Pole Spearing Amberjacks W MAKO Carbon Fiber Spear

  • July trip to South Carolina, tried using a MAKO Carbon Fiber Pole Spear on a few fish including Amberjack. I was using a 3-prong tip which is good for smaller fish generally. This spear is fast and strong. Both fish were over 3 ft long and about 25-30 lbs.
    Here's a link to the spear:

      SpectralEV Using scuba gear while spearfishing is illegal m8. He keeps saying he's commercially fishing but commercial fisherman have a target species, he just hopped in there and started shooting anything down there. The only good he did was shoot the lionfish. It's pretty obvious that he's not practising commercial spearfishing cause there are no other spearos down with him to maximise how much they catch. I'd bet he just tagged along with these fishermen so he can have a dive at these wrecks.

    All these idiots complaining about how evil it is to spearfish on scuba, and yes, it’s legal in my state, as well. They have no idea of the actual skill and difficulty involved and how selective it is vs cast and reel (i.e. no by-catch, you only kill what you mean to kill).
    IMO, it’s much harder to hunt with pole spear on scuba than freedive (much harder to get fish within range without spooking).
    Good job, man!
    I’m just about to upgrade my spear and I’m on the fence between this pole spear (good price) and the Headhunter Nomad. Can I get your opinion?

      @Speedospearo  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the support. I am a big fan of MAKO and I have had good luck with the MAKO Carbon pole spear AND their upgraded CF spear with a roller. The roller is really pretty cool and you can add the resting hook on either model. I'm honestly not that familiar with the headhunter, I know they make good gear, but it is my impression that they are way more expensive than MAKO.
      If you are going to pole spear fish over about 10 lbs, I definitely recommend the Innerlock SP-3 slip tip. It is expensive, but the unique design works very well. I have used it a bunch in the Bahamas on decent size groupers and hog fish and jacks. and it has held up very well.

      I'm not sure how you have determined that the use of tank is unsustainable? As for using the pole spear... @@petroszouberis3213 As a diver I regularly see massive clumps of fishing line tangled in the water. Lures and lead litter many fishing areas. Fish regularly die after being foul hooked by traditional fishing. They even oftentimes die after breaking off of a line and having a hook stuck in their throat/mouth. Even the stress from fighting and stress from a sudden change in pressure change kills many fish plus non-target species can't be filtered out and can die due to these issues. A responsible spearo only shoots what is legal and eats what he/she kills. The only fish that are ever disturbed are those we aim to harvest. We don't trash the water and we don't waste fish. There's also a legitimate risk of drowning since law usually dictates that tanks are illegal while spearing. As you can see by many of the comments here most of us disapprove of tanks even when they are legal. Anyway, I'm not trash talking bait fisherman. I enjoy traditional methods of fishing myself and I'm not trying to attack you. I just want to clarify that spearfishing isn't what many people make it seem. Spearos are treated like second class fisherman but it can be argued that we're more ethical and more environmentally friendly. I'd also like to add that because of our second class status the law in most of the US only allows us to hunt "trash" fish like carp, sucker, catfish, and gar. One last thing, fish are still very skittish and getting close enough to get a shot requires good stealth skills.
      I hope that clears things up a bit. Take care!

      Lionfish are an invasive exotic species in this area. They are good to eat and it is beneficial to take them. thanks for the question.
