Roadside Rockhounding: Agates & Zeolites

- Join us for some fun roadside rockhounding in the Washington desert.
Stay until the end for a slide show of these tiny little agates and zeolites.
In the video I mention pillow basalt, which is a volcanic igneous rock that forms when lava of basaltic composition erupted underwater. The rapid cooling of the lava by cold water on all sides forms the pillow-shaped bodies, which can then break open and extrude more of the hot lava from inside.

Thank you 😊
I found a chunk of basalt with zeolites on the beach this weekend, then you tube saw fit to toss this video back into my feed 🤣 it's like it knew I needed the confirmation of what I found.
That's awesome, were you on Oregon or Washington coast?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Washington, up in Port Townsend.
The Fourth Photo in the slide show looks like a Sheep if you tilt your head to the side lol. So Cool!
I'm in Clarkston so as soon as the video began I figured you were on the snake! I am JUST starting to learn and get into this so your videos are a wealth of knowledge and resources. It also shows there are tons if places right in the area, thank you!
Welcome to the channel, we have been exploring that area more and more. SE Washington and NE Oregon have so many cool locations.
WOW
Learning of rock hounding in Spokane ,Washington awesome thank you 😊
You're in the one of the best rockhounding areas in the country!
I wrap crystals and stones so happy you share these locations so I can find some thank you looking forward to finding these places 😊❤️✌🏻💙
Wow! That's really cool! I've understood how agates were formed and have eroded out of the basalt, but never ever have I seen them actually in the place they were formed! What a fantastic find and perfect demonstration of how agates came to be! Thanks for a great video!
Yeah it's really neat to see it in all stages like this.
You can find TONS of agate at the Columbia river near Vantage. I have buckets of specimens. It took me a long time to figure out if it was agate or jasper. Some of it seems half agate and half jasper. Some are opal and the rest I just call it chert and chalcedony. I'll upload a video of my collection so I can be corrected too. :)
I know I have found some down there myself! I subscribed to you, lets see those rocks!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Thanks much! I have a ton of rocks to show from my collection. I've been prepping a ton for my microscope, but it's going slow since I don't have any decent lapidary tools still. I'm using a couple different masonry/stone files, aluminum oxide sandpaper when possible, as well as diamond wheels for my Dremel. I get a glass shine using a piece of leather, water and zirconium dioxide. I've got a large piece of rhodonite I found last year and I've got a bag full of pieces that broke off when I initially broke the rock open. I was looking for pyrite or anything shiny, but instead I was treated to that beautiful pink and manganese oxide dendrites.--yeah, I'll do a video of that one next time I get a chance.
Paper towels would work in your bucket. In layers it would protect and cushion the stuff you did not want to break
Good call!
Thanks for watching everyone, I hope you enjoy the video.
Dude what a rad rock hunt, crystals and bubba agates, poppin outta the basalt 👌
And man loved learning how you guys started hounding.
Hahaha! “If you ever wanna be corrected... just say it on a video” 🤣😂🤣
And dude, beautiful slide show of the pretties 👊 just rad!
Thanks for watching man, I hope all is well in your world and if it's not just say so in a video and I'm sure someone will correct it for you!

Hahahaha
Cheers man, same to you and your lady and your pup
those agates are so blue !!
They really are nice!
I had fun trying to figure out the exact location you guys were at based on the hills in the background and that funky house. What did we ever do before Google maps? Lol. Next time we are in the are totally checking this out.
I'm glad you liked it!
Great fun find. Very interesting I live in Battle Ground Wa. St Helens is close.
You have lots of great spots around your area to rockhound at.
That was super fun to watch!! I've been waiting for the thaw here so I can start doing similar things to our basalt formations! So many agate beauties hiding in them!
Thanks man. Yeah its pretty fun to go straight to the source for them.
Yes, they do like tell when your wrong, when your doing stuff that's unsafe, which according to the comments I've read, is everything, and a bunch of other crazy stuff, I don't know how ya'll do it, but thanks, I enjoy watching.
I'm sorry but what exactly are you talking about here? What comments?
Such a cool surprise to find all those agates and jasper's. It just goes to show it could be a stretch of road we go past many times. The view of the lava and Ash mountains are very beautiful. Thank you, I enjoyed it very much 👍🏼
There's tens of thousands of rockhounding spots out there that has never seen a human foot step. You just need to start looking. Thanks for watching!
Where can I buy that chisel with the hand protector?
Home Depot sells them! They cost like $5 more then the other ones but its well worth it.
It's amazing to hear how light the traffic is! Now you need to try to think of any other road cuts that used to be hard to access due to heavy traffic.
That's a good idea, I can think of a few that are a little sketchy. I guess now would be a good time to hit them up.
mindat.org shows a site in that area west of Clarkston and has a list of minerals and zeolites, but although it lists opal and it has chalcedony it doesn't specify agate so you likely found a distinct site . Mindat has a free copy of Zeolites of the World by Rudy Tschernich
Well first off thank you for letting me know about that book on there, its definitely going to be making it on to my reading list now. One things to keep in mind about mindat is that it is a site of user generated data which sometimes can be off or just not fully complete.
Agate dad calls the agates in basalt galaxy stones.
He just pulled that out of thin air. It's actually called amygdaloidal basalt.
Looks as if y'all got some really good treasures and had a great time doing it that makes for a great day!
There is something I would like to ask.. Why should it bother you if I was to find something I like and enjoy colleting if I decide i want to take 20 buckets home and do with it what makes me happy even if it's speading it all over my house leaving no more than a path?
Great video guys keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
I wouldn't say it really bothers me but I do think its a little foolish to take more then you would ever need or could use just because you can.
I have seen so many older people in rock clubs pass away, the club comes in to help widow deal with the insane pile of rocks and ocean of full and forgotten about buckets of material. If all you're going to do is hoard something and let it sit in a bucket that fills with water what's even the point?
Collecting with intention and purpose is smart, collecting a hoard with no purpose is foolish in my opinion.
Would you rather have 100 broken cars sitting in a field or 1-5 nice cars that you can drive?
@@CurrentlyRockhounding good point
Do you know what mineral makes up the really needly white zeolites. I found a really nice there.
Zeolites are aluminosilicates, so they are made up of silicon, aluminum and oxygen.
Just for the record, my mom nicknamed me Butterfingers for the same reason. I'm stoked for you guys finding those agates in that basalt. If I was there I'd want to tear the hillside down too.
Hahaha I can't take all the hills I find!
The go pro deos not do rocks any justice I got a nikon p900 it does really good macro pics I love doing banded agates close up but keep on hounding bro🍻
I agree, I have Canon 70D but it's just so bulky and delicate. I worry about it bouncing around in a pack or being used in dirty, and dust places.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Yeah I dont like taking my camera with me its just as easy to do it at home
Santa is getting me a camera for my September birthday. I only know that nikon is a great brand of camera, is there clear protective cases you can have while you use it like the gopro?
Curious, are most roadside areas public or private? Is there a certain distance from the road that is considered public?
Well it really helps if there is a fence along the road indicating where private property starts but for give or take 5-10' along the side of the road is part of the right-of-way.
they are digging into the bedrock on my work's property and i have been getting a bunch of these! watchung basalt, greetings from nj!
This was fun to watch , especially since you described it. I’m a newbie even at my old grandma age. I’m going to really pay attention to stuff we stop by. Thanks.
It's never too late to start closely looking around.
Good spot
Heck yeah it is!
Often beauty is in the smallest detail usually overlooked. We have commercial mining operations here in NZ for zeolite used for kitty litter and much more.
Hahaha I didn't know zeolite was used in kitty litter.
Cool video, dude!! When we find these rocks at the Oregon Coast, we call them birthing rocks!
I enjoyed this video. I have a few spots I go to that has basalt with olivine/peridot, zeolite. Also white, silver, pink and yellow Druzy crystals with some botryoidal Calcite. I'm amazed that one valley or one hill side can have such a variety of basalt with different textures and colours of crystals. On the east coast I found basalt with orange crystals last summer. Basalt is under rated by most people but I think it has great qualities. I rock hound in the Okanagan Valley B.C. we have some of the same terrain. Enjoy your finds. 🐕🐾
Dang! I would love to find some botryoidal Calcite! It really is interesting, learning how to read the basalt flows is a great skill so that you can find stuff just like I did here. I haven't personally been in the Okanagan Valley in BC but I have spent some time just south of it in Washington. I love that area. Thanks for watching!
The botryoidal Calcite was not easy to find, but I also know where to find pink quartz crinoids. If you guys ever get to Kelowna I will give you a tour. You can come up hwy 395 or hwy 97 I recommend 395. Just let me know. Take care 🐕🐾
Skarn!!!
What a cool scenic drive 🙌 nice little haul of agates you got there. Are you going to tumble or polish them?
I believe these will be filling a display jar as is. Don''t get me wrong I love some tumbled and polished rocks but really I like them looking natural and in a labelled jar the best.
Cool video, around me there are lots of old trap rock quarries which are known for their world class prehnite and additionally quartz clusters, amethyst and other associated trap rock minerals.
Thank you! I would love to see a video out at those quarries if you ever visit.
Will do
Looks like you found where the Easter Bunny hides his Jelly beans🤣🤣🤣🤣♥️ Cool spot!!
Most of these are about that in size. Thanks for coming by and watching.
I've found some of those little crystals in basalt some are hollow others solid or in sheets. All look like quartz crystals.
I've read all of your comments here and i've seen some that you have left on other channels as well. Based on this I would really love to see you start uploading some videos as well. It's as easy as pulling out your phone!
No coordinates this time?
:'(
I do not release coordinates to all locations. If an area is private, i'm asked not to share it, or in this case it's not a safe spot due it being a road cut with almost no shoulder that we went to during the shut down. That said I do have a full series of videos explaining how I find spots and if you use the tools I talk about there you can find this spot.
Is it legal to use small explosives to rock hound in WA?
I'm not sure, but right now there's no people around to hear if you do and I won't tell when you send me a video of it!
Currently Rockhounding You have to have the license and a claim to use explosives for rock hounding and it is I believe illegal to rockhound on on the side of a highway but not saying you can’t look at rocks on the side of the highway 😉
*89…,👍* thanks for sharing this light show was nice..
Are the agates brittle?
I look forward to hear from you.
God bless you,
Stay safe Ken
Most of the agates that were only partly filled are kind of brittle but all of the solid ones are good to handle.
Google tells me zeolite is used in water filtration systems and has many other uses as filtering agents. There are several different types and some are very dangerous to breathe. Who knew? Another rock to make a dent in my brain. Y'all keep on hunting and teaching, above all stay safe and havagudun.
Oh man zeolite crystallization comes in so many forms and in some places is mined.
How do you polish your agates?
I don't have a very fancy setup, I use diamond pads on a drill, if you go back one video on my channel I show what I use to polish.
Nice Video, I sniff out rocks down south of you in Oregon. I really enjoy driving the BLM roads, finding their rock piles and quarry's, they seem to be a treasure trove of sorts. Always inspecting and spelunking, most recently I have been finding similar looking Zeolites but they have a dark green shell, and are completely full of crystal clear quartz, but it Flakes off like a Mica. Any idea what it might be? My last specimen was 2.5cm in diameter, beautiful rock.
We sure do have a lot options for places to go in the NW. I'm not sure exactly what it could be but if you upload a video showing it or drop me an email with photos I could help I bet.
Wawawai?
Someone knows the area!
I live very near :)
Nice find on your agates 👍
Thank you for taking us so long.
I enjoyed this video.
I'm glad I found your Channel.
