Need to get some dirt & rocks around the bottom of the new chick coop before the rats or snakes find them.
Yep
You should put a board on the floor by the door so you can come in and out the door without them being able to get out
just came here to say that - put up a 1x10 or 12" board 2 or 3 feet in across the width of the shed so you can safely enter without stepping on any of them. Also probably need another couple of waterers/feeders so they don't have to compete for resources quite so much.
Absolutely agree with all these comments and the heat lamp is necessary, if they get to warm they have room to get out from under it. Gary you did the necessary maybe borrow a taller ladder for the rest.
I always do one side of the roof than attach the ridge cap to that side. And as I do the other side I attach the ridge cap as I add roofing one piece at a time, sliding the metal roofing under the ridge cap. That way the ridge cap is finished with the last piece of metal roofing.
That seems like a lot of chicks that didn't make it. I would call the company you bought the chicks off of to see if they will replace the ones you lost. I hope the chicks flourish in your new barn!
Those chicks should have heat source at night. They like 95-100 degrees until they grow feathers. It's a shame so many perished in that box. Seems like 1 section was starved of oxygen somewhere along the way.
Yes look how they are standing in the light from the roof . They want the suns heat . They won’t make it if they don’t put a heat lamp there only a few days old
A clear plastic ridgecap would give them the sunlight, you would have light and keep the rain out - win win.
Gary, the Amish around here say that the screws go in the ridge, not the flat part of the metal roofing. They do lots of roofing and i have never seen the screws in the flat part. They say in the flat part if the rubber washer dries up you get roof rot. In the ridge you will not. Im not sure why but i think theres enough air to dry it out in the ridge. Check with your metal supplier to make sure you dont void any warrenty too by placing screws in the wrong spots.
These days, most metal roofing company instructions say to install the screws in the flat parts. Both methods are acceptable.
I hope foxes don't dig there way under the sides of the shed I would of used wire mesh on the floor and sides please Gary you need to seal all the floor and and sides with wire mesh this will stop rodents digging there way in X
We had to do that to our coop after a wolf dug under ours and got all of ours. We replaced them. We weren't sure what got them until he came back again and that time we saw him.
Homesteader, Justin Rhodes, lost 100 chicks due to a rat that crawled under
Loved the bloopers!!! Lol! Gary did a great job.
Need another waterer!
Also instead of putting the 2 metal pieces on the roof get the clear plastic panels so you will have sunlight coming through
Wire mesh around the shed so the foxes don’t get to the chicken
If the nights are cold you should have a worming light or something to make them comfortable.
OMG Gary is such a Chickadee Dad as he is rushing to put down straw & get the barn ready! Awe. .. he is talking to them🫢 To sweet 🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
The chicken experts come out of the wood work. I think you guys are doing great. A threshold in doorway like everyone said does seem like a Great Idea
I have never seen a company that would send that many chicks in one box that is just asking for disaster they are to crowded and are bound to trample each other, call and complain you paid good money for them..
God Bless from your Canadian Friend.
Ditto
Board on the inside bottom of the door.
Sorry about how many didn't make it! I would complain for sure. Gary, you need to get a ladder with adjustable legs! I have one because I'm on a mountain, and it's heavy but it's worth it! Blessings, Texas Deb ❤️
You should put a board at the bottom of the inside door step over it so chick's can't escape. ❤❤ I remember doing that every year. 2 waters 2 feeders. Make a trough out of a 5" pvc pipe.
Gary, they must think you are their mother?! 😊 They hear your voice.❤
Looks like Mel had fun editing this clucking video. The chicks are so cute. So is Gary.
Good job, Gary!!!😊🎉❤
Y'all are just good people - thank you for sharing your lives with us.
You should replace your fabric sheds with the one you just built... That would he amazing
Yeah that build is so very cleaver. Yes when the covers wear out you can still use the frames on the others❤😊
Check out living traditions and see how they do there watering system to keep the chicks out of the water, and like everyone else was saying you need a board at bottom of door to keep them in!
The metal you cut off for the vents can be put on a wooden fram and put hinges on then put them over the vent area so went it's storming out you can close the openings for protection from the weather.
You probably should have gotten the chick's out of the box ASAP instead of waiting.....
It looks great I wondered how you were fixing the corners. But you did it, yay Gary!
My grandparents put a board across their door to the chicken coop to keep the baby's in and you able to get in and out without them getting out.
LOVED the little "outtakes" at the end 😂😂😂😂
Gary seeing that ladder wobble reminded me why l don't like them. So glad you didn't fall. The chicks look happy running around you did an awesome job.
Put a board across the bottom of the door to keep chi ks in when you open the door (for now, lol)
Hi Gary and Mel, feel so bad about losing so many chicks. I agree with others about contacting the supplier for replacement stock, you paid good money so they needed to ensure appropriate container and stock volume to optimize survival. When thinking about the ridge and last roof sheet. I had a similar problem with a build so I used a plank of wood to distribute my weight on each side of the ridge, similar idea for your last sheet. Just move very gingerly, nothing too rough as that structure isn’t built for much weight. Also agree with other comments about using the offcuts of metal as storm flaps, they are a good idea. Any chance of a solar battery powered heat source? Catch you on the next. Watch how your ladder wobbles, you may want to use stabilizers off the sides when you are near the top. As you pushed on the driver the ladder moves out from the shed, stabilizers would stop that. It could be as simple as a piece of 4x2 anchored to the legs of the ladder.
Not sure who you bought your chicks from. Robinson Belly Acres called the company they ordered from and the company made good on the chicks that didnt make it through transport. You might call them. The chicks are adorable ❤
Good idea 👍
I agree if it was only a few no problem but over 20 that's just wrong
ok first off chicks are adorable.you need ventilation in the daytime and a heater at night.or they won't survive.was raised on a dairy farm we had chickens and ducks, pigs, cows.please vent your shed or they will start suffocating
Love the bloopers at the end. Good work
Cute little chicks. Doing a great job on that Gary. Enjoyed watching. Love Y'all
Wood trim to cover the edges
Ok this video answered my previous comment on the video before this video ☺️☺️☺️☺️ ....and besides that, the recycled poles served as great bones.. So great chicken shack Gary, I would be proud of everything you do cause you both have done a hell of a lot. It's my favorite series to watch on UA-cam 💜
Sorry some of them didn't make it there 😮. I would reach out to the company and let them know. Great job!😊
I could watch your intro over and over. It is amazing and says so much for such little words. Keep up the good work.
Hello Mel and Gary, your shed turned out perfect, love the colours of the tin. Boy that’s a lot of dead chickens, do they replace them for you guys? 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
You have done a great job on that little barn! Sad that you loss them chicks.
Should put some grit in for the chicks even if a shallow bowl of gravel
Wire out side the little bar. To keep critters to get in
Do you need to put them under 9:33 some kind of a heat lamp at night. Maybe put a tall board in front of the door on the inside that way they can't come out the door until they get bigger
Put cinder blocks for water and food to be off the ground
Word of caution. Secure the base of the coop. Predators can dig in. Rocks around may work
Maybe get the kids to collect the rocks and arrange them around the bottom.
Good morning…I hope you have a great day.. and that’s a lot of chickens… it will be a full house when they get older… be safe
Their really loving the sun shining in
I love the ending very real and humorous. "Bad Ladder - behave!"
Your “ clean outs “ will be fantastic in food plot , planning …. Great build !
If you put on the Ridge cap wouldn't that help with keeping in the warmth. Heat rises? Maybe 😊
Gary, I get a kick out of you talking to the chickens and rabbits and all the animals. Mel as well.....We all do that when we have our animals around. I talk to our indoor cat as she was an human being. ♥♥♥♥♥
Gary great job finishing the chicken hangout and OMG man where is your spotter 🤔❤️🇨🇦
You need to put a couple of boards up at the bottom of the doorway to stop the chickens getting out when you open the door. It looks great for a 'recycled' barn build, love your videos!
Hope a little more input will help. instead of putting rain gutter on chicken barn, dig a shallow trench in front and along the bottom sides and toward the back to drain runoff so water can’t get inside of structure, maybe even a strip of metal to keep water directed better. Possibly back your horse trailer up close so you can get up there to finish roof.
For an " upcycle building" you did a great job. Looks good and will give you many years of service.
Gary something I've done for the 'follow the leader' chick thing. I just temporarily screw a board I have to step over going in and out of coop doorway at the bottom. It stops them from getting caught when you go in or out. After couple weeks they will be ok without it but i just stood a 1x8 up the width of the door, slapped 2 screw in each side and it helps. ALOT! Just dont trip on way in or out, you may end up with 30% loss 😂
WONDERFUL JOB Gary
Great job on this build Mel & Gary
That many dead is not good. Any time we have had a high death rate on delivery we have had many more die. You had an extremely high death rate. The most we've ever had was right at 15%. I would suggest you go to your local tractor supply and try to replace as many as you can with chicks about the same size. Have a feeling you are going to lose a lot more. Honestly y'alls goal of 100 is pretty high. The most we only do 50 but we do that twice a year. THAT BARN IS FREAKING AWESOME!! Good job guys! You may want to consider using the pieces you cut out for ventilation and make some horizonal shutters you can prop open during the day. Close them when it rains cold ect. Also if you have a old carbide blade for your circular saw you can turn it around backwards to use to cut tin. I would use a new one it can ruin your blade. First week old chickens need 95* you can subtract 5* per week as the age Wk1 95*, wk2 90* , wk3 85* ect
until they are fully feathered. The temperature at the bottom of the brooding area should be 95-100 degrees for the first two weeks and then reduced 5 degrees each week until chicks are a month old. Use a brooder lamp (we recommend a red bulb) clipped over one side of the brooding area so the chicks can choose whether to be under the light or not. If chicks are crowded together directly under the heat source, then they are cold. If they are around the edges of the brooding area, then they are too hot. Adjust the height of the lamp accordingly and give them enough room to move in and out of the light to regulate their body temperatures.
Sunlight is free. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to have clear panels at the top rear where no metal roofing was.
Because as you noted, the chicks were going for the sunshine. 😏
If you had a break you could bend the metal. You should of had the lumber yard bend it for you.
Corners, the rake, THEN ridge cap.. so everything is waterproof
Congrats on ur new flock of new baby chickens
5:15 they are adorable
I’m only raising 14 right now and they are a handful. Love your new barn and set up for your little peeps!❤
Love the Bloopers at the end! Need more of them!
I'm so proud of y'all!!! Now y'all have a hundred chicks and it's fixing to get pretty warm. Get y'all about 6 milk jugs fill em with water, put them in the freezer. When it gets warmer put two of them in the coop and rotate them out as needed. This will save y'all some chickens
Cool coupe! Even if it stays a chicken shed, that came out great! Handy dandy, HAVE A GREAT DAY!
The clear plastic roofing panels might help, but it might be to hot. Thinking maybe two
even tho it is warm during the day you are still going to need a heat lamp
Love the barn and chickens
I love the new intro
I have bent metal using clamps and a couple of 2x 4s . Clamp metal in between the 2x4s at the bend line and use a rubber mallet or a hammer to bend the metal that is not in clamped section . Hope my description is clear enough
Love this video you did. Fantastic job building the barn. Love the little chicks. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊❤❤❤
Hi, that is a very nice Barn. Sorry you lost so many. The Homestead is growing . Love and Blessings
So sad that you lost baby chick's. Have a good day.
Awesome job y’all 👍🏻🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸
Maybe you can put a piece of mesh in front of the door to keep the chickens in when you go in and out 😊
Way to go Gary
Very nice little barn..WOAH.....100 chick's😮
Hello Guys I think your channel is great and Gary you are a hard worker I wish my Husband had your hands I’m thinking about doing a raised bed garden soon I love the shed so put me in to the comment drawing God Bless you both and the kids
Baby chicks are so cute
Those chicks are so cute
a bit of plexi-glas and a hairblower, and you can make your own ridgecap that lets the sunshine in :) plexiglas as shutters for the "windows" will do the same there :)
Love your intro!!
Sorry Gary, but all others have removed their new chicks from the box IMMEDIATELY when they got home. Contact the company, good chance they will send replacements. Water container is too big at the start. Use a smaller size for a while. Add apple cider vinegar to water. Google it. Also, add a heat source for short time to play it safe. Don't want to see you loose any more chicks. Good job on the build. Are you sure they can't squeeze out the bottom?
Loved the bloopers. Poor Gary😊
Good job on the chicken shed! They're so cute! Sorry, some didn't make it. The chicken company will probably make it right for you. 😊😊😊
So many babies....they are so cute......hugs
brilliant recycling....lucky chicks
going to need some heat especially at night its spring not reliable heat just yet
maybe reduce free area till bit bigger keep close together for body heat to begin to groy feathers
Maybe use a clear/plastic roofing for one half of the roof, then put the ridge cap on. Just a thought 😊
You have no idea how following your family impacts others! I love y’all and country road cure, and Common with David!!!and Drifting with Dreamers!!!
Well done gary ,were you in a circus by any chance, you and your ladder would draw in a big crowd, those chicks are cute but very loud they have lots of space to grow its a shame you lost so many
Gary, the barn for the chickens is very nice 👍
Oh that was fun! Love the end too! Do they stand behind the deceased? Send more?
Very good work as always Gary!
If you have the scraps from the window cutouts I saw someone create awnings on their coop windows for rain protection.
