I love watching old shows like this. They make me feel ' safe '.. that's weird I know, it's hard to explain. Comforting is a better word. The world was a better place then.

It actually wasn't. It is just that you were a kid without the preoccupations adult life brings in. Also, there was no internet so you didn't know about also how horrible the world was. Ignorance is a bliss.
For kids today, the world is a better place now than in 20 more years.

      Bold One
I kinda disagree. Yes I would have loved for it to have gone on 2 more seasons. But the dynamics of the show would have been changed with the addition of the kids. In that respect the show ended up at the right time.
Once a sitcom adds kids to the show originally starring adults -- it ruins it.
(Even adding extra kids to a family oriented show ruins things. - The Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Family Ties, Growing Pains. Even with the facts of life they added Andy and Pippa once the girls grew up-)
      Just my thought 💭

Bronson has said many times that when Mark came on to shoot the pilot he had already shot the pilot six times, but he said with other actors there was just no chemistry and immediately when Mark came on to shoot the pilot they became instant friends...
Bronson is 62 years old now and Mark is 67, they are still friends and I'm so happy that they are!!
They have 100% spot on chemistry and you can see it in every episode, you can see how much they love each other and they get along so well!!!
My favorite episode is the episode titled A Christmas Story it's season 2 episode 11 it's my favorite episode and I cry every time I watch that episode 😭
I would love to meet Mark & Bronson!!
I was 12 years old when the show premiered, I am 48 years old now and I have been binge watching the series on Hulu, I'm on my 12th run through and I've been laughing and crying...my 2 heroes.. Cousin Larry Appleton (Lawrence) and Balki Bartokomous.
'Philos, my fifth cousin, three times removed, is a step uncle to your father on my mother's side, two continents removed..'
' So we're related by rumor...'
    'Not tonight!'
'i'm not the one you threw on the floor!'
Bronson had said that during the final curtain call when the audience asked if they could do the dance of Joy he said he was doing okay until he started to say what Balki always says 'now we are so happy we do the dance of Joy!' he said the minute he got to the word 'happy' he just lost it....😭😭😭😭 I don't blame him.
There is nothing more cuter than the two of them!!😁
My favorite little dance that they do together is when they're singing You can't touch that!
    Sending my love...💙

I think i was 9 when it ended. think it ended in 1993, they semi cancelled it for a few months in the final season. my favorite episodes were the ones with life and death steaks. Those shows did such a great job at highlighting the likeability of odd balls. even the bad episodes are good. entertainment really changed when this exact show ended. we're so uptight now, even stoners at nudist colonies take things too serious.

I believe that Balki took Mary Anne and their baby back to Mypos to give him a good, old-fashioned Myposian upbringing. Now, 25 years later, his son gets a job in the U.S. and the family moves back here with him. They show up at Larry and Jennifer's doorstep and their sons meet each other as adults for the first time. But don't worry, Balki has taught his son "everything he knows" about America. And thus the rebooted series begins.

For those who want to "bring back" old shows from the 80s (MacGyver, Perfect Strangers, etc) three words sum up what I think of that:
    Don't
    Be
    Ridiculous
There is only one first time. Only one MacGyver, only one Larry and Balki. Anything else is just a half assed money grab by lazy producers who don't think of new ideas.

    • @lionheart2663
      @lionheart2663 8 років тому +1

I agree to that. It's strange how unconvincing the new characters from the recent TV series have become. You just do not feel they are into the character , too much importance is given to camera work, editing, drama based dialogues, emotion , sexual references. That's why I never watch any of the latest TV shows. I am building my own personal 80s TV jukebox. Right now I have built Perfect Strangers Season1 and working on Macgyver series

There are a lot of people who like the idea of a reboots/sequels to their old favorite tv shows, so there is not much of a problem in "bringing" them "back". I'd myself prefer them any day over many creepy, vulgar tv shows of today. And reboots/sequels still demand a lot of hard work to keep the quality and have them watched. Like new storylines, what will happen next, new characters added.

I’d like a Perfect Strangers reboot in the sense of say a TV movie. It’s been over 25 years since it’s been off the air. What has happened in 25 years? More kids? Are they grandparents? Did Larry become an ace photojournalist? What about Balki? Did he find his dream job? Jennifer and Mary-Anne and their jobs? The guys are 60 & 65 respectively in real life. I think a TV movie is doable at some point. 😀

Screwed by the Network: A bizarre case of this toward the end. Despite the series continuing to do well in the ratings entering the 1991-92; ABC had been reportedly trying to cancel Perfect Strangers due to rising costs and advancing age (7th season). By early 1992, ABC decided to transfer the series from its 9:30 p.m. slot on the TGIF block to an newly-created offshoot block called "I Love Saturday Night", placing it alongside aging one-time ABC hits Growing Pains and Who's the Boss? plus a new animated series called Capitol Critters. Inevitably, the series (which finished at #32) plummeted to #65 in the ratings, allowing ABC to shelve it. Ironically enough, they did so by sticking reruns at its old slot during the summer of 1992 (the series would be placed on hiatus and have its final 6 episodes burned off over the summer of 1993, over a year and a half after ABC moved it to Saturday).

I think the reason TV sucks now, besides lack of original writing, is because we as a society insisted on digging behind the flashy, bright, cheerful surface and dredging up the pain and dirt in people's lives. Life could still be ugly back then, but shows like this were great escapism and masked all the bad things about life. It made it easier to live with, frankly. But we had a taste of dirt and scandal, and the media knew we'd buy it then, so that's what they gave us.

I was fine until they did the "Dance of Joy." Thank you for posting this. I was a child when PS aired, and I never realized how much fun the show was until I began watching clips and episodes here on UA-cam.

You said it... These shows were well-made, fun, and they had heart... There was a unique chemistry between the 2 main actors, who managed, very successfully and entertaingly, to capture the spirit of a previous (e.g. Laurel & Hardy) and create a thoroughly enjoyable - and, like L&H, largely innocent - show...

way back in the early 80's in the philippines, american comedy and drama sitcoms ruled our local channel. Like the Cosby show, Perfect Strangers, Three's Company, Mc Gyver, and etc. They were all so awesome and sensible. And as far as i can observe, most of the kids in the 80's have an excellent english speaking skills. Unlike now, our local channels give us NONSENSE shows and t.v. sitcoms. Where are those interesting shows way back then?? No more.

its silly that Sitcoms get about 8 seasons before they get killed off but ET has been on since the 80s. I find that unfair.

God, it irritates me how people always leave out Pinchot and Baker when they talk about great comedy duos. Comedy is alot like a dance in that when you have the wrong partner, nothing goes right. I don't think you could possibly get a better partner for either one of them.

The deep character contrast between the two and its consequences were hilarious. Like the shady ways Larry used to hold on to his job or impress Jennifer and Balki's reaction to that. Or Balki's using honest ways and Larry's reaction to that.

Even though I was only like 3 to 6 years old when Perfect Strangers was on TGIF it was my favorite show to watch. Not even Full House or Family Matters tops my list like Perfect Strangers. They really should bring it back to TV even if its on Late Night on TV Land or Family 43.

    • @crapple009
      @crapple009 2 роки тому

Agree with you totally on Full House but the interaction between Carl and Steve Urkel on Family Matters was, for me, every bit as good as the interaction between Balki and Larry, though the relationships were different. A tough call for me..

I used to watch this when it was on only when there was nothing else on, I thought it was corny back then but always thought Pinchot was a cool guy in real life, but as for a great show not too sure about that. I was more into Miami Vice, Family Ties, Quantum Leap stuff like that.

I loved that show. It was slapstick and cheese all the way, but it was so funny. Perfect Strangers is a really funny show. Why can't TV producers and directors make more funny shows like this instead of the hundreds and hundreds of shows that are just garbage? Sometimes people just want to laugh. Two and a half men isn't funny. How I met your mother isn't funny. The nerds on Big Bang Theory aren't funny.

The main reason they haven't released the rest of the show on dvd is mainly due to high copyright costs for the songs that Bronson and Mark Linn sang over the 7 seasons. There is talk that season 3 might be released by the end of 2012.
