This video needed to exist years ago... This is the basic stuff that is obvious to anyone after their 2nd or 3rd time playing, but that raw beginner needs this info as much as anything else. Thanks for making it.
That string stretching tip of Pete is pure gold, have to remember that.
I've been playing for 40+ years but still had to watch. This is great info for beginners. Good job guys!
Somewhat comfy to watch videos dedicated to beginners. Even if you play for 100 years.
From top to bottom, Anderton's is the best channel for all things guitar!
Did not get a starter pack as I have been playing for years now, however here I am watching an Anderson’s video just because.. 👍🇦🇺
This might sound a bit odd, but this channel has been a real comfort this year. It’s persuaded me to get back into guitar, but more than that I’ve just enjoyed the content and the overall friendly tone. Wicked channel, a regular on my home screen and regularly inspirational 🙌🏻👍🏻
Love you guys for doing this. I remember when I got my first guitar in the early 90's. Because we didn't have internet back then it took me years to find out some basic stuff. Fun fact, in Dutch we use: Een Aap Die Graag Banaan Eet for the strings, Which translates to A monkey that likes to eat banana. Of course it doesn't work in English, but I digress.
Ah yeah the good ol A-M-T-L-E-B tuning 😂
@@JosePineda-jn8jk 🤣🤣🤣
Great idea guys. What a great service to provide young new players or new players in general. I think we all had a bit of a struggle when we got our first guitar. Well done lads.
Excellent "get going" video for new guitar players. May I add one thing on string changing? Over time strings get dirty and they become less and less bright sounding. After a while (maybe a couple of weeks for some, but for me I only bother around every maybe four to eight weeks, it really depends how much you play your guitar, and how much you care about the better tone you get with nice, new, bright sounding strings) you will need to change the entire set of strings even though they have not broken. It's perfectly OK to take off all the strings in one go if you're changing all your strings, you will not hurt the guitar. This also gives you the chance to clean the fretboard and around the pickups if there's dirt and/or dust lodged there. It's recommended to replace "like for like" in terms of string sizes, so if you have a set of .09 to .42s on the guitar already, replace them with another set of .09 to .42s. This will prevent any intonation issues. Replacing strings might seem a bit nerve wracking at first, but you'll soon master it so get stuck in, and happy playing!
I wouldv'e killed to get a starter kit like this when I started playing in the 90s. My parents bought me my first guitar, (it was a Harmony), from Sears and an old Peavy amp from a yard sale.
I’m now in my early 20s,and you guys have been keeping me company since my teen years…I really hope you receive all the love and gratitude for all those amazing years you’ve been around! It’s not just the great content,it’s also the fact that you feel like home and you give us those feelgood vibes!Happy holidays and happy new year to you and your loved ones!🎄🎅
Great job gentlemen! As a youngster I nearly ruined the neck on my first bass while tuning it for the first time. No one explained octave tuning to me! I wish the shop took 5 minutes to explain the instrument to me. No UA-cam back then 🤣
Best... just got a guitar video... Sure wished I had your channel in the early 80s. Great.
I always trim my strings around 2 inches past the tuner. It works for acoustic and electric guitars
You should put this video or one like it as a link in the email receipt of every starter / budget guitar purchase!
Great video. We’ve come along way since I got my first electric and amp back in 73. I recall my brother saying “ it sounds like an ordinary guitar”. With a £25 Zenta amp it did. Then I hooked it up to my dads reel to reel tape recorder which I used as a preamp and Instant Brian May!
I didn't get an amp with my first Electric guitar. My mother feared it would be too loud. Too bad for her that you can also overdrive a living room stereo.
@@IrLosin Indeed!
Great video, guys!
Great introduction.
interesting take on settling in new strings. ill try that next time Pete. thx
Thank you so much for this video !!!
YEAH VERY INTERESTING BOYS SOME COOLIO TIPS, WE SHOULD HAVE HAD THIS YONKS AGO.
thanks Guys.
25:59 and all future pedal addicts are hooked :)
This video is not for me, but I watched the whole thing anyways and loved it 😀 Love you Andertons guys
Nice one! You could do a video about the set up to play acoustic guitar at a bar or something.
I started this gear hoarding in 2019 thanks in large part to Andertons videos like this, I did not have any guitars...now I have a stack of pedals and two guitars...looking for #3 and #4...
My favourite bit: "Here we go! I am going to simulate breaking a string! aaaAAAaaa"
What a great video
You watched the whole thing in one minute?
@@BlazertronGames I think he means it's great they actually took the effort to educate starting guitarists about basic things after the sale. No need to be negative.
@@IrLosin good point, it seemed like he was just writing something positive to get likes. You see those types of comments a lot when something has just been uploaded.
Every single time they point up there at a video, there's never a video. It's high-larious. LOL!!!!
Something wrong with your youtube? For me there always is a link to a video where they point
Probably some issues with your browser..i dont know. I dont have such problem.
Watching on a tv perhaps?
@@ashwolf1977 Ah. Ok. I'm not surprised. Safari is becoming a real problem when it comes to UA-cam (and other sites too). Thanks (to Ciri and you) for letting me know. I'll move to Firefox sooner than later.
Mine doesn’t ever have a video either. It used to a few months ago but some update got rid of it.
Great instructional video. I did keep thinking though, what about the kids that don't even know where your fingers go, or what a chord is. Can you show how to actually start playing on the fret board. Like an E minor, or the 2 strings needed to play A horse with no name.. Without a couple of basics, this interest might last about 2 minutes. Just a thought...Cheers.
To be blunt. What you are asking for is quite obviously available and very, very plentiful. There may be a specific subset of people who have no idea how to even use the internet or have never seen the instructional books in music stores but the vast majority do understand that such info is out there and do understand how to type something like "beginner guitar lesson" into Google or UA-cam's search bar. There are so many resources already out there that there is no real reason for this video to double its length in order to even half cover it.
"We want to take 5 or 10 minutes"
Oh Lee...
Careful with that watch around all those magnets
Why dont set up starter packs that plug in to your stereo? Valeton GP-100VT? I started 3 years ago with such a kit and if it had such a unit would not have been missing anything on my journey until now. I switched fairly soon to an Ampero One and will never need anything else.
Who has a stereo nowadays? It all seems to be smart devices to Bluetooth speakers.
@@adamrobinson8620 As a guitar player? You dont have a stereo? Or a big enough BT speaker. So be it. Most of them have wired connectivity too. I would even concider getting a pair of active speakers or plug Headphones in if you got nothing else. Hard to belive you could have non of that as a music loving person.
@@robertkruger8180 I have a stereo, but I also have a guitar amp. I’m imagining my grandkids, who have none of that. I think they are the target for this product. And I’m not letting them blow my stereo up by feeding a guitar through it.
@@adamrobinson8620 Your Stereo blows from a Guitarsignal? Dont you hear Rockmusik for example? You say no one has a stereo. On what is this based? On people who care about music that actually would pick up a guitar or just by your grandkids? Sorry but this is more an argument about your feelings than the actual truth, imo.
@@robertkruger8180 I don’t especially want a fight with a stranger. If you believe everyone still has stereos, maybe you are right and I am wrong. I based my comment on what I see in people’s houses.
And I’m a gigging musician, so my opinion comes from one who would and regularly does pick up a guitar.
But in case others want to try it, I have to note that recorded music is processed - gain carefully set, signals compressed and so on. A guitar would generate signal, and be sent through devices that may amplify that signal (that’s how distortion and overdrive are created for example). So of course it’s possible to overload the inputs of a stereo or whatever, and then depending how it is designed you might cause damage if you turn things up too loud. You can also blow up a guitar amp, but less risk as it’s designed to take this sort of signal. But I have seen both stereos and stage amplifiers damaged by excessive signal over the years.
Not really a criticism of the video in itself but it really does drive home a thought I have had for a long time now. The guitar industry really, really needs to rethink the "beginner guitar kit" paradigm. The guitars that typically come in these packages tend to be adequate enough but the amplifiers are just too disposable to be truly worthwhile (even for a beginner). This isn't to say that beginners should go and spend $1000+ on a professional level tube amplifier but we are at a point where there are other options that not only are still reasonably inexpensive but also more effective as learning platforms for new players.
If anything, I kinda envision different kinds of packages for different players. For someone looking for a more traditional guitar+amp experience, the focus really should be on bundling a entry level guitar with one of the cheaper entry level modeling amplifiers. Something with (ideally) about 15 to twenty watts and a 12" speaker so that it can give a generally balanced/pleasant sound and let the player explore some different effects/amp models. It doesn't need to be the top of the line but it makes a whole lot more sense these days than a disposable 10/15 watt solid state with a tinny sounding 8" speaker.
The other option (and probably the most logical for younger players these days) would be the same aforementioned entry level guitar bundled with some kind of simple interface and a activation code for amp/effect simulation software. This might not be quite as cheap as other options but it would make a lot of sense. A lot of kids are getting into guitar via UA-camrs, Tiktokers, and the like so offering a beginner package that kind reflects that side of thing would not only offer a bit more versatility than a beginner pack typically offers but also just be more appealing to a generation that might never actually need a physical amp to do what they want to do.
To be blunt. I can't help but feel that the standard issue, largely disposable solid state 10/15 watt amp with a 8" speaker needs to stop being the default choice for beginners. It made sense years ago when there were no better alternatives in the low-cost bracket but we don't live in those days anymore and such amps are pretty much doomed to be e-waste and not much else. They don't really have any purpose or appeal once a new player gets even a half-decent beginner's amp.
Don't get me wrong. I get it. I get that retailers go for this stuff (especially large outfits like Guitar Center) because it is cheap and easy to sell to parents and kids that have no real reason to know better. It just sucks that there are so many better ways to get people started that don't really involve a lot more money and could give them so, so much more room to explore and learn.
I actually was thinking how good the amp was compared to how they used to be.
@@adamrobinson8620 Something tells me that if you were to use that same amp yourself at a store or (especially) in your own house, it wouldn't sound as good. The room they are in is going to be pretty flattering to just about anything (even the older beginner amps that we used to get).
@@startrekmike I doubt anyone is going to trade in their Marshall for it. But my grandkids get these things when they are maybe ten or eleven, and love it. Sure you can spend a bit more and get something better, but it’s enough for the kid to decide if they like to play.
@@adamrobinson8620 My larger point is that things have changed a lot since the 80's and 90's. There are inexpensive options that offer a lot more to a new player than the old fashioned (and entirely disposable) 10 to 15 watt solid state with a 8" speaker.
What's more. Kids are living in a very different world where having the ability to connect the guitar to a device (computer, phone, etc) makes a lot more sense.
@@startrekmike I see the point of both options. What seems not to have changed in my grandkids day is the desire to hang out with friends and play music very loudly and very badly. As long as they are having fun. Full disclosure. I had one of those disposable ten watt amps, though mine had a ten inch speaker. Truly awful piece of kit, though impressive for 50 years ago. But it's been through my brothers, various kids, and now one of my grandkids uses it, so disposable?
Great video for those who knows nothing
Ok. So I’m a guitar noob. My fender mustang has volume and then master volume. What is the difference?
Good question! Use the "Gain" and "Volume" knobs in different combinations to get the tone or type of sound you want. Then use the "Master Volume" to make the amp louder or quieter. More "Gain" and less "Volume" will give you a dirtier or distorted sound, whereas less "Gain" and more "Volume" will give you a cleaner sound. either way, the "Master Volume" will purely make things louder or quieter, without changing the character of the sound. This allows you to adjust for practicing alone versus in a band for example. I hope that helps.
Just like Rick says, you normally want to use the Master volume to set the final loudness of the amp. The other volume knob will also change the loudness, but you will notice that it interacts with the gain knob and indeed can add some gain itself. Big caveat, though, on some amps the two volume knobs behave in an exactly opposite manner (!) which is super confusing 😅
Thank you for the information! I was a little confused but you guys cleared that up. Happy New Year!
You sure Pete was sick yesterday just to avoid the Christmas challenge?
The title was misleading… Please do a Setup video next!
You really don't need to be "brave' to set your intonation- it's really simple. You just need a tuner and a decent Phillips head screwdriver- you pluck the string open and make sure it's in tune- then fret it at the twelfth fret and pluck it again- should also be in tune here- if it's not then you adjust it. If it's sharp you lengthen the string by moving the saddle back, if it's flat you shorten it by moving the saddle forward. Then you check it again. It's much, much easier on Fenders- way easier to get to the little screw you turn to adjust the saddle. It's a tad more aggravating on a Gibson- but it's basically the same thing- it's just more difficult to get to the screw you have to turn.
The one thing that can throw you off is that if you have a string sitting too high off the neck- it will refuse to intonate. You keep moving the saddle back, but it stays sharp anyway- just lower the saddle a half mil and check it. It will fix it. My Affinity though had a sweet spot- it has this one spot where the saddle is high enough to stop string buzz, but low enough to still intonate- so you have to just play with the action until you find it.
Trust me- I was surprised I could do it, but I did. And if I can- anyone can.
I want a Super Death Thrash Metal pedal
You could also say that in Europe, We've got EADGHE instead of EADGBE, coz in traditional music it's H not B and B flat is H.
pretty sure that's exclusively a German thing. by and large if a new player was searching for standard tuning anywhere on the internet or through asking people i find it highly unlikely they'd get confused between H and B
Not in England! We invented Everything!
@@fakeaccount663 not exclusive to German. In Finland H is also used. Altough some people use B, because it makes sense
