This was a tough one! As I have said before "For all Seasons!" Please take better care of your hands. I like a neoprene type glove for that type of weather and a few chemical hand warmers helps also. Good video! Thank you! Stay well and get your rest.

If your lighter is fueled by butane, that is why it would not work. Butane will not vaporize at low temperatures. Warm it up and you will have a better chance to light. This is why I traded my light butane stove for a Svea 123 years ago.

Isopropane or isobutane will work. Better it is to stay comfortable at home.I had that experience, and yeah, it sucks when all your modern things FAILED.

Yep .. the Svea 123 absolutely ROCKS 👍. I have an Optimus 8R Hunter (same burner mechanism as the 123) .. bought it 40+ years ago and still going strong 😊. A Svea is on my 'wish list' .. but I have to find a way to get it past the 'local government' 😊😊😊.

Only the "BIC" brand butane lighters are relatively reliable. The knock offs are total junk. Keep your butane lighter in a pocket next to your body. Always have a ferro rod as a backup.

    • @johndoogan3712
      @johndoogan3712 4 роки тому

A Zippo lighter comes with a lifetime guarantee, they say if it ever fails to work, we fix it for free. I read an article whereby one was recovered from the belly of a fish (Northern pike in the US) the unfortunate owner lost it at a boat jetty when its flashes attracted the fish. After the lighter was recovered, it sparked up.
I have owned an Optimus 80 camp stove for over 40 years, I bought it as a bargain buy which the shop couldn't sell owing to a missing pot support. Once I made its replacement from piece of sheet steel, it worked fine. I later bought a mini pump which totally transformed start ups, an operation requiring great care to avoid spectacular flare ups.
Sadly, many of these stoves suffered outer case corrosion although some MOD surplus # 7 gasoline stove cases came onto the market on eBay giving these stoves another lease of life. I bought one of these cases after buying a second Optimus 80 minus its case.
I do recommend looking at the Classic camp stoves website (Spiritburner) and consider joining as there's a wealth of information on there including a guy on there who's done some amazing repairs. Peace, if in doubt, brew up.

Hi Vanessa, this is a proper cold camp,it can be miserable with the rain hanging around,if it is only snowing,it is a lot easier.
We will see how warm you can get in this arrangement,it should be okay.
Would have been nice to see you construct an igloo, maybe another day when the rain stays away👍
    See you in part two😊

Oh my goodness, your hands look so cold especially with the bad cut on your hand. I worked outside all my life and know what that feels like. This tour was a lot of work. We certainly appreciate everything you do. Hopefully you will like the "shoes". I find them more enjoyable than my skis but the wet snow like that makes them heavy to wear. Shoes on deep powder snow on a clear night under the stars is so peaceful. I hope you slept well after all the preparation. We look forward to part 2.

WOW! Tough lady you are Vanessa, no fire😣 Very beautiful there, so much snow. Hope you didn't get too cold, hard to warm up without fire. Oxtail soup looked good. Lot's of hard work you did in this video, very determined woman. Put that lighter against your skin under the coat for a minute or two so the butane will expand and light for you. Good luck in part two, I'm waiting Wild Woman. Enjoy!

Wow - I am in awe! That looks miserable and when you described the pain in your hands, I remembered hanging wet clean clothes on the line back in Minnesota in the wintertime. Horrible job! The fact that you posted this tells us that you survived, but oh my! What a job. Still, it's beautiful and your little shelter does look sort of comfy. Great video - you made both the beauty and the discomfort very clear.

I hope the sleeping bag did its job well, and I (we!) will be looking forward to seeing part two.
Even in an igloo or snow cave, and pretty much any enclosed area, a single candle or oil lamp can raise the temperature quite a bit. I carried a collapsing candle lantern like yours for many years. In the 18th and 19th centuries there was an oil lamp called in the American Colonies a "Betty Lamp" if I recall. It was an open design much like the Eskimo kudalik (sp? -- KOO-duh-lick)). The Eskimo lamp used fat (whale, walrus, etc) that melted just enough from the flame's heat to supply the oil to keep it burning, while the Betty used oil from rendered fat. Either one probably put out as much heat as your candle lantern if not less. Many hunters and trappers mentioned in their writings how one of these simple lamps would raise the temperature in their hunting camp shelter more than they would have expected. This would have been something like your overnight shelter using an oilskin tarp, an igloo or snow cave, unless they were "packing heavy" and had a tent. I hope the two lanterns added a bit of warmth for you.

Nicely done little lady, a few things though next time make sure your sleeping arrangement is higher of the ground, so you create a cold tunnel, and what i always bring is a can with bear crease and a wick ( your heater) i let that burn throughout the whole night, it helps a lot, and make a melt channel for the snow that will melt so it can run away on the outside and inside

Rain and snow! Here we get over 110" of rain a year. And the snow in the Olympic Mountains can be many feet deep. Watching this camp with you reminds me of many of them back in the 1970s and 1980s. In the Olympic Mountains we had many huge mature fir and hemlock trees. We would burrow down through the snow to the base of the trees. There you would find an area that you could pitch camp and tent and be dry and warm. But when you hiked out the next day, you needed a large covered area to hang out and dry all of your gear. I think that you are going to need a large covered area tomorrow for your gear!

That's quite the little snow castle that you have there Vanessa! You've worked hard to get it to that point and assuredly so, that it drove your food apetite way up there! This ordeal with the cold hands could be remedied by using cotton work gloves inside of latex dishwashing gloves and that dear could help keep your hands dry and much more warmer! When us older kids were young, i can remember doing this and it worked fairly well, especially when handling snow! Latex gloves however are not puncher-proof with handling of tree branches and anything else that has sharp edges. An outer glove that would work better would be the use of the thicker black chemical handling gloves that are rated at 9 mill thickness over the lightweight brown cotton work gloves! These gloves that i speak of are bought in bulk packaging ie: 5 pr. of brown cotton work gloves@ $4.00+/-, 50 pr. of Powder-Free Nitrile Gloves@ $12.99 here in the states from Harbor Freight Stores. I do know that cold hands can be very painful! Gloves of these sorts can be very useful around the farm work too, when trying to tend to the animals!

Hi Vanessa 🙋 .. another great adventure from you .. thanks 👍. Somewhat challenging this one though .. wet cold 🐧☔ .. hmmm ...
Some good points and tips raised by other subscribers. Butane lighters .. gotta keep em warm up against the bod or .. 😕. Forgot the Zippo? Bad girl 😡 .. 😊😊😊. A fire steel or matches lights up Benzine fine .. easy peas 😊.
That soup looked delicious .. Yumm.. I use a 0.6 litre 46N Thermal Cover over my Thermos Flask together with a cut off piece of 'Aluminised' sitting pad wrapped around the Flask inside. Very light, cheap and keeps the soup / tea hot for much longer. Also attaches easily to various points on the Pack / Belt / whatever.
Until Part 2 'lekker slaap' (sleep well 😊) .. please take care.
