That is so sad to hear about John's passing, and you guys made me tear up with the respect you showed when you spoke about him and his family. I am sure you were hoping he would sail with you one day, now he will always be sailing with you!!
No sweat in putting up the AG1 ad mate. It makes you a bit of money and we've seen it on all other sailing channels. Keep up the good job on the refit!
It was really touching to hear you both honor John and now his dream will live on with you and your adventure. He will always be part of this boat and I'm sure where ever he is he's looking down on you and will always be part of this amazing story.
Wonderful tribute to a great man. He must have discovered your talents and sincerity as well as your meticulous attention to detail long before we met you. I think everyone on this channel would vouch for you and and not question whether this boat will sail again or sit in the corner of a yard waiting to be given to someone else 25 years later. He seemed to have known you better than we did. I am sure you will do him justice and will do a great job with your plans and finish the project. You better I am sure he is watching now and will watch every little detail until she is splashed and maybe even beyond. God Rest His Soul.
Nice Tribute to John guys..very touching. Duracell couldn't have gone to more deserving people Matt and Janni.I"m sure you will make him proud. Great work
Although I don't know anything about boats and have very rarely been on one, your videos convey a sense of peace and tranquility to me. Perhaps in another life, I was a sailor. Thank you. Greetings from Portugal
Thoughtful and touching tribute to John. I hope he was able to see some of the progress you guys have made. I’m sure it would have brought him joy. Keep it up. You’re crushing it!
We are in our 60s, we have loved sailing and sail oat racing all our lives. This boat has proven it's merit. I can not say we have followed from day one, but we have watched with interest for a long time as Duracell fueled excitement as we followed a man race her and love the adventures so much he disqualified himself from a race when no one would have known he had taken help to save the boat. That boat is not only a legend, but it is a dream of anyone who has ever stood on a shore looking out to see what was possible. I can still remember the first time I felt the wind fill the sails of a small sailing dingy in the waters of Cape Cod 58 years ago and wonder if Mike felt the same way when he got his first wind on Duracell. You have on your hands more than a boat. And this build will honor her legacy.
So sad to hear that John has passed, that was a thoughtful eulogy for John. I did not know he had achieved so much on Duracell, what an outstanding legacy, it truly deserves to be acknowledged!
Excellent tribute to John. I’m sure his passion for this boat will live on! As for the addition of a work space-it’ll need the envy of every cruiser you meet. Just remember that every sailor needs a vice😉
So very sorry to hear about John. May his dream be fulfilled through the two of you. Every adventure you have, he will be by your side enjoying, guiding and helping you on your way...
What a sincere remembrance to John, and his family. You are honoring his gift with your skill and diligence in redesigning and refitting the boat with such care. Your videos are just right in terms of details and workmanship along with other related interests. I look forward every week to the new episode, thank you and best wishes as you live our your dreams.
Thanks to John being so generous not only has it changed your lives its giving so many others like myself following the journey a lot of enjoyment. I loved hearing more about his adventures and passion for the boat, What a legend , Thanks John
You guys are great together. I feel Matt is great at explaining things, and every video I'm always impressed with Yanni's interview skills to bring that out of Matt! Awesome how you guys bring the best out of each other
There is something so satisfying and relaxing in watching you lay down the beads of thickened epoxy and inserting the panels between the little blocks to support them. 😁
John knew who the right owners for the boat were ,the decision was a long and calculated process as a couple you guys were the perfect people and suit the criteria with the skills to ensure such a historic and legendary boat lives on and goes back in the water ,,he passed away a happy man ,,,RIP
Greetings from Canada. Love this project! Gosh, so sorry to hear about John passing away. I was hoping he'd get an outing on Duracell with you. Nice reminiscence of him. Take those feelings with you when your out offshore. She is special boat and this is a great project. Thanks for sharing.
What a nice tribute to John. I am sure that he Knows that he made the right choice by giving you two Duracell. I really like the workbench idea. It will be used a lot on board.
Lovely tribute to the previous owner of Duracell. I’m sure he was very excited to hear of your plans and see what you had accomplished prior to his passing. He will be with you in spirit when you splash her again! What a wonderful legacy Duracell has. Big sailing shoes to fill! In her new life being more of a (fast) cruiser, Duracell will wear her history proud. Nice to see her get a new lease on life and carry the awesome stories forward. Cheers you guys! Love the VLOGS! Keep ‘em coming please! Doug.
Nice to have a large interior work space. I have to use our galley counter which is ok but not ideal. Hopefully you see enough progress each week . It's really showing up in the videos. Keep up the great work.❤❤❤❤
Great tribute to John. I love watching the love and effort you put into rebuilding this boat. Put your in roll adds back on. I'm happy to watch them to help you get a little more money.
I am looking to upgrade my 27 footer to a 32 footer this year. Your project is the only non-wooden boat channel that I immediately watch. Thanks for the videos 🇫🇮
Sorry to hear about John's passing, he sounds like a great person. I do think the work bench is a great idea, how many times have you needed space to fix something or need that comfortable spot to edit? I feel you will love this 1 area when the need arises.
This was a most touching video this week, so many things happening, it was quite the journey. Well done on the ad, I'm sure that was nerve wracking ;) Very nice words and tributes to John, very moving and very appropriate. Sending good energy from the Emerald Isle......Neil
Sorry to hear about John's passing. I'm happy to know that his dreams are being adopted and fulfilled by you two. And also the fact that you are sharing them with the rest of us. I think that having a permanent indoor work bench is a fantastic idea. There will always be a space to do projects and be able to leave them out and come back another time to finish them. I expect you've already considered what to do with the leading corner on the bench top so it doesn't become a health hazard to people walking by. Thanks for the video 😁😁👍👍👍
thanks, Jim. Yes, there are stringers that are right below the leading corner so you wouldn't walk there anyway...but I'm also going to round that corner :)
@@TheDuracellProject In that case, you can disregard the second part of my comment. haha Although, where you walk and where you get tossed can be two different things. 😂
I would advise you to not turn off commercials during your video. Even though you’re bringing sponsors, that doesn’t change anything. Keep commercials as a part of your weekly videos and bring on the sponsors. That’s all OK.
I automatically give a thumbs down to everyone who places an ad in their UA-cam film. No exceptions! It's the start of constant and annoying commercial breaks on UA-cam. In honor of the previous owner John I took it out again for the first time.
Sad to hear about John's passing; your own video obituary at the end was moving enough so that I googled him to read the whole thing. Probably also a testament to how engaging your channel and your journey is.
Workbench 👍 You won't regret that decision for a minute. I had a mid-range vise (ca 15 kg) mounted on an L-shaped, very sturdily built beech-ply base, and a carpenter's front-cleat driven by a handle-less wheel on the bench to fix the vise-base to the tabletop. That setup was well sturdy enough to bend sheetmetal or tubing material with long levers and press bushings safely. Due to it's removability there was no vice when underway, reducing hazards inside a sailboat moving in wind'n waves. Carpenter's cleat turned out as a blessing also since first time installed: clamped the pasta maker, a handturned mixer for bread-dough, a beechply mounted can-opener and things like that there - besides the boatbuilder's equipment from light drill-press to mill- and small lathe-fixture to a modified Sailrite-base and the usual carpenter's use. Duracell-donor John did absolutely know who to pass his dream-boat on to, that's for sure. Dream on guys, there might be nothing better You can do to respect his generosity. Thanks for sharing!
Instead of melamine on your workbench, you could go with a wood top. Maybe even something like butcher block. That way if it gets beat up you could sand it and refinish it. Love what you're doing!!! Keep up the great work!!!
My favourite sound is a leaking bag that stops leaking and full vacuum is drawn! I'm so impressed that you can bag almost anything. I just work on my bench and bag there.
Great tribute to the precious owner John First thing I thought when you said about the workbench was putting a roller shutter door on the front from ceiling to bench top 🤔 that way you could shut it and hide anything you didn’t want to look at for a couple of days.
Years ago, when I was in boat design school, I designed a 35 ft steel, double-ended cutter. In the forward cabin, it had a library on one side and a work bench on the other. The work bench was long enough to be used as a makeshift berth.

Oh man, that work station NEEDS A PORT LIGHT on that wall so bad. Imagine sitting on the stool whittling on something and looking out the port hole at the weather etc!! Please put one in. It will make me very happy LOL.

It's so sad with John.....I think he will always have a place in your hearts and therefore on the boat. I have a question of personal technical interest. What possibilities do the relatively rigid installations (frames and also in the longitudinal direction) have to compensate for the torsion of the boat. It's incredible what solid structures can be made from sandwich panels. Thanks for sharing the build progress and your experiences. Good luck, health and fun in your further work.
Are you going to put a vertical handrail down from the ceiling in-line with the corner of the table that sticks out past the bulkhead? It could stop you bashing into the sharp corner, plus more hand holds are good(er)

Very nice tribute
