Acres of clay home stead a family farm you tube channel give a nice review of your channel yesterday on there channel hope you get the pink eye under control it can spread really fast as you know
congrats kayla and jason on your youtube chanel,im in australia,i like to watch your working days ,especially with the hay production , i am a sheep man but all your content is interesting, thumbs up
I noticed if the darts ever get hot the plastic piece on the end that keeps them from coming out of the calf turns soft and comes off then they just fly out of the calf without the medicine going all in
Been using the dart gun for this for years, if your draxxin or w/e your using doesn’t completely fill the darts you should top them off with sterile water & also coat the tip of dart with petroleum jelly
Yes, I keep notes on my phone - I use a Google Sheets Document - it has all the cow tags wrote down. With Birthdays / Calving Dates, and , notes etc - - we can look back at any time regardless where we are, if we’re in open pasture doctoring or at the new chutes giving annual vaccinations. - I’ll the to share on this soon!!
We just borrow my in-laws! Lol 😆 it’s on my “wish list” ... so with Pink Eye it’s caused generally by flies! Or something (like a seed) getting into the cow or calves eyes causing an infection ... Flies are the worst part of Hot Muggy weather. It’s their breeding ground it seems ... and we’ve had a lot of it wet weather this year ... we treated them with an antibiotic to prevent the further spread throughout the herd and possible eye damage (blindness) to the cows and calves.
Absolutely... especially since we don’t have a head chute set up at the creek farm where we rotate the girls on ... it’s been a lot of trips back and forth 😂
We generally jus try to walk behind & watch for it to disperse the antibiotic- once it’s shifted weight the dart falls out. We retrieve and dispose of accordingly
Nice video. I had a question about the darts--you said they fall off. So are you ever worried that one could get stepped on and cause a problem or even worse, swallowed or something like that? Liking the channel!
Never a dumb question. It’s how we learn!!!! We learn so much by watching others. They’re good. The bad. The indifferent. It all us a lesson if we have an open mindset to it 🙂🙂 huge reason behind this channel. To share our story.
We haven’t ... it’s something we’ve tossed around - @brent - do you buy in bulk? And did you have to worry about the cows slacking off on their mineral intake?
@@ChroniclesofKayla I have bought the garlic in bulk from feed mill.. I used 2 cups of garlic in a 50lb bag of mineral.. best is in block salt.. cows usally always will lick a block salt..
Where you guys can get pretty close to your cattle I don't understand why you don't just dose there whole backs with pour-on lice tick and fly treatment it would help keep the pink eye & flies down those tags aren't much good if not on the cattle's ear.
not fun hope your keeping track who getting dart dont know if double dose is cool, might want to look into a used shoot and put trailer wheels on it so can bring out to heard set up holding pen with cattle panels and mark and record tag whos been vacinated
Yes! I was keeping track of which cow and calf tags he was giving the antibiotics too - we’ve been working towards having a secondary setup at the Creek Farm. All just takes time - we’ve been also trying to find a portable corral setup ... all a work in progress as they say! Thanks for watching.
Portable corrals are awesome! Express them first hand. Couple of my cousins have them and we use them as well when I worked with my renter. Farm companies are pretty proud of the priceRight now.

Seems like there is a lot of Pink Eye in the herds this year. This farm wife has had the same thing with the pink eye
I noticed if the darts ever get hot the plastic piece on the end that keeps them from coming out of the calf turns soft and comes off then they just fly out of the calf without the medicine going all in

I will definitely keep that in mind & share that with Jason.
Looking good be safe
How do you know which cows have been treated and how do you make sure you don’t miss one for treatment?
Do you mark them somehow?

I never put ear tags in with out using a headgate ours were to wild...to handle by hand
Ha! We have a Honda pioneer too! Love it! So how do the cows get pink eye??

@@ChroniclesofKayla ohhh ok, that makes sense! The shot gun looked much more convenient that rounding everyone into a chute!
Absolutely... especially since we don’t have a head chute set up at the creek farm where we rotate the girls on ... it’s been a lot of trips back and forth 😂
We have a Pioneer too 😊
I used oil ropes in front of the watering tank
neat to see the dart gun in use. How do the darts fall out? How do you find them when they do?
There’s a gel collar half way down the needle that’s dissolves and then falls out
We generally jus try to walk behind & watch for it to disperse the antibiotic- once it’s shifted weight the dart falls out. We retrieve and dispose of accordingly
What is the name of the dart gun you use? Need to treat my calf asap!
It’s a PneuDart!
tried a dart gun on the Bison, that family group won't let you get close to them now, THEY REMEMBER!!!
Oh man ... ours still love us. Lol 😆
Nice video. I had a question about the darts--you said they fall off. So are you ever worried that one could get stepped on and cause a problem or even worse, swallowed or something like that? Liking the channel!
Hi! Yes so they “fall” out - we stayed with in the herd to collect them! Thanks so much for watching!

have you ever tried garlic in minerals or salt for fly control? I've been doing it for two year and works awesome
I’ve just started using it about 2 weeks ago. I’ve got a neighbor that swears by it.
