Cheers, Mitch
Love that handscrew tip!
I should have invested in handscrew manufacturers 😉
Hey Mitch, again and again: Great Knowledge. Thank you! Greetings from Germany
My pleasure.
Merci Mitch! Cheers !
Thanks for the video Mitch; I always appreciate your content.
Cheers!
Ultra smooth end grain is always beautiful to see
Isn't it. Thanks John
Nice job mate
Cheers Ken
Good video. Thank-you.
Cheers
Nice one mitch the tool steel is my favourite option in this video. Very nice demo on the card scraper to.
Thanks Peter
Thanks for sharing Mitch. Cheers!!
I have also seen people use a metal file to get a smooth surface on end grain.
I regularly use metal files for final shaping, so why I didn't think if that I don't know.
Also a metal file ground to a sharp ninety degrees and used as a scraper works well. Some people do the same with a chisel. Same idea.
Great video Mitch. Some of these techniques are very unique and not often seen when talking about endgrain, but very useful tips.
Thanks Karl. It's not everyday that we face a sizable chunk of endgrain, but I thought it was worth showing some options
Card scraper : since I am doing it like the one from LAP, it’s a beauty to work with .
Good to hear
@@mitchwoodwork also: less hard on rheumatism/arthritis. No bending of the card scraper almost
@@ikust007 do you have a link to any more information on the one from LAP. Having trouble finding anything.
13:00 that’s the spirit!
Dogs doooooo dahs on the hand screw
Cheers Peter
Also: I deeply like glass. I keep my glass cuter close to me. Therefore I can choose easily the profil I am looking for .
Glass is a great scraper, but I've never been good at cutting it. I'm more likely to hurt myself than create the perfect profile 😂
@@mitchwoodwork i hear yah!
This seems like a better way than buying a entire expensive card scraper system. Also getting away from sandpaper which makes fine dust that gets everywhere.
I would be cautious. Even when using a scraper rhat is perfect and making ribbons, it is still also producing fine dust, so lung protection or other dust management is still advisable.
Additionally, this method, like using planes, will vary in smoothness based on wood species and grain pattern. Sometimes you can get it very smooth, sometimes smooth but wavy following grain, and other times sanding will still be very necessary depending on how smooth a result you are looking for.
I see Karl has already pointed out that there will still be some fine dust produced no matter what technique, so as with sanding a dust mask is a good precaution.
I do like to avoid sanding because of the inevitable abrasive dust like silica or aluminum oxide, but sometimes it's useful.
Edit: Scrap my first comment! He does wet it with meths at 11:59. I'll get my coat. Original Message: "Haven't watched all the way through yet, but with the plane have you tried wetting the wood first as recommended by Crimson Guitars [on UA-cam] ? Simple, and seems to work for me. Thoughts?"
Cheers David. I don't recall seeing Ben do that, but you've reminded me of one of the few channels I really liked to dip into a few years back.
