I fought Alduin on level 43 on the mountain top, and he still wrecked me badly. Finally I just had to put it at Novice difficulty. And I still struggled.
His name means 'Phantom Sky Hunt'. He can breathe both fire and frost. Sahloknir is level dependent If the Dragonborn is past level 20, Sahloknir will spawn as a Blood Dragon. (PC and Xbox 360 confirmed). Sahloknir looks like a Frost Dragon, but he can still use both Fire and Frost Breaths.

Fun fact, Hircine is worshipped as a god by the Khajiit and is known as the "Hungry Cat" in their tongue. Similarly, they also worship Sheogorath (Sheggorath, the Skooma Cat), Hermaeus Mora (Hermorah, the Lord of the Tides) and other Daedra along with most of the Divines.
Usually he is a Revered Dragon for me & in one case he ended up being a Legendary Dragon. Oddly enough, he still dies ridiculously fast despite being such a high class.
You can summon the undead Dragon Durnehviir to fight alongside you (Dawnguard DLC), and you can call upon Odahviing to aid you (main game story quest).

The first three times he'll teach you the words of the "Soul Tear" shout, but after that he'll be summoned as an ally. As for Odahviing, you'll learn to call him during the main quest as you learn the "Call Dragon" shout. He'll come to your aid whenever you call him.
