How to Dehydrate and Rehydrate Mushrooms
Prep Time: 15 Min Total Time: 15 Min
Ingredients
Edible Mushrooms of your choice
Water or broth for rehydrating
Instructions
How to Dehydrate Mushrooms
1. Preparation: Clean and trim the mushrooms, removing any dirt or debris. Slice them into approximately 1/4-inch
thick pieces. You may chop them if preferred.
2. Dehydrating Process: Set the dehydrator to 125 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius). Put mushrooms on
trays in a single layer. Allow the mushrooms to dehydrate until crispy once cooled to room temperature. Check
for dryness by attempting to bend a slice; it should snap, not fold.
3. Conditioning and Storing: Conditioning helps to ensure that all moisture is evenly distributed within the
dehydrated mushrooms, reducing the risk of spoilage. Place the mushrooms in an airtight container, leaving
some room at the top. Seal the container and let it sit for 4-7 days. Shake it gently daily to redistribute any
remaining moisture. If you see signs of moisture or pieces stick, put them in the dehydrator again for a couple of
hours.
4. Storage: Once properly conditioned, store the dehydrated mushrooms in an airtight container in a cool, dark
place. They can last up to a year or more if stored correctly.
Rehydrating Mushrooms
1. Preparation: Place the desired amount of dehydrated mushrooms in a bowl.
2. Rehydration: Pour enough water or broth over the mushrooms to fully submerge them. Give them a quick stir.
Allow them to soak for about 15-30 minutes.
3. Draining: After rehydrating, drain the mushrooms using a fine mesh strainer or by blotting them gently with a
paper towel. (If you are adding them to soups or stews with enough liquid, no rehydrating is needed.)
4. Usage: Your mushrooms are now ready to use in soups, stews, stir-fry, and more.
