      In my version, you’re correct. And in Novo Amor’s original version, the louder takes are panned left and right, but there might actually be a third take lower in volume down the middle. It’s hard to tell.

    This was amazing! Have you done a video to get a style like “once in a lifetime” by finneas? I’ve been trying and failing to get that kind of vocal. Also, is there any stock reverb that comes close to the Valhalla. It’s so creamy and smooth. Maybe there is no stand in

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  Рік тому

      Thanks! As far as a Finneas type vocal, make sure you’re using tight tuning on the vocals, build your vocal compression skills, and then of course build your vocal skills so that you get a great vocal take. Once you have those things dialed in, it’s amazing how easy it is to get a good reverb sound.
      You can certainly use stock reverbs to get a similar sound to Valhalla if it’s a more subtle effect, and perhaps even if it’s obvious. Using a filter or high cut on the reverb can make a huge difference to the perceived warmth of the reverb.

      @@theindiemusiclab I'm curious if you've done any videos on using multiband compression on vocals. It could have been because my recording techniques were poor, but I came to use a multi-pressor in the chain to push down frequencies between 200 and 1k.

      @@theindiemusiclab One more thing! I came across these amazing impulse responses that are hidden gems. They are for space designer. They are called Bricasti m7 and BG Lexicon 480. I think you should do a video on those because the one I found was over 4 years old. Could be an awesome video for your subscribers to see!

    this is a great tutorial thanks, in ableton what alternate compressor do you recommend? is the stock ableton one any good to get the same result or any others like the waves ones? would love it if you could do this whole video in ableton lol as i find it hard to follow in other programs

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  8 місяців тому +1

      If you're still pretty new to plugins like compression, just keep it simple at first. Learn the stock Ableton compressor really well, and then maybe learn a second compressor that has a more specific tone (like Waves CLA-2A or CLA-76 for example). Keep it simple. There's no need to try and use a bunch of different compressors at first. I still tend to use the same 3 over and over again.

    For the punch compressor in this scenario, at 8:52 you mentioned the Attack should be slower. Did you mean shorter, as the Attack in that example is set to ~0.5ms, whereas you used a 1ms Attack in your "balanced" compressor. Nice video :)

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  Рік тому

      Thanks for pointing this out! I should’ve been more clear. The vintage style compressor I use for the “punch” compressor has a fast attack overall but my ears tell me it attacks the vocal in a different way than a stick compressor does.
      Basically, if I was using a stock compressor to emulate the vintage compressor, I doubt that I would want the attack setting to be as fast.
      I don’t like to be too meticulous with these technical things and I try to let my ears tell me what’s working, and I suppose that’s why I ended up being unclear on this topic.

      Yes, I played the guitar on this. If I remember correctly, I think it was drop d tuning. That “buzzy” note is the open low string tuned down to a D. The song is in the key of A.

    So there is nothing in the center of the stereo field?

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  2 роки тому +4

      Well technically yes because there are tracks like the guitar, keys, low octave vocal etc. that are down the middle. I’ve found that doing this “double take” Vocal with left/right panning only works for specific genres but this type of ambient folk is definitely one of them where this can work beautifully.

  • @sammon2481

    can you just copy and paste one vocal? so that they are the same?

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  Рік тому

      All that does is turn up the volume. It’s not necessarily bad to copy and paste a track, but the processing needs to be different for the copied version or it’ll just be louder and that also creates phase issues.
      This specific sound is very dependent on combining different vocal takes.

    Does Novo amor use auto tune??

    • @theindiemusiclab
      @theindiemusiclab  Рік тому

      I would be shocked if he doesn’t use tuning of some kind. Whether that’s Melodyne or AutoTune, or a combination of the two. either way, the fact that you even asked the question shows that it’s subtle on purpose and any tuning is added for the purpose of tightening up the vocal sound rather than adding any sort of obvious effect.
      It’s one of those things where you could record 20 takes and get every line virtually perfect in pitch, or you could record 5 takes and then make a couple minor tuning adjustments and save yourself a bunch of time and headache. I’ll take the latter approach every day of the week.
