Kohler Niedecken single Handle Shower repair instructions. Step by step instructions for removing your Niedecken. By Plumbing Parts Plus West Allis, WI.
Plumbing Parts Plus was a pleasure to work with!!! Highly suggest utilizing them if possible! Install was a breeze, and he had valuable insight on how to put it back together!
This video saved my day. This entire tutorial is THE best source of information on a Kohler Niedecken faucet, on the entire internet. Thank you for posting Glen!
Thanks for the video. Mine was leaking from the shower-head and after I opened it up leaked from out from the cover. After watching I was able to mickey mouse with spare rubber till the parts get here. We have hot-water heat so having the water off for an extended period is not an option during winter.
It's so frustrating that most of these handles can be fixed with a rubber washer but this old thing is a $120 repair... I'm just going to wait until I do my shower replacement and update. Thanks for the info.
Excellent video! I wish I had found it before I worked on mine. Fortunately we have a hardware store in Wyoming Mi. (Godwin Hardware} that has the parts and advise for anything you can think of hardware related. The only thing they could not fix was the stem but it was still serviceable with a new yoke. Their tool was too worn to get the jam nut out. Thanks to Jim Walsh for the suggestion of making a tool out of 1/2" steel pipe for when the stem finally gives out.
great video - thanks for taking the time and effort to do it - great detail - i have two of these in a duplex i work on in wauwatosa - so will be taking both handles in to ppp plumbing to have bushings and gear changed -- kind of a thanks for the video -and save me pulling more hair out
Awesome video!! Thanks for doing it. I do have a question. If you turn the hot water on all the way will it get steaming hot? Provided the water heater is set hot enough.
Would add one more thing. I followed your instructions and wound up with very little hot water. Round cold square hot. Problem was that original input hot and cold were plumbed in reverse. So be sure and identify which is hot and which is cold. Simply open shut off slightly and then felt where hot was coming from.
I have this exact one. Ordered new yoke and seats.Assembled exactly like this... no water will come outof my shower head. What could I have done wrong? Tried everything with the yoke, flip flopped hot/cold,the plungers and flush in the new seats Water flies through when nothing is attached. So I'm sure it's not a pipe issue. Something in the yoke/plunger/seat is blocking the water flow but I cannot figure it :/
I have the same issue as Mudders. I had the spindle & yoke replaced. Now I only get luke warm water. I backed the adjustment screw out and it only helped slightly. The water is hot without the unit in the wall and was before the repair. I am going to try new seats and maybe plungers next. Any other ideas?
Kohler also in those years sold the Shasta mixing valve (replaced in 1973 by the Centura), which functions similar to the Delta 600 series. But these two were on the decline after Kohler introduced the "Rite-Temp" pressure-balance valves in 1971. I'd like to think Kohler discontinued the Niedecken mixing valve after around 1982.
Good luck finding the specialty tool. It is discontinued and sold out everywhere online. Kohler doesn't have it, nor any plumber stores online. If anyone has ANY idea where to get one, that'd be great info. I'm at the point where I'm thinking about how to make the tool...
Had mine rebuilt as you showed. It still leaked between the nut and stem even when completely tightened. The shop I went to said sometimes this happens, bring it back and they replaced the packing a second time. It finally stopped leaking when I had tightened it to the point where it is just a bit uncomfortable to turn, but it’s no longer leaking. Could I add some fibrous packing on top of the graphite to reduce the amount of tightening needed? Any other ideas or advice would be helpful. Thanks!
Hello, Thanks for the video! We have this model, first one you worked on. We had dripping and took the stem in to be repacked. Worked great for a while. Now our problem is the hot/cold mix, just not getting hot. Would that be the seats that we need to replace? or the yoke, or both? Would be so grateful for an answer! Thank You!
If the unit has not been worked on in the last 15-20 years, it is most likely need to be rebuilt. That would be a stem and yoke replacement . Please call 414-321-8570 ask for Glen
Just spent three hours with one of these and it still won't shut off totally plus I have zero pressure. Well at least I know now how the water temp is mixed.
This is great information the problem is I just discovered that my Kohler need a can shower valve must be older than 1936 even though my house was built in 1940 because the distance between the hot and cold for the yoke is wider on mine than the part 30092. Help. i’ve taken this thing apart three times and I just want to fix it once and for all.
GLEN KANCZEWSKI Well I know that the 3092 would not fit the two stems were too close together to go into the valve body and according to Koehler 3092 is the yoke for the tub fixture and the shower one is 30094.
I replaced the three washers as you suggest but now the hot water leaks. When I shut the water off the cold shuts off completely but hot water stays running (slowly). Any ideas?

Thank you for posting this. I would have replaced the unit.
Any tips for getting the handle off?? Mine is stuck. Can’t pop it off.
Awesome video!! Thanks for doing it. I do have a question. If you turn the hot water on all the way will it get steaming hot? Provided the water heater is set hot enough.
yes.
Yes... for that matter you should instead buy a "Rite-Temp" faucet if you like Kohler so much.
I replaced almost everything as you did but I am still having trouble getting hot water. Anything that I am missing?
Would add one more thing. I followed your instructions and wound up with very little hot water. Round cold square hot. Problem was that original input hot and cold were plumbed in reverse. How does the regulating screw on the cover works? Is the yoke supposed to rest on it? Does it matter?
Does anyone know of any after market trim kits for this?

It wont hurt to add more packing, but that will become little by little easier to turn. The more you use the better it will be
Thank you!

The one I see he's showing us is from the 1948-1963 period.

Please send a picture of your unit to plumbingpartsplus8815@gmail and I will get back to you
I gave Kohler called called today and they told me it’s a 30094
30092 and 30094 are the same just packaged differently
GLEN KANCZEWSKI Well I know that the 3092 would not fit the two stems were too close together to go into the valve body and according to Koehler 3092 is the yoke for the tub fixture and the shower one is 30094.
Send me a picture I'll look at it in the morning

The unit most likely is going to need to be rebuilt. It sounds like the stem and yoke are starting to ware.
Our shower head is leacking and we have this same unit how could we fix this problem or is the leack caused by something else???
@Jason Corzantes did you ever fix your leak? We have this unit and a leaky showerhead too.
To Joe Doyle you will need a special tool. Glen from Plumbing Parts Plus
GLEN & KEN KANCZEWSKI do you have the name or part number for that tool?
Is very old
