The whole plot line of Ma telling her daughter that she is sick when is isn’t is actually based on a true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard
They both just had the same condition manchusen by proxy, but it isn't based off that.
Ma is a pretty chaotic film. First we have here Octavia Spencer, then some unruly kids who want to mess around and make her (Ma) life a living hell from start to finish. Billy’s reactions are far more entertaining than most of could ever expect. Seems like he comes around whenever we need him the most.
My trust issues are at a whole nother level now but thanks for the funny collaboration

Ma actually suffered from munchausen-by-proxy syndrome, which is a mental disease in which the parent actually believes their child is sick, wounded or disabled, while most of the time they are the ones causing the child to grow sick by giving them wrong medication. Most people who suffer from the syndrome are actually mothers and some say that's it's like the other side of the spectrum from postpartum depression. Usually they don't even realize that what they're doing is wrong and they believe that they are doing the right thing because they truly believe that something is 'wrong' with their child. The disease is just not widely known because there is a very small percentage (I believe it was below 5%) of people who have been diagnosed with munchausen.
