    About Simple Little Life:
    This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
    Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
    Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

    I used the basic idea to straighten a warp in some barstock that came warped. I discovered it while sanding the flats on boat knife build along. Saved my butt! Thanks man!

    So clever. Love the simplicity.

    The first blade I tried to straighten snapped during the process. I was doing a temper straighten by letting it come up to heat in the oven, then taking it out and putting it in the vise with the pins. I assumed that it cooled too much and then snapped. But the only way I have gone about straightening a blade after hardening has been with tempering heat, not cold.
    The second and most recent time I straightened a blade it actually worked, but I used a 3/8 flat bar as a backing plate with 2 loose rods for one side and a type of vise grip for the middle point. Then I put the whole thing in the oven for an hour. (Even if you move the pins further out, it will still put a fairly sharp bend right in the middle.)
    I would recommend you try it with tempering heat, go slowly, and don't create too much counter bend. It obviously has a good heat treat, so it should act like a good spring and return to its original warped state when you stop bending it. So you need heat to help remove its memory while bending it slightly past where you want it. Let it soak for a while in that state, and see how it worked. Repeat as needed, but don't do it cold.

      Thank you! And you’re welcome👍 when it happened I thought, “oh crap, there goes that video...” but then I figured I gotta keep it real. Still share the concept, and potential dangers with it 👍

    I love how informational your videos are! You're really good at making videos! Most people just show vids of them making them but you talk about what you're doing and things you go through as you make it I love your vids!

    I build a similar device just made it all wood and glued some neodyme magents in the back so it is fixed to the vise. I think correcting warped blades works best when they're still fresh out the oven and still hot, so I chose to use wood because it doesn't suck the heat out of the blade as aggressively. Also put like 2 1/2 inch radii on the contact point so it is a fairly mild, not too aggressive bend. Works fairly well. I like your version too tho. I would imagene you can make very accute corrections with the half inch diameter contact.

    I have had some success with clamping the blade to a piece of angle iron or between plates in the tempering cycle to straighten minor bends. It was a tip from one of my buddies, who worked professional at a company that specialized in hardening custom machine parts.

      This is basically what I do. I have a dedicated flat bar that I clamp warped blades to for temper. If this does not work I shim a slight counter bend for the second temper cycle. This method has yet to let me down.

    You need more than three rods, and your jig should be the length of your average knife, basically so you can clamp the whole blade in it from tip to butt. Much like your aluminum plates do for your stainless projects, primarily to quench, but it keeps them straight. I also clamp carbon steel blades in between the aluminum plates after the oil quench to cool down for this very reason.

    Awesome knife straightening jig. I don't think you need to change anything about it. You should warm up the blade with a heat gun before trying to shape it straight in the jig. This should help.

    Made basically the same for my arbor press...prefer it over the one I made for the vise because I have more control/feeling plus the 2 rods are held in place with magnets.makes life easier when u wanna adjust them.

    I did wonder if the bars were too close but I wasn't expecting them to have that much effect. It's good to see a failure and why though, because everybody learns from it.
    A pity about the knife though, it looked a useful little tool.

    I really like the fixture (if the pins were spaced a little farther apart, as you mentioned), but there's no way I'd be trying to use that without adding a little bit of heat to the blade first UNLESS it was right after quench, where you still have some time to bend the blade without nearly as high of a risk of fracture.Either way, great vid.

    Hey Jeremy sorry to hear they are still stealing your video's. Good idea on the knife clamp. I agree maybe you should adjust the pins so as not to have too much force in one place. The tool you made reminds me of a blacksmiths bending jig. Glad to see you are having a good spring/ summer with the family. Thanks for the video. Keep up the great work.

    I'm sure you know but you only need to make another 2 pin jaw for the jig with a wider space between the two pins. That way you can have 2 different pin spaces for the jig. Nice idea for the jig and easy to grab and use when you need it.

    I fixed my Catty Wompousnous by clamping the blade with about double the bend and running it in the oven at tempering temp for 30 minutes dose the trick .Dose any know if this would have an adverse affect on the blade ??

    I’ve watched your videos for quite some time now and have seen you heat treat many times. However, I’ve never seen you “draw the spine back” after heat treatment. Is this something that you have considered?also, why/why not? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Instead of using bar use bearings so it’s like a small roller and use the vice as your tension might work a bit better just an idea so it rolls through just less stress on blades

    • @Simplelittlelife
      @Simplelittlelife  6 років тому

      Yeah that would probably be better. I was hoping a quick little build would get me through though 😆👍

  • @DethpickleDave
    @DethpickleDave 6 років тому

    Don't make a new pair of straighteners. Just make a one or two more of the 2-bar sides at greater spans. You can reuse the single pin side with each wider mate and get more straightening radii. Then just use whichever is appropriate at the time. Cool build.

  • @brxtmp106
    @brxtmp106 6 років тому

    Like the idea but wondered if smaller diameter rods along with the wider spacing might be “safer” by limiting the maximum deflection available .

    • @Simplelittlelife
      @Simplelittlelife  6 років тому

      That would limit the possible deflection for sure. Great tip. Thank you 👍

  • @rascalwind

    Would it work better after your anealing from the temper to keep the knife at 400 degree's and then do the try to straighten?
