  • Designed in 1953, and taking flight in 1958, the Arrow was one of the most advanced and powerful interceptors of the time, with Mach 2 speeds, and filled with advanced new avionics and flight control technology. It represented remarkable achievements in aerodynamics, computer-assisted flight technology, fabrication, flight-control, engine design, and speed. But, Unfortunately, in 1959 the program was canceled, due to a mix of cost overruns, technical challenges, and Cold War politics and all Arrows were scrapped in favor of Canada adopting the Bomarc surface-to-air missile.

The government made a mistake and all the engineers went to NASA to work on space ship 🇨🇦💯👍🏾😎

This aircraft was a British design, including an all moving tail plane, which the Brits gave to the full specs to America...hence why the program was cancelled, as usual.

@UncommonSense. USA said it was too advanced and unsafe and just stole our technology 😂 typical of America

      lol.. no.
The all moving tail plane was invented by the Americans in 1947 for the Bell X-1.
The Arrow was a delta winged aircraft and had no tail plane at all.
The basic design of the Arrow was used in the American XF-92 dating from the late 1940s and the F-102 that was operational from 1953..

The Avro Arrow or CF-105, for its time was unique. There never was anything like it out there. But like any super power, it never takes them long to get caught up. But this aircraft was OURS, helped a long by the USA in it development, The Avro Arrow proved itself in test flights, to be a helper in keeping those pesky Russian Bombers at bay. 1st introduced on October 4th 1957, which was called Roll-out Day and then took flight with RL25201 on March 25th, 1958. By that time, other aircraft were in development with the U S Airforce that leveled the playing field, but the Avro Arrow was designed to work in All-Weathers to get up north and keep those bombers from entering Canadian Sovereignty and thus keeping North America safe. Although the ending came swift, Feb. 20th 1959, much of the workers and engineers headed south and across the big pond, in what was called the Brain Drain. But no matter what, she was Canadian, by design, craftmanship and flown. If we can just get the Canadian government to have faith in us once again.

All the engineers who worked on the avro arrow went down to NASA and we had the best avionics engineers. So you can say that we helped put the first man on the moon

The cancellation of the Arrow was intimately tied to Canada’s adoption of the CIM-10 Bomarc surface-to-air missile system. By 1959, Ottawa was convinced that the Soviet bomber threat had diminished and that interceptors like the CF-105 were unnecessary; the Bomarc alone would be enough to protect the nation’s airspace. Yet, shortly after the Arrow’s termination, the need for interceptors was back on the agenda. Unfortunately, without its own advanced fighter jet, Canada was forced to shop for a replacement from foreign sources, namely the United States. Most Ironically, just as Bomarc base construction had gotten underway in Canada, the Pentagon began decommissioning America’s own Bomarcs. The missile system it seems was not a very good weapon after all for a majority of reasons, not the least of which, it was most ineffective without its nuclear warhead.

The Arrow was outdated by the time it took its first flight. Missile technology made it obsolete. Also what is the Cold War politics you refer to?

It was better than usa warthog

That's a very silly comparison: the Warthog is not designed for high-altitude interception and the Arrow was not designed for close ground support. Neither was/is good at the other's specialty.

Our government really fuked us over on this one, it could’ve been country changing for us, in a good way obviously, lol!
