  • The greatest generation of the west Indian team was coming to an end.
    malcolm marshall
    Ambrose
    Michal Holding
    Joel Garner
names that had terrified the world till now
A team that had won 2 world cups,
uncountable matches and made nearly unsurmountable records in it's run.
    was coming to an end
and with it, was coming to an end the illustrious career of Vivian Richards.
    the year was 1988
and Pakistani team was touring west indies
under the captaincy of Imran khan
armed with 2 new young bowlers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis
what followed was a test series that has been argued to be the best series ever played
    Nail-biting matches
    thrilling ending
tempers and tantrums and sledges being thrown around every which way.
    and with that
    came the final dust up
an epic show down between the west Indian captain and the young Wasim akarm.
which followed a failure in leadership, infact a betrayal from Imran khan.

I lived in Barbados in 1988 and I can tell you we were so scared of losing this match. We all had transistor radios up to our heads with fingers crossed in Bridgetown. It was the stiffest competition any team gave us. To be fair Wasim was right to have a go though. The story is really funny, but Imran was smart to let Wasim sort it out himself. I think Wasim realised that he was so skilful that he let the ball do the sledging. These were the 2 great teams of 80's.

Imran Khan's protege was Wasim Akram. He did betray Wasim Akram... Atleast according to the narration. Imran was the one who encouraged Wasim to sledge Vivian Richards. He said that he'll be there behind him no matter what happens after sledging. But he did not stand up for his protege when Vivian Richards came up to beat Wasim. That's not cool if you want to lead a team.

Not sure that lions are seen very often in the jungle! But I get your point.
I remember as a youngster in England when limited over matches were televised every Sunday, being so excited when the county team Somerset was due to play - that meant IVA Richards, coming in at #3.
I watched in awe as he strode to the crease with that characteristic swagger. Took his guard. Played and missed outside the off stump 2 or 3 times, and was out.
But I felt I had got my 'money's worth' in those 10 or so minutes.
Heroes were bigger in those days.

Being an ardent follower of cricket from 1977 , I've watched so many games and I would shout out from any rooftop that Vivian was the best batsman the world ever had. He didn't have the best techniques like Kallicharan or Gavaskar but then his sheer power, eye sight and attitude, no-one ever had. The bowlers those days were the best cricket ever had. Lille, Jeff Thomson, Pascoe were very fearsome bowlers. Thommo who recorded the fastest ever ball in the history of cricket was also infamous for body line tactics. Vivian faced them all without a head gear in tests, oneday and in county cricket. Something only a super legend can do. Cricket as a sport had it's golden era from 70s to early 2000, people like me no more watch cricket these days as it has become such a boring game with over hyped players and just glitz. Indian cricket was at it's best when Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid et al were around.

Imran's take on it was, you started it, so you have to go out there into the corridor and finish it. If you can't finish it, don't start it. Sounds like Wasim learnt his lesson well.
