It is rumoured that when Benny Hill died , all he had in his home was a TV an armchair a bed and a few clothes and old theatre memorabilia collection.... he had lived very frugally for years and travelled a lot and was reputedly generous to his friends. ... we all have a lot of possessions we really don't need . When my kids were small and they harped on about wanting something I would make them work and save for it ( even when they were little ) The deal was , when they got to half saved, I would give them the other half.... by the time they saved up , they had changed their minds. When you have despots dictators and idiot multi billionaires ruling the World.... I think we have cause to be very concerned....
Jane, I am absolutely loving your Vlogmas posts. It’s making the lead up to Xmas so special for me this year. For the past 7 years we haven’t put up our Xmas tree or decorations as we go to have Xmas with daughter and family 6 hrs drive away in Sydney. Well this year we decorated!! Wow what a difference to our attitude. Hubby and I are singing Xmas carols and love seeing the tree and house lit up and festive. We are really embracing the season instead of focusing our thoughts on over consumerism by many people etc. I have bought and made consumables for gifts and for our 4 teen granddaughters and our beautiful daughter we bought gift vouchers for High Tea at a gorgeous teahouse. Of course I’m going too 😊 and I hope to make a memory that we’ll all treasure for years to come. ❤ Our 2 adult grandsons and partners are receiving gift vouchers to their favourite steakhouse. They love to eat out. I’m so happy not to add more stuff into loved ones lives and sharing precious time together is worth more than any physical gift to me. Look forward to more vlogmas posts. You’re doing very well keeping up with them. Thankyou. Lorraine Australia xxx
Amy D lived about 25 miles from me in the 1990s. She wrote the Tightwad Gazette newsletter from 1990 to 1996. The book was published in the late 1990s. I was a subscriber from the beginning. It changed my life! I met her circa 2009. She and Jim were happily retired and still living frugally. The 6 kids were all grown and living near enough to visit every Sunday. She was ( and I'm still is) a very nice person. It was a pleasure meeting her! There is a sequel to Your Money of Your Life. It is called Getting a Life.
Love the Tightwad Gazette! I have both volumes and I used to get her newsletters before she wrote the books . Lots of good advice that helped us out. Her message made me not feel bad about frugality. My husband and I are in good shape in our retirement because of her message and advice. My grown-up children, too. No wonder your channel attracted me!
Fantastic book recommendations. Thank you. It is important to think outside the box and not follow the masses. My two dogs are all the family I have now, so they are spoilt. They have an advent calendar each, which might seem crazy to some, but the joy and pleasure we all get from the after dinner treat time has brought me lots of joy.
I agree with you Jane! I spend on my horses…my downfall, but wear old clothes and don’t buy much else….someone commented on my choice of purse as if it was a high end prestige thing. I told her they were all over the charity shops…I guess I didn’t make a new friend….!
Great book selection - thanks Jane. Ben Fogle went to Ireland a few years ago as part of the series - 'New Lives in the Wild' & visited Mark Boyle - The Moneyless Man. Mark was v interesting, articulate with his opinions in a lovely quiet manner. Video is well worth watching. Regards. Rose 🪷
Yes, I think being mindful with our money. I think for some the problems arises when we are constantly going out to eat , continue to buy clothes we don't need, the list goes on. People could easily waste 5 or6 hundred dollars a month. Just my thoughts.
I have theTightwad Gazette Newsletters.I loved getting them in the mail. I could hardly wait for the next issue. I also have your book,I asked for it last Christmas and my grandaughter gave it to me. I enjoy watching your vidoes.
That's it- it is seen as a bit weird to be frugal, lean into it I reckon 🙂 I re-read "The Art of Frugal Hedonism" each year to keep me on track and feeling like life is GOOD!
Oh no, not at all lecturery Jane. Like you say it is so important we all do our bit to make our impact less on the planet. My interest in frugality came from my desire to look after the planet and protect the precious resources. Frugality came as a side benefit and to me it just makes sense, doesn’t seem eccentric. I’m going to search my library for some of these books, I’m sure I could do more 💚 Thanks for a great vlog 🥰
I just searched about Dolly Freed and found this: Dolly Freed is the pseudonymous author of Possum Living, a classic book on how to live frugally and self-sufficiently. She is also a NASA engineer, environmental educator, and ..... Wow! That was a surprise!

Thanks for watching! I love tea out. Meals out make really nice gifts as a treat when people may be feeling the pinch.

Well said.
I'm currently reading Patrick Grant's book 'Less' which echoes a lot of what you've said. Worth a read!
Some good book choices there. Thanks Jane for another interesting video. Happy birthday Archie

Thanks for the book recommendations. I've read some of them, but some are new. I always liked Jeff Yeager too.

I love Kath Kelly's book and have read it several times.
