  • Raphael's painting the School of Athens has often been associated with the enlightenment, secularism and intellectualism, but did you know that this mural is in the Vatican, in what was the pope's personal quarters? Here you'll see many ancient philosophers from Plato to Socrates. Raphael is announcing an era of secularism and humanism inside the walls of the Vatican.

    When I studied Raphael in high school, the emphasis was on his use of perspective, and he was a master at it. Most paintings up to his time were flat, two-dimensional. Perspective was a radical change.
    (Also, Raphael died on his birthday, April 6, which we happen to share)

    watched this video for a school research , enjoyed it alot more than i thought i would . this is actually amazing and real knowledge..i am speechless, how did rafael manage to put so many important figures in one single painting full of life and symbolism.. this picture deserves more credit, it literally resumes and summarizes the whole movemment of the renasssaince , truly impressive and fascinanting
    i am in love with the idea and love put into this,all these important people like artsists and philosophers in one single piece feels so touching and genuine.

    I did a double take after I saw the subscriber count, these videos are fantastic and you guys definitely deserve recognition, I would love it if you made a video about Jacques-Louis David or Camuccini. Best of luck in the future.

      people have to stop evaluating things based on the amount of likes and views it gets. we all know that's completely unrelated.. and beyond that, I think it's actually disrespectful and demeaning to come here to just coment about how you think the numbers are low instead of talking about the actual content of the video.

    Love the video, I learned a lot. The Renaissance is fascinating. This format you guys use, taking one piece of art to talk not just about it, but about the context and movement, is awesome! Thanks! Def subscribed.

    I am fairly certain the central figures are actually Plato and Aristotle (not Da Vinci). Da Vinci's face was used as Plato's face because of their similarities. What reference are you using?

    • @MrShawngrenier
      @MrShawngrenier 5 років тому +21

      The central figures are in fact Plato and Aristotle (as pointed by the narrator), but the person modelling for Plato is Da Vinci (the same way Donato Bramante was used to paint Euclid). I think the point is that the Renaissance is the rebirth of such thinkers, that the intellectual growth of Antiquity is repeated in the Renaissance through new thinkers.

    You got so many things wrong about who the characters are. Brutally under-researched.

    I thought Plato was in the middle with Aristotle. Love the music on the end though, what's the name of it?

    • @TheCanvasArtHistory
      @TheCanvasArtHistory  4 роки тому +6

      Yes! Plato (modelled after Da Vinci) and Aristotle are in the middle! The song is The People by Kyle Preston :)
