Good God i know from the hair its in 80's but still the sound is track from heaven!. I sit here now with tears running of my youthful days back than. And how my ants and mother all sang. Thank you for posting this. Thank you
I was very cynical of her at the start of the video but if you close your eyes you can hear the voice of god it is very beautiful.... Ms mckenna taught us this song in 4th class!
On the other hand, I could take you to the top of Moveen Hill and from those "high rocky slopes" show you the cliffs, as well as fine views of "the towns of Kilkee and Kilrush", "the high rocky mountains o'er the west coast of Clare" and even the glorious "view o'er the Shannon" (to Kerry) -depending on whose set of words you are using. All of which would make sense of the song.
The Cliffs Of Dooneen By Jack McAuliffe Verse 1 I have travelled afar from my own native home. Away oer the billows, away oer the foam I have seen many sights but no equal Ive seen To the old rocky slopes by the cliffs of Dooneen. Verse 2 I have seen many sights of Columbus fair land, Africa and Egypt so Delightful and grand, But dig me a grave were the grass it grows green On the old rocky slopes by the cliffs of Dooneen.
Verse 3 How pleasant to walk on a fine summers day, And to view the sweet cherries that will never decay, Where the seagrass and seaweed and the old carrageen All grow from the rocks by the cliffs of Dooneen. Verse 4 The Sandhills of Beal are glorious and grand, And the old castle ruins looking out on the strand, Where the hares and the rabbits are there to be seen Making holes for their homes by the cliffs of Dooneen.
Verse 5 I have tracked my loves footsteps to the boathouse of old And the dance on the hillside where love stories are told, Its there you will see both the lad and the colleen Moving round by the shore of the cliffs of Dooneen Verse 6 Farewell Dooneen, Farewell for a while, And to those kind-Hearted neighbours that I left in the isle, Ma my soul never rest till its laid on the green Near the old rocky slopes by the Cliffs of Dooneen
She was a mighty woman, to sing it unacompanied. It takes a lot of courage to do that. You could hear every word. I find it strange that she sang it, as folk music didn't come out of the Midlands of Ireland. Maybe someone can correct me on that.
It's funny, but I don't know anybody in North Kerry who claims to be able to see Kilkee from there, only people who've looked at a map without regard to the fact that Kilkee is in a dip, and there are hills in the way. However, I don't really know why we're arguing the point after your sending me the full Jack McAuliffe "Kerry" set of words, which are completely different to the "Clare" ones that Mary is singing here. In fact the Kerry version doesn't mention Kilkee, or Kilrush, or Clare at all!
More rudeness! I know where Dooneen Point is thank you. I've been there, have you? If so, perhaps you could tell me where the cliffs are, or at exactly what vantage point on them you have to stand in order to see Kilkee and the west coast of Clare (which are on the Atlantic, not the Shannon Estuary) from, though I'll grant you that on a clear day you might be able to make out the mouth of Kilrush Creek. Otherwise, if you are right about the location, the song is nonsense.
She sang this song in a way that there was No place for guitars.drums .or base .or any other musical instrument to influence her style. If she was a man you could call her a 1 man band 🤣
Stellar performance by red haired Mary......absolutely stunning....what a talent this beautiful singer is....simply the best!!

I've been collecting country music since the late 1940's. I had never heard this beautiful voice before today. I'll have some of her music.
