  • You really ‘ate up’ our recent article about Soda bread and 4 other Irish Bread Varieties. Some of you requested recipes and your wish is our command. This time, why not join us for some Soda bread making in the Old Rectory at the Ulster Folk Museum at Cultra in Northern Ireland. Gillian shows us how quick and easy it actually is to make traditional Irish soda farls on a griddle in a home which is estimated to be 300 years old. The house originally stood about one mile east of Toomebridge before being dismantled and moved to the museum in 1971. One of its residents was a Captain Archibald McCallion who had fought as an officer in the British forces during the American War of Independence. Thanks so much Gillian for allowing us to join you!

I went to an Irish pub in Marietta or Kennesaw, Georgia, USA to taste soda bread. I had to buy a meal in order to get any. I went online and found a recipe about 5 years ago and made a loaf in the oven with raisins. Most of the time I make bread on the stove with a Dutch oven lid on a cast iron pan. I usually use water and buckwheat with a pinch of salt only. Sometimes I put shredded carrots in the bread I make and cut the bread in triangles. With the Irish Soda Bread, I used the recipe and it was nice. I don't do well with gluten, but sometimes I make wheat bread. Thanks for the recipe. We have 2 people so a smaller loaf is much better than many recipes that are available. Thanks again.

Thankyou going to try it and will use a traditional frypan all I have but may invest in electric griddle. Fingers crossed and a few Irish and Scotish blessings as have ancestors from both country and they made Irish Soda Bread. I have made this successfully and with gluten flour which is tricky as it is denser. However going to try the farls way as sound very similar to how I heard from my Nanna over a fuel stove on a griddle and was referred to as a girdle scone. Would that be right? From the world down under. My great grandmother would walk to m arents home in her pinny and make girdle scones for my dad's lunch. He loved them so much told meany times and loved my great grandmother. Robyn

Ok. Now l'm confused. Do l knead or not knead? Help please have seen both versions. I make griddle scones and don't knead those, but l thought l was supposed to knead farls.

Hey Alyson, we’re so happy to read the video brought back memories of home to someone so far away :-) we don’t have a potato bread recipe specifically. Would have to consult google here. But let us know if you make one successfully and we will share the recipe because a lot of people have been asking :-)

For potatoe farl you will need yesterday’s mashed potatoes, sometimes the mash would have green onion in it,called champ.Just gradually add the flour mix with your hand until you have a soft dough, roll it out 1/4 inch ,whatever diameter you want, put on a medium low heat. Brown marks are what you need to see on both sides, yum

Been looking for a good recipe for ages. This looks delicious, but a tbsp flour is 15g, so 8 tbsps is only 120g. There's a huge difference between 8tbsp flour and 2 cups.

1 tbs flour weighs about 8 or 9 grams. Are you mixing this up with mls. 1 tbs = 15 mls.

The 'round' before cutting into farls, is called a cake.

Sounds like your heat is too high o r your mixture is a little too wet,my gramma would bake the sides and wrap them in a linen

Ye wrap em in linen/tea towels to soften the outside usually, the steam will make sure the crust isn't too crunchy.

Probably they used barley or oats instead of wheat flour.
