fun fact : David Tennant first appearance in doctor who was as you know was called "Parting of the ways, which SPOLIERS if you didn't or want to read the Harry Potter books. is the same name for the chapter that Barty Crouch junior, got his soul taken out, who was also played by David Tennant
7:45 Rose can serve me drinks and snacks anytime she wants. :) 11:29 It's like Mickey said "everything is the same but a little bit different" so Doctor was surprised.
Another great reaction! You probably remember seeing a Cyberman head in Van Statten's alien museum at the start of "Dalek" - and yes, in the classic series they are one of the most famous recurring enemies. One really useful metaphor I remember hearing is that Daleks are like Nazis - they want to kill everything that isn't like them. Cybermen are like Soviet era Russians - they want to invade and convert everyone into being like them.
These are my favorite versions of cybermen, the older ones are iconic to the show for the older fans I suppose but these ones look and sound the best. The cybermen were essentially the doctors second arch enemies after the Daleks during the classic series. Also roger Lloyd pack is the one who plays Lumic and I still have no idea what the real actor sounds like. At the time I knew him from only fools and horses and he has an accent that he puts on, similar to when he was the Vicar of Dibley and he has a different accent and then again another accent in Goblet of fire and Doctor Who and now he’s dead and I have still no idea what the guy actually sounds like in real life XD
rocketcon this is bizarre I feel like my worlds been changed XD it’s so weird to see an actor play various different accents and tones without ever hearing them speak in real life
ObiWan Kenobi I disagree. I think the new ones are generic stomping robots. The 60s ones were the best. They weren't robotic, they felt like rotting humans beneath a thin exterior. Their voices were haunting and they didn't stomp around all stupidly. They're the one monster I think got much worse with time.
Alex Hodgkinson I really like it, I love the voices and the sinister march. The slow unstoppable moving was terrifying to me as a kid and I love the ‘delete’ killing that they do
And the actor in the opening scene with him is Denis Lawson, who played Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars trilogy and is also Ewan McGregor's uncle.
Like the Daleks, the Cybermen have been around for ages. I believe their first episode was the last of the First Doctor's era, all the way back in the 60s
Yep. The Cybermen were a prominent force in the classic series. They even had more episodes than the daleks and therefore ,rather ironically , in series 1 in the episode "dalek" a cyberman's head is shown at the beginning. The only explanation the doctor gives to rose of what it is at the time, is that it was "and old enemy" .
Just to clear things up because I must have everything perfect, the Doctor didn't call them "Cybers", he actually said "Cybus", making the connection between the Cybermen and Cybus Industries.
You'd already seen a Cyberman in the episode 'Dalek', although they were a big alien foe in the original run having appeared in the first regeneration story.
Yup the Cybermen are another recurring villain from the classic series. Only difference is that in the classic series, the Cybermen were humans that slowly upgraded themselves bit by bit (cybernetic heart; limb replacement, etc) until they became fully converted Cyborgs. They are an example of how far humans would go to survive. The ones in this episode are an alternative universe incarnation that instead remove the brain and put it in a suit of armour.
Great reaction as always! Got to love Mickey Smith & his arc in Series 1 & 2 - from coward to badass hero! Noel Clarke is fantastic - he has gone on to be not only an actor but a screenwriter, director, and comic book writer - he has a new TV series he's co-creator of called "Bulletproof " that's just been shown in the UK. You were right about this episode being an action packed one - it certainly was. The 2nd part of 2-parters aren't always better than the 1st part that sets them up but in this case I think "Age of Steel" really delivers. It's a really solid story but it tends to be a bit overlooked as there are some other outstanding ones in the series. Great to see Shaun Dingwall (Pete Tyler) back - another super performance from him. Lots of little easter eggs in this story for Classic fans as well as the Cybermen are returning classic era "monsters". After the Daleks probably the most iconic of the classic era (& my personal favourite). They weren't universally liked by classic fans in this story - some feel they were too "stompy" and overtly mechanical. John Lumic was played by the late Roger Lloyd-Pack who was known for his comic roles in 2 very well known UK sitcoms ("Only Fools & Horses" & "The Vicar of Dibley") so he is really playing against type here.
Productionwise, the Cybermen have gone through design changes, unlike the Daleks. The New Cybermen are 3d (4th if you count the Marinus) version. Would post a link, but Spoilers abound.
Zvi mur There's far more than 4 versions. There have been at least 7 redesigns of the Cybermen in the classic era alone (original, Moonbase, Wheel In Space, Invasion, Revenge, Earthshock, Silver Nemesis).
rocketcon You may be right, but as a (God help me) casual Whovian, I differentiate by shape of Head/Helmet. For a long time didn't realize the Marinus are considered Cybermen. That makes them the first?
I look forward so much to you getting to Season 5. The production value is so far from where they started in the first season. Of course, by then they had NBC cash (BBC America), so that always helps. I love rewatching these first episodes though your eyes. David is a treasure for the world.
The Cybermen are second only to the Daleks as the most important and iconic villian in the shows history. It was a BIG deal to see them back in this episode, just like the Dalek in the first series. I quite like this episode. It takes a while to get going, but I enjoy the slow build up to finally reveal the Cybermen. I do have some problems with it though. The main one is Roger Lloyd Pack as John Lumic, so OTT and hammy. He doesn't carry any kind of threat or menance whatsoever. He's just a generic mad scientist. Rose is another problem sadly. This is probably Rose's worst story from a character standpoint. Like you said, she's selfish in this and doesn't show any significant growth from Father's Day. She's already met her real Dad and had to see him die. That experience should've made her accept that it was never meant to be and move on. Why Rose is trying to convince another man to see her as his daughter is beyond me. This version of Pete has got his own life, yet Rose is trying to make him bend to her will and fulfill her needs. Not a good choice by the writers to do this to Rose's character.
Jake and Ricky are supposed to be boyfriends but the scene explaining it was cut. However it was included on the deleted scenes so my gay ass still counts this as fact and plus the fact that the guy who plays Jake is gay in real life I’m counting this as canon
Geoffrey Groenendaal there’s quite a lot of gay suggestions in Russel T Davies episodes, the boy from the idiots lantern and Andrew Garfield’s character are all hinted at as being gay along with a lot of others. In fact Luke from the Sarah Jane adventures is confirmed to be gay by Russell but it never got to be screened due to Liz’s tragic death, he was going to come back with a boyfriend had we have gotten the full fifth series. It was just sad that at the time of writing Russell had to craftily sneak in gay characters rather than being more open as he would be able to be now.
ObiWan Kenobi The boy from the Idiot's Lantern was sensed to be gay by my gaydar. Unfortunately never watched the Sarah Jane Adventures, but might give it a go sometime soon
Geoffrey Groenendaal I’d definitely recommend it, it’s made primarily for children so the first two series’s are childish sometimes but it gets more mature and well made as it goes on, it really turns into something great
Love your reaction, the cybermen are an iconic enemy, one of their latest episodes was amazing, they start very "dalek-like" however some stories make very good use of them
FILMBuFF please be careful with some of the comments below they some people tend to talk shit about some things. Make sure you just enjoy watching the episode yourself and let it amaze you with all the creepy strange creatures. But the Rose is still young and immature, don't blame her or focus on her attitude towards some things to much alright.
I’ve seen other doctor who reactors reactions ruined because people like to overhype certain episodes during the shows run. They’ll say certain ones are the best episode in history or of all time or the worst in history etc. so it’s best not to listen to the overhype as an episode may never live up to that expectation and so may leave you thinking cheated and then not liking it overall very much as a result
Personally, I don't think Ross was being selfish, when she was upset that her parents never had her in that universe. I always thought anyone would be upset if they found out they didn't exist in another reality.

Cybermen are up there with the dalek as a big classic doctor who villian
fun fact : David Tennant first appearance in doctor who was as you know was called "Parting of the ways, which SPOLIERS if you didn't or want to read the Harry Potter books.

Just say Communists.
@@iceomistar4302 Soviet Russians are "communists", communist aren't Soviet Russians

Plus, the "DELETE! DELETE!" catchphrase? It's so childish and silly
Alex Hodgkinson I really like it, I love the voices and the sinister march. The slow unstoppable moving was terrifying to me as a kid and I love the ‘delete’ killing that they do
I thought Roger Lloyd-Pack was better known as Trigger from Only Fools and Horses than Barty Crouch from Harry Potter?
The actor who played Lumic (Barty Crouch sr) is Roger Lloyd-Pack.

Cybermen would be number 2 just behind the daleks in terms of villains, if you recall you seen the classic design at the start of Dalek
Cybermen are always so great to watch, they're such a fun classic villain

David tenant (the doctor) was also in Harry potter he was the son of the guy you recognized in this ep
The death eater

barty crouch and barty chrouch jr together again
Glad to see you're still staying with the show! Given time, you'll find that most of the things you're wondering about will be answered.
You'd already seen a Cyberman in the episode 'Dalek', although they were a big alien foe in the original run having appeared in the first regeneration story.
Cybermen premiered in 1966.
Let's not talk about the appearances of the villains
yeah the cybermen are one of the three most important classic villains. One other being the Daleks, and the third...... well no spoilers :)
Yay! More Doctor Who! 😊
Oh you realized he was in it 2 min after I paused to type that
Battle of the Barty Crouch’s.
Jr Vs Sr

That makes them the first?
With modern technology Cybermen could very much become real in the future
I look forward so much to you getting to Season 5. The production value is so far from where they started in the first season. Of course, by then they had NBC cash (BBC America), so that always helps. I love rewatching these first episodes though your eyes. David is a treasure for the world.
Aw, Mickey.... I felt so bad for him in this episode. Rose is a bad influence on both him and the Doctor, in my opinion.
The Cybermen are second only to the Daleks as the most important and iconic villian in the shows history. It was a BIG deal to see them back in this episode, just like the Dalek in the first series.

Ah-Ha I knew it! Jake's reaction to the news of Ricky's death instantly gave me that vibe.

Season 1 Rose > season 2 rose
