I spent 4 weeks on the ground last fall cold prospecting creeks on Vancouver island. Can really relate. Only found specks for the most part but, man, did I have fun. Saw some beautiful scenery, drove some horrendous roads, saw some incredible wildlife, and just about froze my fingers off. Was worth every minute. Thanks for sharing your video!

One useful thing in such a circumstance would be to get on Google Maps on your smartphone before you leave, and download the general area so that it's available on your phone without any internet connection. That way if you end up at an unknown creek, you can see where you are on the downloaded map via GPS, check the name of the creek probably (unless it's unnamed), check the local topography a bit with the Google Maps "terrain" layer, and sort of generally get your bearings.
There are other mapping applications one could use also that let you download different sort of maps for offline access.
I drop pins on Google Maps, save the locations to lists, and add little prospecting notes to the pinned locations, right in Google Maps.

@@TwoToes - Old guy? Heck, people your age -- a bit older I think -- _invented_ the Internet and much of the deep technology underlying these systems. :-)
I tell you though, while smartphones are used for a whole lot of nonsense to be sure, being able to see where you are on the globe to within yards, and being able to see what's around you, and being able to take personal notes about specific locations, is pretty darn useful -- particularly for this hobby.
Geological maps in your pocket out prospecting is pretty cool also -- for contact zones and faults and such.

As to the spot you can't reach anymore because of the dirt road leading to it being washed away, may I do a suggestion mr. Honan? Get a detailed army ordinance map of that area (1:25,000 or 1:50,000) and mark the entry of the path in question (4x4) on it. Then follow on the map where the dirt road leads to. In doing so, you should be able to find the spot you mined, with the creek, the tailings pile and the old mining camp (they should show on the ordinance map). One you find the location on the map (best mark it), you can look for alternative dirt roads or paths, same side of the river or the opposite side, that will bring you as close to the mining spot as you can. Don't give up on the spot!

The wondering whether your guna find out and what is the adventure.when you find something cool whether it be a rock, artefact or some precious metals well that just makes you feel even better but even if you don't you still have the erg to get back there to find something and learn something new.I don't find very much gold but it's all the same buzz looking for something and proving it to yourself that you can find it.then again it's nice to go somewhere with no expectations of finding anything but just being one with nature! Now that's what keeps me ticking owa.great video none the less with that beautiful scenery Gary!!💛🌟✨ ps your crap pan is more than I ever find in one day let alone just 3 pans😂👍

I'm only just starting to prospect, spent the last few months researching where claims have been and where active claims are, reading books on North Idaho gold history. Not as much gold water as I'd imagined, and a lot of it is tied up in claims. So I've got my winter gear on and gone up near some old mines that were primarily silver, but had some gold. Haven't found any yet, but it's so fun reading the stream, test panning, pulling up rocks out the the snow. I've definitely gotten bit by the bug! Like your videos!

Todd told me about your detecting adventures last weekend and who found all the gold (as usual). This video restores my faith in your humanity. Where the heck was Jeff? Those baseball coaching excuses just don't work at this time of year. Want to hear some real whining about how cold the water is? Just wait until the Hawaii contingent gets back up there in the spring. P.S. The nuggets were just a little further up and around the next bend in the creek.

I metal detected in Cave Creek Arizona yesterday and went up a river creek up the mountain and I found an old crevice near a waterfall and man solid hard packed gravel, I mean packed for millions of years and after digging a pan out (nothing). After finding tons of veins of quartz and schist and great topography not a signal, but scrap iron and nails...... Not a good gold producing area .... and I two toe-wed it up the mountains all day and saw mountain goat trails and droppings and not a single gold signal all the way up ..... I guess you can determine quickly with some knowledge if there is gold to be had in an area ......

I have noticed that you use a White's TDI. I have an interest in one and wonder if you might have any comments on it for gold and relics.

Have you ever prospected in Tuolumne County? I know a few rivers out there. Wish I could get back to Ca. to try my luck. I did get about 7 colors in one pan in Moore Creek.

I learned how to pan on the Tuolumne river in 1962. Last time I went that far south to prospect was in the 80's.

I really enjoy your videos Gary. I was wondering though if this is open land and you just stopped along the road or if it is on your claim?

Dan yes he did remind me of the old man in treasure of the Sierra Madre. You do it for the adventure not the gold!Although I’m sure the gold helps a lot

I always enjoy watching your videos , but if you could include approximate dates of when you were out there that would really bring some peace to my soul... i don't know why it bothers me so much not knowing for sure wether you're filming in january or september but... if you would rather not date your videos that is up to you but it would really help me out.

It’s 3yrs later 2023 been up to Camp America 3 times, I have shaken your hand and panned gold in the Yuba after you . I have watched your videos for the last 7 or 8 years . All this to say , Thank You .
You teach well Gary and the subtleties of how much you truly enjoy the forest and its beauty is not lost . I will continue to enjoy my time because your videos stirred up another viewer.

Two toes, your a big inspiration to me, and your message is priceless!! I prospect the same areas as Andrew from #Adventuregold, with out the same success lol, but always having fun, and coming away with colour
It's been hot here lately and the forests have been shut with the fires, but heading this weekend👍👍👍

Two toes I would like to come film some of your country and have you narrate it so we the green horns know what it is you are showing us for instance the open shot you showed us a hill top and I know ive checked out this video several times and didnt know from beans what you were wanting me to see and yeah I want to know but for the guy who is on the ladder about the story you are telling and miss that big a**. Hydraulic work well he might not subscribe you know just watch. I think what I'm trying to say is my brain finaly saw what my eyes had seen several times anyway forget it I don't even have transportation much less a budget to do a video but it was really cool to see that .
