    SUCH a great video, Colleen! I wish I could like this video 100 times, as it's just SO true and well spoken. I've graduated 2, and my 3rd child is Katie's age, with 2 younger ones. The saying, "the days are long, but the years are short" has been so true for me, and time with our children really is so fleeting. Relationship being more important than academics is something you don't hear many people saying, but it's extremely important, and I'm so glad you touched on it. Thank you very much for sharing your heart on these important topics, and for your sweet videos each week...love them so much! Take care....Blessings! :)

    When I watched this the first time (yes-I’m Re-watching bc my son is entering HS next year! 😳-I feel you about the time flying) but when I watched the first time, I must’ve missed the part about relationship bc that sounded new and groundbreaking to me. I mean I’ve thought about this, and agree, and I’ve naturally been tending this way. It’s so good to be told to prioritize this.
    Boys are different than girls....I’m super close to my daughters. But my son started pulling away a bit in Jr High and I feel like I’ve had to be even more persistent with him to let him know, this relationship IS important!! Important to me! And he doesn’t realize how important it will be to him. And now ending 8th grade, I feel like we’re finally on the downhill in that way.
    I suggested to him that next year, I plan a 4 day week for my younger daughters, and the 5th day I’d set aside for him and me to go conference. I would give him most of the attention that day to discuss his assignments, discuss his books, just re-group together. And he actually told me he’d like that!!! I feel like I’ve won a major battle! 😉
    But that was very wise counsel. We all want children who look back with fond memories on their time at home, and who WANT to come back! That’s way more important to me than a super smart kid, who goes away to college and doesn’t care where he goes geographically after he graduates. I’d like children to also prioritize family over career and I think that’s the ultimate end to your point. Relationship = family. Academics = career. Which is more important to the Lord?
    Thank you so much for being on UA-cam. Like others have said, there isn’t enough on UA-cam about these upper grades. But I also think it’s bc more moms quit and send their kids to school for the upper grades. I’m not in that group, though! 😉

      I’ve heard the same thing from all my friends with boys that they go through the pulling away stage in middle school but then they come back around later. I love your idea of prioritizing him on the 5th school day! Yes! Family is so much more important than career! That seems to be a lost idea anymore.

    Very informative! Last year when you talked about portfolios I decided that even though I don’t live in a state with many requirements (especially portfolios) that I would still keep a sampling of my daughter’s school work along with a curriculum list and attendance log for each year. She was in Kindergarten, so now I’ll have records for her from the very beginning. ♥️👍🏻

    I love that you talk about homeschooling high school--I feel like there can be a lack of information about this stage on youtube! Our family now has kid #7 in high school, and homeschool high school is actually going to be the topic of my video coming out tomorrow, haha! I think you are very right to consider intentionally the GOAL of your high school. Graduation requirements are important, for sure, but building critical thinking skills will set her up for a lifetime of being able to engage well with whatever she learns.

    I really needed this information being that, it’s our first year of homeschooling and, I will have a 1st, 6th, and 9th grader next year. Living in Texas, with very lax homeschooling rules, I still want to be prepared. Thanks to your previous video on keeping portfolios for each child, I started that already. I just feel like you never know when rules may change. The last thing I’d want to do is have to go back and attempt to remember what we did. My 9th grader will be college bound as well. What does Katie want to go to college to become, and will you tailor her senior year to help with that? In regards to prerequisites/credits for her first year of college. Hopefully this makes sense! 😅 I’m so thankful for your videos!

      We plan to do some dual enrollment next year to do some of the general ed. requirements. Katie wants to get into real estate, and she plans to get a business degree.

    This was so helpful!!! My oldest is 5th grade this year, so high school is a ways off BUT I know it will be here before I know it. I’m saving this wealth of information. Thank you so much for doing this video Colleen! I can’t believe Katie is going to be a senior next year. You have done a phenomenal job homeschooling her. I think she was a sophomore when I started watching your channel. Time does fly. 💕

    I’ve graduated 4 students and will graduate my 5th next year. High school does require more commitment to staying home and working on study habits, skills and discipline. I find the skills my students have learned have been invaluable. Relationship is key to a lifelong friendship with your children. It takes patience, listening and letting them fail at times but the reward is so beautiful when they mature into adults with.children and families. We have enjoyed have teenagers and are so thankful for the opportunity to homeschool them all from start to finish. My last child will enter high school next year. I look forward to enjoying the journey with her as my last.

In NY, Long Island where i live, from 8-12 is high school. I’m very nervous about homeschooling her in a higher grade, btw, do you have private email so that I can reach out to you for more information of homeschooling high schooler. Thank you

    Yes, yes, YES!! My daughter is now closing in on finishing 9th grade, and I can feel my heart hurting at how fast it is going. I am trying to savor every single day that we have.
    I don’t live in a state with any requirements other than a declaration of intent to homeschool each year, but I completely agree that high schoolers need a portfolio. Not only does it give us something to show for their years in high school, but it also gives THEM something to show for all of their hard work!
    I truly appreciate these sit-down videos. You’re a wealth of knowledge, so thanks for sharing this with us!🤗

    Great video! I 💯 agree about relationships. We started in middle school and are reaping the rewards of “best friends, talking, non hiding, non back talking teen”..we have had one go to PS and they are completely different...A tip I’ve done since were under an umbrella (they’ll issue report card with all info I put on it) is also write out the scope and sequence of each curriculum and put in that grade folder.

    Thank you for this and all your videos! I am new to homeschooling this year with my 6th and 9th graders and your videos have been extremely helpful. I also purchased homeschool Planet because of you and it has been super! I would love to see a video on how you create and utilize the transcript feature on homeschool planet. I would really love to use that format since it's already in there but I'm not quite sure how to exactly go about it. Also I was wondering with how you document ballet I would like to document my students private music lessons as a Fine Arts High School course and give a high school credit but I'm not sure how to go about that.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому +1

      I have a video on transcripts and I’m pretty sure I showed homeschool planet there and how to do it. For fine arts, you need to count hours. Generally 150 hours= 1 credit or 75 hours = 1/2 credit. I counted hours on homeschool planet by creating a a class and using the time feature. That allows you to do a report later with the hours totaled. The default for a new class is timed, and I believe the default time is 30 min per class so you might need to adjust that. I hope this helps.

    Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with homeschooling. My daughter will be in the 9th grade next year. You are so right... where did the time go?!? I was wondering if you need a portfolio for any classes that are taken online through an accredited school. My daughter will be taking Dive science (you were the one that helped us make that choice). But her other classes (we think) will be through an online school. So I'm wondering if I need to prepare a portfolio for her non-science classes? Thanks for any help you can provide!

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому

      I think it depends on how easily you can access the information. If you have access in a different way (than a portfolio) it should be fine.

      We just do the end of the year. We are required to do number grades to for gpa calculation.

    • @tonjaduncan0315
      @tonjaduncan0315 3 роки тому

      Ok. Guess I need to check with the Texas homeschool coalition to find out what we should do about report cards. I don’t think we’re actually required to keep them, but they probably have some good suggestions. Or I could check with a couple of colleges that my daughter is thinking about going to, and see what type of grades they prefer for GPA. Thank you again so much!

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому +1

      You'll definitely need the transcript, and the report card is what you would use to complete the transcript. If you are homeschool planet users, you can do both inside of homeschool planet with no additional cost. Generally if you do a letter grade, it puts your gpa at a disadvantage. For instance, "A" is translated as 95, where she might have actually scored 97. In SC, the gpa difference for a college prep class would be 4.5 for the 95 and 4.7 for the 97. So you can see where the gpa would be higher with actual scores vs just letter grades. I hope this makes sense. Happy to chat privately if you need to.

      @@simplejoyfilledliving that's fascinating. Up north we simply have A=4, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, etc. (With +1 added for AP courses). A 100% is just as good as a 94% here. That being said, that's also what colleges do, so it makes that transition easier.

    Another great video!! I’m beyond stressed! I have a rising 9th grader😅
    Curious how some kids end up doing Algebra 2 in 9th grade? He will be doing Algebra 1. Do kids just skip a year of curriculum? I have a younger son that I’m using Saxon 5/4 with. My rising 9th grader is switching from Saxon to Shorman for 9th grade.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому

      Some math curriculum like Saxon and Shormann integrate geometry with algebra. So geometry is completed once algebra 1 and 2 are completed without a separate geometry course. So my daughter did Algebra 1 in 8th, algebra 2 in 9th and the geometry credit is also issued that year.

    Another question for you! We are currently in CC in the challenge program. I’ve decided it’s not the right fit for him. He will continue Latin because he loves it 🤣 Curious what you suggest for writing? I am not a fan of LTW but I love IEW. Also, what’s your favorite history curriculum?
    Thanks!

    • @stacyfausett5436
      @stacyfausett5436 3 роки тому

      I don’t know what level your son is in but my son is in 5th semester of college and he uses his LTW writing ALL. THE.TIME! It’s the skill of thinking that your working on in LTW. I love IEW as well but LTW is been a very useful skill for my college son.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому

      After 2 years of LTW in 7th and 8th, we decided it was enough. Katie switched to The Good and the Beautiful High School Year 1 language arts in the middle of 9th grade (when she left CC). She used it for writing as well but continued to write in the LTW and IEW styles when appropriate. However in my opinion, TG&TB has enough writing instruction where most kids would be fine without LTW and IEW and just using TG&TB. My daughter just used skills she had gained in previous school years when she switched to TG&TB.
      My favorite history curriculum by far is The Good and The Beautiful (because of the continual reference back to original source documents which is very important to me). However it is difficult to use for high school in the way that they have laid it out. That being said, I do have a video that explains multiple ways to use it for high school if that is of interest to you. So we used Master Books American and World History as our main text books and we used TG&TB 10th-12 grade explorers as a supplement (since I already had that curriculum). I picked assignments and projects from those explorers to make her American and World History classes honors level. Another reason that I made Master Books the main text was because it had assignments and tests, which made it easier to assess the courses and issue grades. I hope this made sense.
      For World Geography, American Government, and Economics (next year), we use Abeka. Those are all 1/2 credit courses and Abeka does a great job on those..
