Break down is kind of harsh. It's a new boat, things need to be adjusted, tightened, looked after and the like. Sometimes you have to shut down to make that happen but it is expected on a shakedown (often delivery) run. A great boat she will be. Great systems and gear. An attentive crew "looking for problems" and finding them. The new owners should have a blast. Let's give these lads a thumbs up rather than look for issues...
THE GEORGE Once - but it effectively had already broken down a long time before. The rudder shaft clamps had gone loose. Nordhavn UK did not see that, shocking. They made the boat come to Solent all the way from Ramsgate, then said the hydraulic pump was not good and needed to be bigger. Big expense. Boat kept not wanting to sail in a straight line at all. It had been sailing like that for two years. I had a very good look - which required you getting in and looking up in a very awkward position - reason why Nordhavn "engineers" just missed it. Total design fault. Easy to fix - tighten bolts, extra bolts, loctite, then boat goes in a straight line. No bigger pump needed at all, expensive trip to Solent and back not needed either.
waterworldcat So it did not break down. It was never right, you simply fixed a bad install. Like I said... shakedown stuff. The first guys should have found it. Everyone after them. Took you guys to fix it but... she was not in a state of breakdown..... Words matter.
SparksMagoo Well, there were a few other problems, such as a fuel leak on a highpressure hose going into the main engine. Not a state of breakdown but the boat as it did from its very first launch, was going for years in an sinusoid S line, clearly visible on the chart plotter, it would not go in a straight line, and Nordhavn said it was the stabilizers that did that for instance. The moment I sailed the boat out of the harbour for the first time I knew something was not right at all, good we found it a few days later. The Nordhavn is generally a good boat, but the way this was not picked up and not put right, and charged for quite seriously by Nordhavn when it's really their design fault is quite shocking.
Larry Patterson It's the way this heavy girl sits, yes. Immensely heavy and solid though, I had no doubts in her at any point. Doing very high jumps into big waves in the Biscay standing on the stern it did feel like she was pushing her stern in deep, bucking like a horse on hind legs.

Catamaran - faster, more comfortable, more space. Get an Outremer 5X. Nordhavn will roll always, and it has less space and less nice space than a cat. Modern cats - great all round visibility from cockpit under bimini, from saloon, from cabins (which have more privacy and there are more of them rather than the two in the Nordhavn). Great at anchor as well... drop the dinghy in quickly and easily. Sail without using diesel at 12+ knots and horizontal comfort, sleep cook eat live as normal underway. Heaven !!
I completely disagree, Cat will slam on the bottom in heavy seas that the Nordhaven will take all day. BTW a cat will roll as well in the north Atlantic, nothing can get you away from that. A Cat will go down in the slosh long before a Nordhaven!

It looks like she is sitting low in the bow when you finished your crossing (10:29). Any reason for that or just the way she rides?

Rather noisy and a lot of problems for a first voyage. Did you guys not do a trial run before you set out?
For ocean going passage making. What would be your boat of choice (money no object) - a similar size cat or a Nordhavn?
