Big sports bike man for years and decided to try a different type of riding. After watching 1000's of YT reviews of different entry level bikes I settled for the 500X. After over 2 years I know I made the right choice. So easy to ride and really helped me learn some off road skills. I'm a 70% on road and 30% off road rider and this bike is perfect for that. I bought a 2020 model new and she's still in very good condition despite my initial clumsiness on dirt.
Good to hear. I'm picking up a used '22 in another state next month. Very low mileage from a guy who's responsible and deep into dirt riding (and is getting an Africa Twin to add to his stable. I feel lucky -- you can't find these used anymore, esp. late-model.
The "Halfrica-twin" is a phenomenal bike. Leave the ego of the big bikes at the door (unless you pack a ton of gear, ride two up, or are just a stud rider) that 500 will do everything the average rider needs, if your under 6' tall in the market for a mid size adv bike the cb500x is definitely worth a hard look, as a KLR owner if I had to choose between the two I'd pick the Honda, its not as top heavy or tall as the KLR.
I figure I’d chime in. I’m a hair under 6’3” and the stock cb500x was horribly uncomfortable for me. Back and knee pain even from short rides (I’m 30 years old). However I had a stock 2015 but then I got lucky and found a Rally Raid kitted 2014 CB500X that had the shinko tires “creating a taller stance” I added bar risers, and knight designs lowered foot pegs and it fits me like a glove now and is incredibly comfortable. Great bike, and I almost always carry motocamping gear and a passenger.
Great video and a Good very good review of the bike. I have a 2015 cb500x with rally raid suspension on it. Upgrading the suspension as I have one of the best things I did for the bike. It is definitely now, the half African twin. I put all the gadgets on it for protection and I take my bike off road all the time it's an easy maneuverable bike. It's happy off-road and on-road. And if you happen to drop it it's really easy to pick up compared to the bigger bikes it's still heavy but it's easier. and it definitely has a great mileage with a bigger tank. And it really just sips the gas and with the gas prices that we're seeing today that's a very good thing. And I also have the 705s on my bike as well. I raised the fender on my bike by putting metal spacers and longer bolts so the tire fit better. I also installed the ABS shut off switch.
I wanted say great video, an honest review. I have own a 2015 and have really enjoyed the bike so much I have kept it. It’s a beast on gravel a lot of fun. We two up from north Georgia to FL and camp monthly during the summer in the mountains. We had many large bikes just like you. I have hard and soft luggage. @@alsacs3635 That’s a good question, it does well. I read where these guys go to the 16 tooth front sprocket, to lower RPMs. Then 6 gear becomes to long legged. The parallel twin runs well at a higher RPM than a single or a V Twin. So cruising at 5500 RPMs the engine is working well and not stressed. I am very glad that Honda heard the rider's voice and upgraded the suspension from the 22 models. I bought my at the end of the last year so I am very excited to go for a ride as the weather makes it possible.
I picked up a 2016 with RR suspension a couple months ago. I agree with everything you covered. My biggest gripe is the stupid shift lever being so tight inboard. Really hard to shift while standing and wearing off road boots. I wish RR would get their wheelsets back in stock.
At 75 I’ve been looking at this to replace my 2015 Goldwing that I use for everything transportation. The plethora off accessories mean I can fit it with bags, grip warmers, lights and crash bars so I won’t be giving up much ability beyond pulling a trailer and rain protection. I’ve pretty much stopped doing big miles and the thrifty gas mileage is a big bonus.
will be a shock; in power, comfort. but its great, light and ez to handle. i'm a young 71, and my bmw 750GS is really to top heavy for me if it goes down. Its's 25kg heavier. great thru heavy city traffic . U an also consider the nc750x dct but heavier, a bit smaller tank.
@@ed.t.hansen6499 I’ve always liked BMW bikes. I had a K75RT for several years but the local Dealer didn’t like working on it and gave me some bad advice about how far the rear could go before spline adj. Later I bought an R90/6 that was a joy to ride but ran into the same prejudice and an electric gremlin prodded me to sell that. I’ve had a couple of ST1300s that were fine big mile bikes but they got a little too heavy, hence the Goldwing. I looked at the NT750 but I don’t want a chain driven bike and like your GS it felt a little tall for me.
I was absolutely amazed by my cb500x rally raid level 2. It is great on road, and incredible off road. Easy to pick up due to low center of gravity, and I can almost ride it like a small dual sport. I even take it off small jumps. You can build an adventure bike for half the cost of the factory bikes and it will have better suspension.
With a 19" wheel and twin disc brakes up front now, it seems almost the perfect light 'adventure' bike - just don't wonder too much about why Honda registered the NX500 trademark back in May.

I had a Uly! LOVED that bike. Make sure not to have too high of expectations out of the Cb motor compared to the Uly, otherwise, it’s a great bike to downsize!
Hi guys Just came across your review. Totally agree 100 % with everything you said. I own a 2021 model. I have recently done 7 weeks in Spain and 3 weeks in Portugal both on road and on gravel trails ( 5000 miles in total) and my bike did everything you said it does. The one modification I would suggest is the sprocket replacement, 16T front and 39T rear
@@alsacs3635 Replacing the original front sprocket 15T for a16T increases the gear ratio. The best way I can explain is by using my bike as the example. My bike with a 16T front and a 41T rear does 50 mph at 4000 rpm and 60 mph at 4500 rpm a stock 15T x 41T will probably be around 4200 rpm at 50 mph and 4700 rpm at 60 mph ( this has the same reducing effect in all six years as you go through the gear box ) so the upgrade gives less stress on the engine because you don't have to rev it so much to get to the next gear, once you are at which ever cruising speed you choose the engine will be revving less so more mpg. It also means that the bike can do a little better top speed but not enough to warrant this as the sole reason for the change. I filled my bike on Thursday, I did 205 miles and put in 12.5 litres, this translates to 75 mpg at regular daily use. Hope this helps

Some years ago there was a group of lads of different ages who took their bikes half way around the world and at the end they all agreed that if they did it again they would all use smaller bikes with a much lower cc after travelling though deserts ,swamplands and everything else they came across they said the bikes were over powered and to heavy( the series was called Mundo Enduro and is well worth watching)
Don't have one but your comments on this video and others seem spot on. Do have a Gen1(07) KLR with a few mods and appreciate the comparisons. Keep thinking of a R1200GS (used) just for giggles. Getting older (72+) so don't ride as hard as used to. Also have a 01 DRZ400E and shipped it off with my son thinking he would get more use out of it. More thoughtful of the battles I want to tackle and live in a VERY rural area with lots of riding opportunities but nobody to ride with (don't want to be "crow" bait :)) Anyway thanks.
Yes, you should buy an X. I had an F model for a year, super fun bike, GREAT gas mileage! I bought a 2022 "X" because I prefer a more upright position. Based on the price and versatility this is a hard bike to pass up. Buy one and have fun riding it; whatever type of riding you do.
Hey great review, I got a FJR, Drz400 and aVstram 1000. I had a tw200 and it was the most fun of all! Lookin hard at a cb500x to fix a hole and maby delete the DL1K or the Drz Doing a lot of research and thinking..bigger isn't always better.. The DL1k is kitted out and I could take any GS but it is a beast and the size holds me back from real exploring and adventure.. The DRZ is anemic on the highway above 60.. the quest for the perfect balance goes on..... Thanks for the down to earth Review!
Under the title of this video it shows Feb 20, 2022 so I was under the impression this review was about the 2022 CB500X which in the USA only comes in a green/black paint scheme with a very distinctive looking bronze color front fork. After watching a few minutes of this video I realized it was about an older model.

I commute by bike and I started on a little CBF 125 which was very easy to handle. Afterwards I switched to a Transalp 650 but it was somehow slightly to big and heavy for me. For example when it fell down, I could not pick it up again alone. I sold it and was looking for a 125 again... but they are very expensive in europe because everybody can drive one nowadays after a short course. I found a CBR 250R for very little money which I ride since that time and I love it for being the great commuter bike it is but somehow the Honda 500 line is very appealing to me since everybody is saying they are easy to handle - maybe I'll try one out as a next upgrade.
@@bfeadventures we'll it really aint fast but I love that it brings me to work every day reliably, is easy to work on and therefore just safes so much money in my pocket. I know it sounds boring but as a commuter some criterias may just be different when choosing a motorcycle :)
I've just started looking at adventure bikes and am confused about something. If I buy a badass Africa twin and take off into the woods and manage to lay it down, how on God's green earth would I pick up that beast? It seems to me for adventure bikes, weight is extremely important because dropping the bike seems far more common when off trail. I'm a bit mystified at how an Africa twin can even be classed as an adventure bike with that much weight. Anyway, thank you.
Great point! It definitely takes a strong back or a friend to help get it up! I personally pick it up all the time, but I’m only 32 and pretty active. I typically have a buddy or 2 with me when I’m riding gnarly stuff though.
Definitely one of the better reviews of the CBX. I often hear reviewers say that though that its not exciting. But like all things moto, excitement is a spectrum - I would state for the record its more exciting than any generation of KLR, and other direct competitors. And even with the 17 front, Id rather take it offroad than a KLR (may just be me). Also, I got mine w/ 216 miles for $3900!
@@Jubeininja1221 Im 6'3. I did the raised rally seat for a couple years. This season I got lowered footpegs too - works great for me. It was a private sale. 2016 with ABS. Just check with my local dealer yesterday - my trade-in value is more than I paid for it (inflation). :/

I have not owned an F800GS, so I can't speak directly to that. However, having an R1200GS, I will say the BMW just seems more solidly built. You will notice a downgrade in features, suspension, and comfort.

For highway riding, what does "add a bigger sprocket on the front" mean? Google search is suggesting adding to forks or front tire; what should I search? Does adding it allow you to go above 70mph more comfortably for some reason?
@@bfeadventures Thanks! I saw this other video where a guy added one and showed the before and after and it was a massive RPM difference and his 1st gear became usable. What I didn't like was his speedometer was now broken by reporting him going 5 miles slower than he actually was.
@@JesseWarden those are all things to consider. Something else to note - these little motors have no problem buzzing along at higher rpm’s. Those little pistons will keep plugging away just fine.
@@bfeadventures I think like ALL of the Europeons/UK people I watched were in love with CBR500x, but some of the Americans were like "doesn't handle as well as a heavier bike 70-80mph". I can only guess it's because they don't have high speeds over in Europe like we do?
I have had this bike since it was launched in 2013, same model as yours only mine is red in colour. It is a great bike, does everything you want. Don't know if I would class it as a true adventure bike unless you fully R.R. it. It's only now that folks are realising just how good this bike is and it is now on its 3rd generation. The Halfrica twin term was coined on our U.K. forum I believe. p.s. I wouldn't put bar risers on it. Have a look at Bret Tkacs videos as to why bar risers on any bike aren't a good solution.
Great overview, thanks! I went from a Super Tenere to a CRF250L... Now I am looking for something right in the middle. The problem I am finding with these CB500X.... used ones in my area are going for just under MSRP of new and the couple new ones I found are over MSRP. I sold my 250 last year and am really eager to get back onto a bike but just don't think the price is worth it. I dont know if it is the mileage people are after or if they are just that good.
They really are that good. The used market is up across the board. A properly setup used 500X will treat as well or better than new. I think that is part of the reason they are so high.
I’m guessing Honda decided on a front 15t socket as it generates a little more acceleration through the gears. Would this put a little more strain on the engine?
Great question! At this point, I have no questions or concerns about the reliability of the Honda engine regardless of whether or not someone has a 14, 15, or 16 tooth front sprocket.
I am actually on a search for a fitting adv bike. I have all my eyes on th cb 500x but also on the Africa Twin... On the one side i am just a beginner and its gonna be my first bike. On the otherhand i just got into body building. am 1,90cm (6,2 ft) and almost 95kg on my own. I heard already from a few that the cb500x might to small for me. on the otherhand i am a relaxed person and driver. same with driving my car. Never was into speeding. I am absolutely unsure if the edge of what i need is that far from what i want. My goal is definitely traveling long road trips but dont wanna hesitate if there are some gravels on the way, thats why an adv bike. I wanna stick to japanese bikes thou. Any suggestions out there ?
My son is 6 ft 4, and he can ride my CB a little bit uncomfortable but he can ride it. If I were to let him ride it all the time I would have him put Lowering pegs on it and makes a big difference on where your feet stand when you're riding. Also you can put a different shifter on it which moves the shifter out a bit and forward and makes it. easier to shift. Other than that he enjoys the bike.
Dolly said it perfectly. I would definitely suggest getting things to help with the ergonomics on the bike. Stock, you will feel cramped. I would say that a lot boils down to budget and how much you plan to progress in your riding ability. If you’re just getting started, the Africa twin is more bike than you will ever need. It will definitely be capable of any riding ability you will possess for a while. However, if you are new to riding, it will feel like an absolute handful off-road. The CB will feel much more manageable, but it will definitely feel under powered when compared to a motor twice its size. I think the question most important is how far do you plan to advance in riding ability and are you OK upgrading bikes? The CB will be a better bike to start on, but the AT is naturally a better bike.
Another affordable beginner bike to consider that will feel bigger is the KLR 650. However, if you plan to run more street than dirt, the CB is better.
Wow thank you all, for the constructive answers. THat the AT overcomes the cb was clear for me. I am simply not sure, how much i need of it. It could be also a waste of money if i do not use the whole spectrum of a bike. I have generally not problems in tuning a bike to fit my needs. My plan is definitely to go on bigger tours. Reason is, with my previous job i worked on a plane (Flying Chef) and traveled a lot and i loved it. But well ...the pandemic hit me hard in this way and i lost my job. Now i said to my self, if its not a plane then a bike shall do. So travelling ist my first priority, probably also commuting. The KLR 650 is definitely also on my list. Aswell as the V-Strom 650. The GS series of BMW id like to avoid, just simply bc i dont like bmw. By the end of April i have my exam to complete license and then i start with all the test drives of the bikes. THanks so much for the input, definitely helped with my list of wishlisted bikes =D.
I often tour with my wife (50kg) and top box and side boxes and ride like a few 1000 kms with her. It's totally fine. The stock seat is comfortable for long rides.
After shopping around a bunch I put a deposit down on a '22 500x at my local Honda place. After trying a few of the competition 650 dual sports I wanted something a little more road/highway friendly. Never had issues with size or seat height but riding the XR650L at highway speeds just felt a little sketchy. The one time I had it up around 90mph and got "death wobble" head shaking didn't inspire confidence either. The KLR didn't feel much better at those speeds. I wanted something nimble, budget friendly, and comfortable to ride at open highway speeds of 75-80mph. Sounds like I may need to go to a 16 tooth front sprocket eventually but I'm going to try it stock first and see how it handles. If I had the budget I'd get the Africa Twin or at least one of the Suzuki/Kawasaki 650 adventure twins, but it seems like I'll be happy with the 500x.
I love this bike, I have the same one. It has been my commuter for years. I'm going to try some light off road. What size is the Shinko on the front? Did you have to change the fender?
I’ll check when I get back to the garage. I don’t remember. There is a great write up on ADV Rider. You do have to fab some brackets to raise the fender
I went from the pirelli 120/70 to Shinko 120/90 , and it's huge in comparison. The fender no longer fits. Oh one added note it's a bias ply, tube type only it said on the side wall, call me crazy but I mounted it with no tube , 150 miles in and still going strong. Don't try this at home kids.

That’s a tough question to answer. I do not have enough direct experience with the 390 to give you a valid answer. From what I know, this is my synopsis: If you want tech or more off-road capability out of the box - go 390. If you want forever reliability and better highway manners - 500X

I take it the suspension can be changed out for WPs or Olyns. An spiked 21” front wheel an 19 rear. Do you know the name of the Nikon type MX spoked rims for tubeless. If the Cubbie 500x doesn’t have cruise control. Can you suggest a good one. For anyone out there who’s considering heated grips? In the UK we swear by Oxford for these. If you are looking for a short bike, that is more road oriented, but can definitely still be taken off road, this would be a great choice! Rally Raid makes some fantastic products for the CB!
Reliability is incredible (Honda tends to be known for it. Gas mileage will vary greatly with this small motor depending what you are doing with it. For general commuting, I get around 55mpg.
Nice video. I own an ‘18 model, and am loving it. I have a question for you concerning the taller Shinko on the front. I’ve heard about it, but hadn’t heard any reviews yet on it. When you added it, did you have to modify the front fender for clearance? I’m running Shinko’s now, and will need to replace this year. I run a lot of gravel, and the front can get squirrelly on me, just wondering if that might help! Thanks!
I have been targeting this bike for a while. I briefly rode a KLR 650 yesterday, it was kind of a dog. Not much acceleration. Considering that the CB500 is a twin, And the KLR is a single, Does the CB500x have better acceleration?
The question is... how goofy would a person look riding that bike when he's 6'1, and slowing it on the right lane going 65 mph while cars zooming 85 mph by on the left lane?
Let me ask you off-road motorheads a question. I have 2 bikes Honda NC700 and a Honda Africa Twin. I have no confidence with taking my AT off road. What should I do? Should I take a off road training course and use my AT or should I purchase a smaller bike and then do off road training? Thanks
I highly suggest trying out a course before giving up on the Africa twin. I may be biased because I loved my AT AND we offer interactive training tours! 😂 But seriously, I’d try an ADV training or even try learning skills on a smaller bike. You can often rent smaller bikes to learn on!
@@bfeadventures Thanks for your input and advice. I love my AT, on the road, but it's like a Sherman Tank with it's weight. I got the 2019 AT sports with the dct with all the armor and I got on the new Kawasaki KLR and thought "Wow, this seems like it would be 100 times easier to control." I have so much invested in my AT that I don't think I'll give up on it yet. Once again, thanks for your advice.
I have no direct experience w/ the 390 ADV, but I have ridden with them. At a glance, the only thing I would say is the CB would handle distance on the road better simply due to the parallel twin 500. The 390 has way better electronics. I can't speak to anything else, not specifically riding one.
My heart is broken, I have wanted a bike my whole life and finally got a bike and now I'm ready for my dream, a new Honda. I call one place and they want $1098 on top of any bike in the show room, the next place has a CR500X 2021 new, msrp is $6999 and he said they added crash bars and tires and now it's $9200 including his ridiculous fees. $2200 for bars and tires? Does Honda really approve of crooks selling their bikes? I'm not going to hand morons my money for nothing
well - if it includes taxes title and all that, it is what it is. My last bike was a slightly used, and it wasn't much under MSRP but all those fees were gone (not taxes of course). But those fees are pretty standard stuff.
great weight; comfort. gearing to get used to but the 750gs is top heavy for me; besides being 2-3x the price.. 30kg more and not as ez to handle. 500x you can ride anyhwere. I added a center stand and adventure pegs;- a mistake, for access to the side stand..
This was my #1 wishlist bike until you said over 6ft is a little cramped… I haven’t sat on one yet but I was really hoping this bike would work for me where the rebels, sportsters and other similar beginner bikes have came up short. Gonna be gutted if this bike is too small for me :( Assuming the 2022 model is the same size as this. I’m 6’3 320 so I’m not having a good time finding a beginner bike lol

Yep, I have a 2021, use it for commuting 30miles to work on country roads, good economy easy to ride....... not so good on the motorway / forget Autobahns, but they are boring anyway. Buy one!!
Great point, John! It’s definitely lighter. I have no experience with the 390adv, but I would say the twin 500 will have much better highway characteristics if you plan to commute on it as well. Off-road, I’m sure the KTM would excel.
I have the 2020 version and its a great bike..comfy, fast enough, looks good and very economical. The only negative is that its vibrating a lot...I often get tingling in my hands..so I need to look at rectifying it somehow, otherwise I'll have to sell it

It depends how soft the sand is. The distance will be no problem. This is a FANTASTIC beginner bike. However, deep sand may be a problem. I know more power is often better to stay on top.

Hi, Croaking Toad! Typically when we refer to "entry level" we are referring to beginner friendly power and lower price - both of which new riders value. This is a fantastic bike for all skill levels. Comparing this bike to my Africa Twin in terms of ergonomics, on-road power, highway cruisability, suspension travel, ground clearance, etc - bigger is better in every one of those ways. However, I would not tell a beginner to buy an Africa Twin. I would suggest this. This is better in some ways.
Are you an Off roader, get a Himalayan, the Only bike that will take you to Mt Everest. You like cruising on black top roads then get A Harley Davidson .

And if you happen to drop it it's really easy to pick up compared to the bigger bikes it's still heavy but it's easier. and it definitely has a great mileage with a bigger tank. And it really just sips the gas and with the gas prices that we're seeing today that's a very good thing. And I also have the 705s on my bike as well. I raised the fender on my bike by putting metal spacers and longer bolts so the tire fit better. I also installed the ABS shut off switch.

I wanted say great video, an honest review. I have own a 2015 and have really enjoyed the bike so much I have kept it. It’s a beast on gravel a lot of fun. We two up from north Georgia to FL and camp monthly during the summer in the mountains. We had many large bikes just like you. I have hard and soft luggage. When you 2 up, how does it perform at about 70mph? Is it working really hard to cruise at that speed?
@@alsacs3635 That’s a good question, it does well. I read where these guys go to the 16 tooth front sprocket, to lower RPMs. Then 6 gear becomes to long legged. The parallel twin runs well at a higher RPM than a single or a V Twin. So cruising at 5500 RPMs the engine is working well and not stressed.

I am very glad that Honda heard the rider's voice and upgraded the suspension from the 22 models. I bought my at the end of the last year so I am very excited to go for a ride as the weather makes it possible.
I picked up a 2016 with RR suspension a couple months ago. I agree with everything you covered. My biggest gripe is the stupid shift lever being so tight inboard. Really hard to shift while standing and wearing off road boots. I wish RR would get their wheelsets back in stock.

At 75 I’ve been looking at this to replace my 2015 Goldwing that I use for everything transportation. The plethora off accessories mean I can fit it with bags, grip warmers, lights and crash bars so I won’t be giving up much ability beyond pulling a trailer and rain protection. I’ve pretty much stopped doing big miles and the thrifty gas mileage is a big bonus.
It will definitely feel small, but for all the reasons you stated, it could be a great replacement!
will be a shock; in power, comfort. but its great, light and ez to handle. i'm a young 71, and my bmw 750GS is really to top heavy for me if it goes down. Its's 25kg heavier. great thru heavy city traffic . U an also consider the nc750x dct but heavier, a bit smaller tank.

I had a K75RT for several years but the local Dealer didn’t like working on it and gave me some bad advice about how far the rear could go before spline adj. Later I bought an R90/6 that was a joy to ride but ran into the same prejudice and an electric gremlin prodded me to sell that. I’ve had a couple of ST1300s that were fine big mile bikes but they got a little too heavy, hence the Goldwing. I looked at the NT750 but I don’t want a chain driven bike and like your GS it felt a little tall for me.

I was absolutely amazed by my cb500x rally raid level 2. It is great on road, and incredible off road. Easy to pick up due to low center of gravity, and I can almost ride it like a small dual sport. I even take it off small jumps. You can build an adventure bike for half the cost of the factory bikes and it will have better suspension.

I had a Uly! LOVED that bike. Make sure not to have too high of expectations out of the Cb motor compared to the Uly, otherwise, it’s a great bike to downsize!

The one modification I would suggest is the sprocket replacement, 16T front and 39T rear

@@alsacs3635 Replacing the original front sprocket 15T for a16T increases the gear ratio.
The best way I can explain is by using my bike as the example.
My bike with a 16T front and a 41T rear does 50 mph at 4000 rpm and 60 mph at 4500 rpm a stock 15T x 41T will probably be around 4200 rpm at 50 mph and 4700 rpm at 60 mph ( this has the same reducing effect in all six years as you go through the gear box ) so the upgrade gives less stress on the engine because you don't have to rev it so much to get to the next gear, once you are at which ever cruising speed you choose the engine will be revving less so more mpg. It also means that the bike can do a little better top speed but not enough to warrant this as the sole reason for the change.
I filled my bike on Thursday, I did 205 miles and put in 12.5 litres, this translates to 75 mpg at regular daily use.

Some years ago there was a group of lads of different ages who took their bikes half way around the world and at the end they all agreed that if they did it again they would all use smaller bikes with a much lower cc after travelling though deserts ,swamplands and everything else they came across they said the bikes were over powered and to heavy( the series was called Mundo Enduro and is well worth watching)

Don't have one but your comments on this video and others seem spot on. Do have a Gen1(07) KLR with a few mods and appreciate the comparisons. Keep thinking of a R1200GS (used) just for giggles. Getting older (72+) so don't ride as hard as used to. Also have a 01 DRZ400E and shipped it off with my son thinking he would get more use out of it. More thoughtful of the battles I want to tackle and live in a VERY rural area with lots of riding opportunities but nobody to ride with (don't want to be "crow" bait :)) Anyway thanks.
Yes, you should buy an X. I had an F model for a year, super fun bike, GREAT gas mileage! I bought a 2022 "X" because I prefer a more upright position. Based on the price and versatility this is a hard bike to pass up. Buy one and have fun riding it; whatever type of riding you do.

I had a tw200 and it was the most fun of all! Lookin hard at a cb500x to fix a hole and maby delete the DL1K or the Drz Doing a lot of research and thinking..bigger isn't always better.. The DL1k is kitted out and I could take any GS but it is a beast and the size holds me back from real exploring and adventure.. The DRZ is anemic on the highway above 60.. the quest for the perfect balance goes on..... Thanks for the down to earth Review!
Under the title of this video it shows Feb 20, 2022 so I was under the impression this review was about the 2022 CB500X which in the USA only comes in a green/black paint scheme with a very distinctive looking bronze color front fork. After watching a few minutes of this video I realized it was about an older model.

I commute by bike and I started on a little CBF 125 which was very easy to handle. Afterwards I switched to a Transalp 650 but it was somehow slightly to big and heavy for me. For example when it fell down, I could not pick it up again alone. I sold it and was looking for a 125 again... but they are very expensive in europe because everybody can drive one nowadays after a short course. I found a CBR 250R for very little money which I ride since that time and I love it for being the great commuter bike it is but somehow the Honda 500 line is very appealing to me since everybody is saying they are easy to handle - maybe I'll try one out as a next upgrade.

I've just started looking at adventure bikes and am confused about something. If I buy a badass Africa twin and take off into the woods and manage to lay it down, how on God's green earth would I pick up that beast? It seems to me for adventure bikes, weight is extremely important because dropping the bike seems far more common when off trail. I'm a bit mystified at how an Africa twin can even be classed as an adventure bike with that much weight. Anyway, thank you.
Great point! It definitely takes a strong back or a friend to help get it up! I personally pick it up all the time, but I’m only 32 and pretty active. I typically have a buddy or 2 with me when I’m riding gnarly stuff though.
I have same year and color, love it. I do use it on road, great on back roads.

Definitely one of the better reviews of the CBX. I often hear reviewers say that though that its not exciting. But like all things moto, excitement is a spectrum - I would state for the record its more exciting than any generation of KLR, and other direct competitors. And even with the 17 front, Id rather take it offroad than a KLR (may just be me). Also, I got mine w/ 216 miles for $3900!

I have not owned an F800GS, so I can't speak directly to that. However, having an R1200GS, I will say the BMW just seems more solidly built. You will notice a downgrade in features, suspension, and comfort.

For highway riding, what does "add a bigger sprocket on the front" mean? Google search is suggesting adding to forks or front tire; what should I search? Does adding it allow you to go above 70mph more comfortably for some reason?
Adding a larger sprocket at the countershaft (the sprocket off the motor) effectively creates taller gearing to allow for better highway cruising.
@@bfeadventures Thanks! I saw this other video where a guy added one and showed the before and after and it was a massive RPM difference and his 1st gear became usable. What I didn't like was his speedometer was now broken by reporting him going 5 miles slower than he actually was.
@@JesseWarden those are all things to consider. Something else to note - these little motors have no problem buzzing along at higher rpm’s. Those little pistons will keep plugging away just fine.
@@bfeadventures I think like ALL of the Europeons/UK people I watched were in love with CBR500x, but some of the Americans were like "doesn't handle as well as a heavier bike 70-80mph". I can only guess it's because they don't have high speeds over in Europe like we do?

I have had this bike since it was launched in 2013, same model as yours only mine is red in colour.
It is a great bike, does everything you want. Don't know if I would class it as a true adventure bike unless you fully R.R. it.
It's only now that folks are realising just how good this bike is and it is now on its 3rd generation. The Halfrica twin term was coined on our U.K. forum I believe.
p.s. I wouldn't put bar risers on it. Have a look at Bret Tkacs videos as to why bar risers on any bike aren't a good solution.

Great overview, thanks! I went from a Super Tenere to a CRF250L... Now I am looking for something right in the middle. The problem I am finding with these CB500X.... used ones in my area are going for just under MSRP of new and the couple new ones I found are over MSRP. I sold my 250 last year and am really eager to get back onto a bike but just don't think the price is worth it. I dont know if it is the mileage people are after or if they are just that good.
They really are that good. The used market is up across the board. A properly setup used 500X will treat as well or better than new. I think that is part of the reason they are so high.

Great question! At this point, I have no questions or concerns about the reliability of the Honda engine regardless of whether or not someone has a 14, 15, or 16 tooth front sprocket.
I am actually on a search for a fitting adv bike.
I have all my eyes on th cb 500x but also on the Africa Twin...
On the one side i am just a beginner and its gonna be my first bike. On the otherhand i just got into body building. am 1,90cm (6,2 ft) and almost 95kg on my own.
I heard already from a few that the cb500x might to small for me. on the otherhand i am a relaxed person and driver. same with driving my car. Never was into speeding.
I am absolutely unsure if the edge of what i need is that far from what i want.
My goal is definitely traveling long road trips but dont wanna hesitate if there are some gravels on the way, thats why an adv bike.
I wanna stick to japanese bikes thou.

My son is 6 ft 4, and he can ride my CB a little bit uncomfortable but he can ride it. If I were to let him ride it all the time I would have him put Lowering pegs on it and makes a big difference on where your feet stand when you're riding. Also you can put a different shifter on it which moves the shifter out a bit and forward and makes it. easier to shift. Other than that he enjoys the bike.
Dolly said it perfectly. I would definitely suggest getting things to help with the ergonomics on the bike. Stock, you will feel cramped. I would say that a lot boils down to budget and how much you plan to progress in your riding ability. If you’re just getting started, the Africa twin is more bike than you will ever need. It will definitely be capable of any riding ability you will possess for a while. However, if you are new to riding, it will feel like an absolute handful off-road. The CB will feel much more manageable, but it will definitely feel under powered when compared to a motor twice its size. I think the question most important is how far do you plan to advance in riding ability and are you OK upgrading bikes? The CB will be a better bike to start on, but the AT is naturally a better bike.
Another affordable beginner bike to consider that will feel bigger is the KLR 650. However, if you plan to run more street than dirt, the CB is better.
Wow thank you all, for the constructive answers. THat the AT overcomes the cb was clear for me. I am simply not sure, how much i need of it. It could be also a waste of money if i do not use the whole spectrum of a bike.
I have generally not problems in tuning a bike to fit my needs.
My plan is definitely to go on bigger tours.
Reason is, with my previous job i worked on a plane (Flying Chef) and traveled a lot and i loved it. But well ...the pandemic hit me hard in this way and i lost my job.
Now i said to my self, if its not a plane then a bike shall do. So travelling ist my first priority, probably also commuting.
The KLR 650 is definitely also on my list. Aswell as the V-Strom 650.
The GS series of BMW id like to avoid, just simply bc i dont like bmw.
By the end of April i have my exam to complete license and then i start with all the test drives of the bikes.

I often tour with my wife (50kg) and top box and side boxes and ride like a few 1000 kms with her. It's totally fine. The stock seat is comfortable for long rides.
But if you had the opportunity to get an nc750x (22) with the same price, would you change?
After shopping around a bunch I put a deposit down on a '22 500x at my local Honda place. After trying a few of the competition 650 dual sports I wanted something a little more road/highway friendly. Never had issues with size or seat height but riding the XR650L at highway speeds just felt a little sketchy. The one time I had it up around 90mph and got "death wobble" head shaking didn't inspire confidence either. The KLR didn't feel much better at those speeds. I wanted something nimble, budget friendly, and comfortable to ride at open highway speeds of 75-80mph. Sounds like I may need to go to a 16 tooth front sprocket eventually but I'm going to try it stock first and see how it handles. If I had the budget I'd get the Africa Twin or at least one of the Suzuki/Kawasaki 650 adventure twins, but it seems like I'll be happy with the 500x.

I’ll check when I get back to the garage. I don’t remember. There is a great write up on ADV Rider. You do have to fab some brackets to raise the fender
I went from the pirelli 120/70 to Shinko 120/90 , and it's huge in comparison.
The fender no longer fits. Oh one added note it's a bias ply, tube type only it said on the side wall, call me crazy but I mounted it with no tube , 150 miles in and still going strong. Don't try this at home kids.

I just fabbed up 2 aluminum brackets to raise the fender from the original mounting points.
I can hit 168 km/hr in highways with 2018 Honda CB500X.. offroad no issues at all

That’s a tough question to answer. I do not have enough direct experience with the 390 to give you a valid answer.
From what I know, this is my synopsis: If you want tech or more off-road capability out of the box - go 390.
If you want forever reliability and better highway manners - 500X

If you are looking for a short bike, that is more road oriented, but can definitely still be taken off road, this would be a great choice! Rally Raid makes some fantastic products for the CB!

I have! suspension on the 390 felt a little better, but both are soft! I also think the bigger twin of the 500 allows easier highway cruising.

Reliability is incredible (Honda tends to be known for it. Gas mileage will vary greatly with this small motor depending what you are doing with it. For general commuting, I get around 55mpg.

Honestly, it will feel small, but there are things you can do like lowered pegs, bar risers, etc that will help substantially.
I have been targeting this bike for a while.
I briefly rode a KLR 650 yesterday, it was kind of a dog. Not much acceleration.
Considering that the CB500 is a twin,
And the KLR is a single,
Does the CB500x have better acceleration?
I would say, “Yes.” It is so smooth though, that it may not feel like it’s much faster.
The question is... how goofy would a person look riding that bike when he's 6'1, and slowing it on the right lane going 65 mph while cars zooming 85 mph by on the left lane?
We just had a guy that was 6‘3“ riding our CB this weekend with no problems at all!

The pegs are just aftermarket bolt ons. They drop them straight down. I'm not sure if there is anything to move them forward.
Let me ask you off-road motorheads a question. I have 2 bikes Honda NC700 and a Honda Africa Twin. I have no confidence with taking my AT off road. What should I do? Should I take a off road training course and use my AT or should I purchase a smaller bike and then do off road training? Thanks
I highly suggest trying out a course before giving up on the Africa twin. I may be biased because I loved my AT AND we offer interactive training tours! 😂 But seriously, I’d try an ADV training or even try learning skills on a smaller bike. You can often rent smaller bikes to learn on!

I got the 2019 AT sports with the dct with all the armor and I got on the new Kawasaki KLR and thought "Wow, this seems like it would be 100 times easier to control." It’s about 33” seat height with the taller tires. It has SRCmoto crash bars on it.

Honestly I think this maybe better overall what do you think?
I have no direct experience w/ the 390 ADV, but I have ridden with them. At a glance, the only thing I would say is the CB would handle distance on the road better simply due to the parallel twin 500. The 390 has way better electronics. I can't speak to anything else, not specifically riding one.

My heart is broken, I have wanted a bike my whole life and finally got a bike and now I'm ready for my dream, a new Honda. I call one place and they want $1098 on top of any bike in the show room, the next place has a CR500X 2021 new, msrp is $6999 and he said they added crash bars and tires and now it's $9200 including his ridiculous fees. $2200 for bars and tires? Does Honda really approve of crooks selling their bikes? I'm not going to hand morons my money for nothing

well - if it includes taxes title and all that, it is what it is. My last bike was a slightly used, and it wasn't much under MSRP but all those fees were gone (not taxes of course). But those fees are pretty standard stuff.

This was my #1 wishlist bike until you said over 6ft is a little cramped…
I haven’t sat on one yet but I was really hoping this bike would work for me where the rebels, sportsters and other similar beginner bikes have came up short.
Gonna be gutted if this bike is too small for me :(
Assuming the 2022 model is the same size as this. I’m 6’3 320 so I’m not having a good time finding a beginner bike lol
I hope like crazy you don’t feel cramped, but there are plenty of things you can do to improve the ergonomics!
i would not feel cramped at 6'1. i'm 6' and seat is hi o not be really ez to climb onto. Add handlebar risers and your good to go.

Yep, I have a 2021, use it for commuting 30miles to work on country roads, good economy easy to ride....... not so good on the motorway / forget Autobahns, but they are boring anyway. Buy one!!

Great point, John! It’s definitely lighter. I have no experience with the 390adv, but I would say the twin 500 will have much better highway characteristics if you plan to commute on it as well. Off-road, I’m sure the KTM would excel.

I have the 2020 version and its a great bike..comfy, fast enough, looks good and very economical. The only negative is that its vibrating a lot...I often get tingling in my hands..so I need to look at rectifying it somehow, otherwise I'll have to sell it
Maybe look into vibration dampening risers?
@@bfeadventures Thanks for that...I'd never even heard of them so I'll look into them. I don't actually need the bars bars be any higher but if a riser gets rid of the vibes then I'd get one. Cheers.

It depends how soft the sand is. The distance will be no problem. This is a FANTASTIC beginner bike. However, deep sand may be a problem. I know more power is often better to stay on top.

Didn't finish the video. When folks start talking about 'beginner or 'entry level' bikes ... Time to move on. Bigger isn't better.
Hi, Croaking Toad! Typically when we refer to "entry level" we are referring to beginner friendly power and lower price - both of which new riders value. This is a fantastic bike for all skill levels. Comparing this bike to my Africa Twin in terms of ergonomics, on-road power, highway cruisability, suspension travel, ground clearance, etc - bigger is better in every one of those ways. However, I would not tell a beginner to buy an Africa Twin. I would suggest this. This is better in some ways.
