Used to use a Silca frame pump with a campy head. Looked great on the bike. Not so good using it. Every so often the vavle would let the pressurized air from the tire back into the pump.. and launch the pump insides like a missile. What fun. My Silca track pump on the other hand is almost 40 years old and still going strong.
Super helpful for many I'm sure. Yeah, i personally take the mini with me. Even though it's not the easiest method. I've found that it never hits the psi I want. But easily gets me back home.

Has Ollie never used a pump before. Much, much easier if you put the valve at the top of the rotation rather than the bottom. Then you can lift the bike a little to seat it. Much better than messing around in the dirt.
I got a battery compressor from Halfords recently for £40, it fits Schrader and Presta valves and has digital pressure settings. A good deal in itself, even if the pressure readings might not be the most accurate. However, as a bonus it also came with a bottle cage mount, so in theory you could use your bike to carry it, not sure on how waterproof it is though. It also has a torch and you can charge things from it via a USB port. Really nifty, I can't remember the brand but these things are out there and it'll do your car tyres or a football etc no problem.
I have a mini pump that came with a frame clip that mounts behind a bottle cage. It always stays on the bike now, unless I have to use it. One less thing inside the back pockets. At home, I have a 38 gallon compressor (I also work on cars), but I always end up using my trusted track pump (less noisy), which I also bring with me in the car when I drive to the start of a ride.
Topeak Micro Rocket in the tool pod kit + two CO2's & a Lezyne trigger in the saddle bag. AND, I'm keeping a Lezyne track pump in the SUV not only for myself, but for friends & strangers on group rides at the trail head. There's a mini electric pump the size of a matchbox that's good for 2 fill-ups on 700c tires, but at $150, I'm not ready to commit to that yet.
I carry a non threaded CO2 cartridge inside of a reusable device. (and I always recycle the empty aluminum cartridge) I also carry a spare cartridge, just in case of a second flat. As for a floor pump, I have a 35+ year old Silca Track pump that won't die. I've replaced the leather main pump gasket once, and since I use tubes with unthreaded valves, the rubber chuck gaskets last for 10 years. Back in the olden days before CO2, I'd use a Silca frame pump.
I use a long pump (54cm) with an external gauge as I struggle to get to 85psi (6 bar) with the mini pump (as olli did since he only got to 40psi in 1:20) . Its also the cheapest and lightest option. all plastic, indestructible since I have it since 39 years now when I bought my Koga Miyata where is was clamped along the down tube in between the BB and the top tube. It now lives on my Roubaix and is fixed on with 2 releasable cable ties to the side of the down tube. I never leave home without it. At home is a track pump.
My mini-pump does have a short hose, and I find it easier to use with the wheel off the bike. I can hold one end of the pump against the spokes with one hand while pumping with the other, with the wheel flat on my lap. Much easier than Ollie's way in the video.
I miss the standard Frame Pump like it existed until the 90th… Easy to use , fills the tire quick and uses no space in your pocket. unfortunately the dont fit onto the newer frames… To me Minipumps are awkward pieces of sh*t. and it seems that Olli has not often used a Handpump. I would always turn the valve at top of the tire for inflating…
The ToPeak Turbo Morph series pumps are better. They're easier to pump with and more powerful. And are shorter and as portable as the old fashioned (Zéfal, etc.) frame pumps. And will fit most frames.

There are mini pumps available with two modes, first mode is a high volume mode, second one is a high pressure mode. Got one and it works a treat. My home pump is a 12V compressor, gets the job done.
Great vid Ollie, but you would always have the wheel off the bike and valve to the top standing and pumping especially if tubeless, don't freeze the fluid. Also CO2 allows you to remount a tubeless tire. Match pressure with the opposite tire by feel.
I am more interested in how they connect to the valve. I have a lezyne pump and it connects with a abs1 head and its impossible to screw it on or off without letting out all the air
Floor pump at home and the mini pump I carry with me on the bike is one where you can screw on a CO2 canister. It's the best of both worlds. I can use the mini pump to get a little bit of air into the tube to make it easy to mount inside the tyre, then use a CO2 canister to get it up to full pressure. As a last resort, if both of the CO2 canisters I carry with me fail then I can use the mini pump to get in enough pressure to get back on the road. Having said that, tyres are so good nowadays that punctures are getting rare. It's been well over a year since I've had to fix one on the side of the road.
To date, the ToPeak Morph series pumps are the most powerful of all the mechanical pumps there is. It handily beats Lezyne's Micro Floor, as well as any other portable pump.
Love the British humo(u)r. Nice bike, too. The track pump I bought is similar. It's called an Air Force Tier Three. The hookup is standard these days* but the gauge is at the top of the cylinder, where it's easy to read. * I prefer the action on my old pump. On it, you push the clamp down to lock the nozzle onto the stem. I have more strength in that direction than I do trying to pull up the handle while holding the nozzle tight onto the valve stem. Pushing the lever works WITH the nozzle-stem seal, rather than trying to pull it off.
Floor pump stays in the house, mini pump in the bag and go cycling. Have actually used my mini pump on my car once, took awhile but got me home. CO2 I would think suits more professional cyclists.
A lezyne Pocket drive goes up to 11 bar, the larger ones "only" go up to 6 bar, small chamber and small piston equals less strength required to achieve high pressure...
SILCA Track pump with the Hiro-chuck. Works flawlessly, very precise and made absolutely gorgeously. Bought one 6 years ago, never looked back apart for regret not buying it earlier.
For home use, if you are seriously considering buying a Topeak pump like that, just realize that for that kind of money you can also get a nice 10 bar / 145 PSI compressor.
I got a compressor when I first went tubeless ~2014. The problems with them as an option for most folks is they take up a lot of storage space, can't easily be chucked in the boot of the car, needs a power supply, take more time to setup, and crikey, are they ever noisy while they charge the tank to pressure. Fwiw still got mine a backup, but 99% of time more convenient to just use one of the floor pumps and maybe booster tank - if I was starting from scratch I'd just go for something like the Topeak floor pump Olly was using.
Newbie tip, rotate the wheel so that the air intake port is closer to the handles and not closer to the floor. It might make the hand held stuff easier. I really enjoyed this video bc I am in the market for a pump
Xiaomi portable compressor runs circles around any minipump you would bring on a ride and it fits a moderately sized saddlebag. It has enough charge to pump 3 16" car tyres from flat to 2,2bar and it weighs 480g. It is also USB rechargeable.
I carry both a mini pump and a CO2 inflator--because options. I ride late at night in and on the outskirts of a city. In that scenario (or if I'm tired near the end of a long ride) I'll likely use the CO2 because it's fast. The mini pump is there for all other times, or if two flats occur, or someone else needs a flat repair and my CO2 is expended.
I'm glad they haven't gone metric with those. Some channels pretend they are cutting edge and show you everything in metric, so we have to break out the conversion calculator. Good job Ollie. If you loan your mini pump out, don't plan on getting it back. 3 times I loaned mine out never to be seen again.
Coming from a country that does not use obsolete non-metric standards (like basically the whole world except USA, UK and Australia...), I think it's the other way round. A real pain in the ass having to convert from PSI to bar all the time... 😬
Another excellent alternative would be the Fumpa electric pump. Why specifically Fumpa? Because, unlike any other electric pump currently produced, it manages to inflate 28mm tyres to ca. 70psi is ca. 20 seconds! Thee cheaper counterparts (i.e., Xiaomi, etc.), for instance, take a few minutes to inflate same tyre to the same pressure. Possibly the main disadvantage of the Fumpa is the lack of weatherproofing.
I would like to use the CO2 canisters but every time I have used them, on Presta at least, the valve iced up and when I tried to unscrew the canister it also unscrewed the inner valve and released the air. I only carry Lezyne Pocket Drive mini pump now. It's tiny but packs a punch and because it has a flexi hose it does not put too much strain on the valve as well.
I had the same issue with CO2. Now I make a point of tightening the valve core on all new tubes. Also, after CO2 inflation, I drizzle a little water over the valve to melt the ice before removing the CO2. No issues since.
On market is another (not popular yet) option: battery powered pump. Pros: pump without effort to desired PSI, smaller than standard pump, most of it has headlight build in and powerbank ;) Cons: heavy (0.5-1kg) and not fastest. Pumps only a few tyres (depends on battery size) before discharge.
CO2 for on-road repairs, and mini-pump for backup (in case you use up all of your CO2 cartridges). Then when you are back home or have access to a floor pump, deflate the tire (let out the CO2) and re-inflate with air. This will prevent the tire from quickly going flat as the smaller CO2 molecules permeate through the inner tube. Oh, and when using a mini-pump without a hose, it's much easier if you remove the wheel from the bike (less danger of damaging the valve stem also)
CO2 molecules are not smaller unless something weird is going on: take an O2 molecule and add a C to make CO2, nitrogen is (marginally) less dense than Oxygen too.
@@tomholdsworth6055 Yeah, I don't know the exact reason, but experience shows that a CO2 inflated tire will lose pressure much more quickly than one inflated with standard air. A Nitrogen inflated tire will retain pressure even longer.
For me I carry CO2 x 2 because I have yet to get more than two punctures on a 1-3 hour ride. When I do metrics and centuries I carry the CO2 plus another tube (3) total, a patch kit/boot and a small mini pump. I can only get 40-50 psi from mini pump however, so only enough psi to get me to a floor pump at best. I’d rather not have to use the mini pump but hey at least it’s better than nothing!
I was happy to see Ollie using the very same pump I have - I always have a Topeak Road Morph G with me. It’s mounted on the seat tube, and I keep the down tube mount for a water bottle.
Like in this video I use Topeak pumps and find them very good. I have an old Road Morph and hold it securely between my feet when pumping this allow both hand to be used and speeds things up.
Carry a tiny Blackburn pocket rocket pump on a bracket under one of the waterbottle cages. Gets the tire going with some air, then get to final pressure with CO2.
I used to carry a dual action mini pump until one time I slipped and snapped off my valve stem. Now I use a small hand pump with a hose that still fits in my jersey. It sticks out of the pocket but it's still comfortable.
It would be nice to do a comparison of various leading track pumps and their advantages/disadvantages. I have both an SKS Renncompressor and a Silca classic track pump.
Bought a hand-pump (no not from a heathen shop..) It had a pressure gauge that died twice and at that point it was hard to find the right pressure to make it solid.

actually.... i've 3 pumps, the track pump at home, obviously. The mini pump for rides near the city, and the "hand" pump (pump a little bit bigger, with feet stand and presasure reader) for rides that are over 150km, if I got flat I can "easily" return to the ideal presure. I go with the hand pump not in the frame but in a String Bag (with food and two inner tubes).
At home I use a battery powered pump rather than a track pump. I reckon it would get to 60 psi in 10 secs with no effort at all. Added bonus it it will do car tyres too.
Since I have a folding bike. I call a car when I get a flat. Otherwise there is an emergency mini mini pump in the frame if I’m stranded. But this vid made me buy a better mini pump for extended rides.
An inflator's capacity is its 'Compression ratio x 1 Bar. A 7:1 comp ratio will get to 7 bar, 100 psi. A good ex-cyclist ( Greg LeMond ) will get the tyre to a ridable 50 psi with his lungs. 🙂 What I notice is 'gravel bike' 30-622 tyres are the same pressure as 32-597. This brings my 26 x 1 1/4" back into fashion.
Tubeless tyres for me - CO2 in the saddle bag, mini pump in the back pocket, track pump at home, air compressor for mounting tyres - CO2 i have never used on my own bike just given one to another cyclist!
GCN Tech... what about... FUMPA PUMP or devices like this mi compressor down side they lack of power to clinch the bead in case of ... but then what mini pump does... this mini compressor stuff are rechargeable but do they worth the $$? compared to CO2 or mini pumps?
Frame pump of course and a patch kit. CO2 cartridges are the worst in everyway except speed, burn your fingers single use, disposal issues. If you didn't find the cause of the puncture which happen frequently you are SOL. Mini pumps easy to carry that's about it.
Fwiw - better off avoiding CO2 cannisters. They are expensive, bad for the environment, they limit sealant choice, loose convenience/speed rapidly [1] and they're heavy [2]. Only time they make sense is for time critical situations or where walking back/third-party recovery isn't a massive pita. Best option, particulary if doing any sort of off-road distances, is carrying a good micro-floor pump like the Topeak Morph Olly demoed - (their Mini Morph or Lezyne's Micro Floor Drive range or similiar can also be good options depending on tyre volumes and pressures needed). [1] When it's cold, raining, and the supply of cannisters you were carrying is exhausted - and you're either struggling with a teeny tiny pocket pump - or faced with walking back - or trying to arrange recovery in the middle of mobile phone not-spot - CO2 cannisters as a convenient and quick method to inflate tyres will seem like a very poor life decision. [2] With the emergency (and not very effective) teeny tiny pocket pump, cannister adapter and few cannisters it quickly ends up weighing more than just taking a good pump in the first place.
And , don't forget, the co2 will leak out of the tire in about a day. You don't have another flat, it's just the fact that the co2 leaks out of the tire in about a day.
So my problem is with the track pump. Unless I get somebody else to hold it straight on the presta valve, it twists with the hose as I pump and bends the valve! Tried all ways but always impossible when alone. Had to replace inner tubes due to that after bending valve (off in one case). I have a basic track pump but it seems pants and I wont use it by myself for fear of breaking the presta valve. I hope other more expensive track pumps do not have this issue as I will be trading up shortly.
After 50 years of cycling = a dozen frame pumps and 4 track pumps [no CO 2] and 9 mini pocket pumps and 3 electric compressor [small to really large] and 3 [ 20 to 24 volt] battery pumps. My favorite home use is battery [24 volt] Snow Joe pump. What? The search never ends!
Not sure about Ollie but I don't flat enough to make a CO2 canister strategy bad for the environment. On the other hand, ruining a valve stem and ripping a tire with a mini-pump can be quite wasteful.
There is one concern with minipumps and tubeless tyres, though. The minipump can unseat the valve quite easily with the movement of the head and the valve together. Usually this can be fixed by shaking the wheel and push some sealant around the valve, but this is a painful experience to be had honestly.
I don't think they sped up some of that footage. I just believe Ollie is that fast with the "minipump" in real life. It is one of the hidden benefits of doing a PhD in chemistry.

I wish I could have a puncture near a bench with a floor pump nearby. That doesn't usually happen to me...

Screw on head pumps rarely comes with valve core tool integrated and it baffles me why it's not a common sense. Like, wtf?

I love my Fumpa. I do a lot of mixed tarmac and gravel and it allows me to easily change pressures.

Which mini pump is Ollie using? Trying to purchase one at the minute but not sure which is best!!
I'm glad they haven't gone metric with those. Some channels pretend they are cutting edge and show you everything in metric, so we have to break out the conversion calculator. Good job Ollie. If you loan your mini pump out, don't plan on getting it back. 3 times I loaned mine out never to be seen again.
Coming from a country that does not use obsolete non-metric standards (like basically the whole world except USA, UK and Australia...), I think it's the other way round. A real pain in the ass having to convert from PSI to bar all the time... 😬
Cycling is one of those weird mixed activities where you pump your 30mm tires to 60 psi.
Another excellent alternative would be the Fumpa electric pump. Why specifically Fumpa? Because, unlike any other electric pump currently produced, it manages to inflate 28mm tyres to ca. 70psi is ca. 20 seconds! Thee cheaper counterparts (i.e., Xiaomi, etc.), for instance, take a few minutes to inflate same tyre to the same pressure.
Possibly the main disadvantage of the Fumpa is the lack of weatherproofing.
I would like to use the CO2 canisters but every time I have used them, on Presta at least, the valve iced up and when I tried to unscrew the canister it also unscrewed the inner valve and released the air. I only carry Lezyne Pocket Drive mini pump now. It's tiny but packs a punch and because it has a flexi hose it does not put too much strain on the valve as well.
I had the same issue with CO2. Now I make a point of tightening the valve core on all new tubes. Also, after CO2 inflation, I drizzle a little water over the valve to melt the ice before removing the CO2. No issues since.
@@bg42bg I've done that and still had issues so now instead of taking canisters and a pump (just in case) I just take the pump.

On market is another (not popular yet) option: battery powered pump.
Pros: pump without effort to desired PSI, smaller than standard pump, most of it has headlight build in and powerbank ;)
Cons: heavy (0.5-1kg) and not fastest. Pumps only a few tyres (depends on battery size) before discharge.
CO2 for on-road repairs, and mini-pump for backup (in case you use up all of your CO2 cartridges). Then when you are back home or have access to a floor pump, deflate the tire (let out the CO2) and re-inflate with air. This will prevent the tire from quickly going flat as the smaller CO2 molecules permeate through the inner tube. Oh, and when using a mini-pump without a hose, it's much easier if you remove the wheel from the bike (less danger of damaging the valve stem also)
CO2 molecules are not smaller unless something weird is going on: take an O2 molecule and add a C to make CO2, nitrogen is (marginally) less dense than Oxygen too.
@@tomholdsworth6055 Yeah, I don't know the exact reason, but experience shows that a CO2 inflated tire will lose pressure much more quickly than one inflated with standard air. A Nitrogen inflated tire will retain pressure even longer.
For me I carry CO2 x 2 because I have yet to get more than two punctures on a 1-3 hour ride. When I do metrics and centuries I carry the CO2 plus another tube (3) total, a patch kit/boot and a small mini pump.
I can only get 40-50 psi from mini pump however, so only enough psi to get me to a floor pump at best. I’d rather not have to use the mini pump but hey at least it’s better than nothing!
A tire air compressor is my go too air pump ... I set the pressure connect and boom usually about 5 secs and I’m good
I was happy to see Ollie using the very same pump I have - I always have a Topeak Road Morph G with me. It’s mounted on the seat tube, and I keep the down tube mount for a water bottle.

Like in this video I use Topeak pumps and find them very good. I have an old Road Morph and hold it securely between my feet when pumping this allow both hand to be used and speeds things up.

Carry a tiny Blackburn pocket rocket pump on a bracket under one of the waterbottle cages. Gets the tire going with some air, then get to final pressure with CO2.
I have that exact frame pump and it works really slick for road tires and the gauge is nice for an inexperienced rider like me. A little slow for MTB.
I used to carry a dual action mini pump until one time I slipped and snapped off my valve stem. Now I use a small hand pump with a hose that still fits in my jersey. It sticks out of the pocket but it's still comfortable.
It would be nice to do a comparison of various leading track pumps and their advantages/disadvantages. I have both an SKS Renncompressor and a Silca classic track pump.

If you're going to use the CO 2 canister on tubles, use a 12 oz cartridge. It'll give you around sixty PSI depending on the size of the tire.
Lezyne Carbon Road Drive. Screws onto the valve core, which is itself screwed into the valve. Unscrew and bang 🤯💥

It had a pressure gauge that died twice and at that point it was hard to find the right pressure to make it solid.

I take a mini pump on any long ride and a patch kit. I have fixed flats on a trail or road several times and helped another cyclist with a flat once.

all the force from pumping goes right into the base of the stem
actually.... i've 3 pumps, the track pump at home, obviously. The mini pump for rides near the city, and the "hand" pump (pump a little bit bigger, with feet stand and presasure reader) for rides that are over 150km, if I got flat I can "easily" return to the ideal presure.
I go with the hand pump not in the frame but in a String Bag (with food and two inner tubes).

I agree track pump is best. Mini pump goes with me but hasn't been used for years, hope it stays like that.

At home I use a battery powered pump rather than a track pump. I reckon it would get to 60 psi in 10 secs with no effort at all. Added bonus it it will do car tyres too.
Since I have a folding bike. I call a car when I get a flat. Otherwise there is an emergency mini mini pump in the frame if I’m stranded.
But this vid made me buy a better mini pump for extended rides.
I have a mini pump strapped on my bike frame. If I get a flat tire, I just replace the inner tube, fill with air that is enough to bring me home.
An inflator's capacity is its 'Compression ratio x 1 Bar. A 7:1 comp ratio will get to 7 bar, 100 psi.
A good ex-cyclist ( Greg LeMond ) will get the tyre to a ridable 50 psi with his lungs. 🙂
What I notice is 'gravel bike' 30-622 tyres are the same pressure as 32-597. This brings my 26 x 1 1/4" back into fashion.
Tubeless tyres for me - CO2 in the saddle bag, mini pump in the back pocket, track pump at home, air compressor for mounting tyres - CO2 i have never used on my own bike just given one to another cyclist!
GCN Tech... what about... FUMPA PUMP or devices like this mi compressor down side they lack of power to clinch the bead in case of ... but then what mini pump does... this mini compressor stuff are rechargeable but do they worth the $$? compared to CO2 or mini pumps?
What matters to be efficient is the internal volume, so if is short it must be a wider diameter.

Frame pump of course and a patch kit. CO2 cartridges are the worst in everyway except speed, burn your fingers single use, disposal issues. If you didn't find the cause of the puncture which happen frequently you are SOL. Mini pumps easy to carry that's about it.
Got a mini pump at the frame on the road bike, it works fine up to 35/40 psi, and is there to drive me to gas station 🤟 at the xc the ps is enough.

Fwiw - better off avoiding CO2 cannisters. They are expensive, bad for the environment, they limit sealant choice, loose convenience/speed rapidly [1] and they're heavy [2]. Only time they make sense is for time critical situations or where walking back/third-party recovery isn't a massive pita. Best option, particulary if doing any sort of off-road distances, is carrying a good micro-floor pump like the Topeak Morph Olly demoed - (their Mini Morph or Lezyne's Micro Floor Drive range or similiar can also be good options depending on tyre volumes and pressures needed).
[1] When it's cold, raining, and the supply of cannisters you were carrying is exhausted - and you're either struggling with a teeny tiny pocket pump - or faced with walking back - or trying to arrange recovery in the middle of mobile phone not-spot - CO2 cannisters as a convenient and quick method to inflate tyres will seem like a very poor life decision.
[2] With the emergency (and not very effective) teeny tiny pocket pump, cannister adapter and few cannisters it quickly ends up weighing more than just taking a good pump in the first place.

And , don't forget, the co2 will leak out of the tire in about a day. You don't have another flat, it's just the fact that the co2 leaks out of the tire in about a day.
So my problem is with the track pump. Unless I get somebody else to hold it straight on the presta valve, it twists with the hose as I pump and bends the valve! Tried all ways but always impossible when alone. Had to replace inner tubes due to that after bending valve (off in one case). I have a basic track pump but it seems pants and I wont use it by myself for fear of breaking the presta valve. I hope other more expensive track pumps do not have this issue as I will be trading up shortly.
After 50 years of cycling = a dozen frame pumps and 4 track pumps [no CO 2] and 9 mini pocket pumps and 3 electric compressor [small to really large] and 3 [ 20 to 24 volt] battery pumps. My favorite home use is battery [24 volt] Snow Joe pump. What? The search never ends!
Not sure about Ollie but I don't flat enough to make a CO2 canister strategy bad for the environment. On the other hand, ruining a valve stem and ripping a tire with a mini-pump can be quite wasteful.

So CO2 cylinders are not safe to be used with hookless rims as you can exceed the 73psi limit, especially with smaller tyres.
Some mini pumps come with a co2 valve so you have to 2 pumping methods in 1.
Mini pumps are great. But the question is which one 😉? I like the Lezyne rocket
They sell co2 valves with reliable pressure gauges built in.
I use ruzer neutron, small and suitable for my low weekly bike miles if ever I need to use it 😅 🙃 🤔 😬

There is one concern with minipumps and tubeless tyres, though.
The minipump can unseat the valve quite easily with the movement of the head and the valve together. Usually this can be fixed by shaking the wheel and push some sealant around the valve, but this is a painful experience to be had honestly.
You can get minipumps that have a flexible hose to avoid that, mine is stored inside the air chamber so it doesn't take up any extra space.

I don't think they sped up some of that footage. I just believe Ollie is that fast with the "minipump" in real life. It is one of the hidden benefits of doing a PhD in chemistry.
