  • A compilation of the best songs and lays in Tolkien's Middle-earth, along with great book-based original illustrations and fanart. Enjoy!
    0:13 - A Elbereth Gilthoniel I
    4:09 - Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold
    11:04 - Legolas's Song of the Sea
    13:46 - Song of the Mounds of Mundburg
    19:46 - Galadriel's Lament for Eldamar
    22:35 - Lament of the Rohirrim / lonelymountainband
    25:21 - The Fall of Gil-Galad (correction: this version of the song is sung by 'Anois' a band from the Netherlands - NOT the Tolkien Ensemble; apologies for the mistake
    27:48 - Lament for Boromir
    33:32 - The Lay of Nimrodel [and Amroth]
    39:06 - Tom Bombadil's Song (one of them)
    42:28 - Song of Beren and Luthien
    48:29 - Burial Song of Theoden-King
    53:58 - A Elbereth Gilthoniel II
    1:00:11 - Gimli's Song of Durin and Moria / lonelymountainband
    1:04:58 - The Riddle of Strider
    1:08:19 - The Old Walking Song [Frodo's Version]
    1:10:47 - The Farewell Song of Merry and Pippen
    1:13:58 - The [tipsy-Elven] Barrel Song
    1:16:37 - Bilbo's Last Song
    My longest, most exhausting video ever. I would have included more songs from 'The Hobbit' but there are not many good versions of them on the net; plus the video was getting too long for my computer's liking.

    I was weeping when the Silmarillion was coming to an end. I was in denial, I didn't finish the book for weeks, It felt like Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond, Mándos, Irmo, Beren, Luthien, and all the rest were my very dear friends. I cried when the last elves left Middle Earth. Like they were leaving it to it's fate, they did there job, and now it was time to part. And I cried again when the book left the rest of Middle Earth. Like it was screening out, giving up on it, I felt myself being torn away, I didn't want to leave.. now I'm back to my reality, and it is bittersweet, but I realize I can just read it all again

      The Silmarillion really is a masterpiece. The actions and the deeds of the Eldar and the Edain never fail to move me to tears. Fingolfin battling Morgoth, Finrod battling Sauron and the werewolf, and Ecthelion battling Gothmog are awe inspiring. Tolkien is an artist who has my utmost respect.

    This video is probably my number one favorite collection of "songs and lays" from Tolkien's works. And this visual art as well, simply and absolutely breath-taking! I feel like I'm being taken down a path that's as familiar as a mother or father, and yet it's also as if I've never really been there before! It's like I'm watching and listening to his writing, something I never thought would be possible. God bless!

    27:47
    Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows,
    The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes.
    ‘What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight?
    Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight?’
    ‘I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey.
    I saw him walk in empty lands, until he passed away
    Into the shadows of the North. I saw him then no more.
    The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor.’
    ‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar,
    But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’
    From the mouths of the sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones;
    The wailing of the gulls it hears, and at the gate it moans.
    ‘What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?
    Where now is Boromir the fair? He tarries and I grieve!’
    ‘Ask me not of where he doth dwell-so many bones there lie
    On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky;
    So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea.
    Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!’
    ‘O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south,
    But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth.’
    From the Gate of Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls;
    And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls.
    ‘What news from the North, O mighty wind, do you bring to me today?
    What news of Boromir the Bold? For he is long away.’
    ‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought.
    His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought.
    His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest;
    And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast.’
    ‘O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze
    To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.’

    Oh my God this is... this is stunning! I have the extended version of the Hobit soundtrack. Where was this haunting rendition of “The Misty Mountains?” I know this might make me sound like a nutcase, but the imagery of what the elves were able to do in the making of their jewelry and crowns has left me almost in tears. Tolkien was a brilliant writer. I thought the cultures he wove were rich, but this! This stuff is on a whole other level. I am blind and getting hold of a version of this huge work that hasn’t been hacked to death by audio-production companies is almost impossible. If I went for a Braille copy I’d have to give it its own bookcase. I’m not kidding. Haha! Just to give you an idea, the Holy Bible is fourteen two and a half inch volumes. Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix is something like nine one inch thick volumes. Thank you so much for posting this. Wording this brilliant needs to be sung in order to give it its full life. Can you tell I’m a writer yet? LOL!

    Such beauty deserves a bit more than just fifty-six thousand views (heh, now it's even above hundred views) in my opinion, although music that kind shouldn't be viewed by those who are simply spreading chaos across the lands (trolling).
    Maybe it shouldn't be too popular, only the ones understanding it's majesty are worthy listening to it? Time shall answer, I suppose.

    • @crazyrobotlady3391
      @crazyrobotlady3391 5 років тому

      Indeed! Were it possible, I would clasp hands with you in full agreement. Such beauty requires a special appreciation that is seldom seen in these days of too many screens and babbling streams of words that mean nothing and are as lacking of true substance as vapor. These words hold a magic and precision not practiced in most modern literature,. We will probably never find their like again this side of mortal life.

    I havent been able to find the source for the song: "The old walking song [Frodo's version] yet. But it is an alternate version of the original "The road goes ever on" by Bilbo Baggings. More information can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_Goes_Ever_On_%28song%29. but I have found the lyrics of the song for those who are interested:
    Still round the corner there may wait
    A new road or a secret gate
    ,And though I oft have passed them by
    ,A day will come at last when I
    Shall take the hidden paths that run
    West of the Moon, East of the Sun.

      This song is titled "A Walking Song." The first version is in the chapter "Three Is Company" in The Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo's changed verse is in "The Grey Havens" in The Return of the King. It is a different song than The Road Goes Ever Ever On, which is titled The Old Walking Song.

It was one of the highlights in my early musical life! Oh, but I was blessed to belong to various choral and symphonic groups, many of which I've had so many great times and grew so much from; spiritually, scholastically and socially. Misty mountain songs was one of the only good things about the new Hobbit movies.

      Agreed. The first movie was OK...I hated the second one (except when Bilbo and Smaug talk) and as for the BOTFA I'm going to rent it from the Red Box when it comes out on DVD. Jackson has turned Middle-Earth into his own over-blown, fanfiction, cash-cow CGI project. Hopefully he will never get his hands on the Silmarillion or The Children of Hurin. Hopefully.

      thewolfpoet Ya, its annoying. The Lord of the Rings volume wasn't bad. Why can't they keep going in the style of those? Maybe there's something I'm missing.

    • @hermionejeangranger7881
      @hermionejeangranger7881 9 років тому +13

      thewolfpoet I completely agree. The Lotr trilogy was pure gold (both books and movies) because it was true to the books. The Hobbit, on the other hand, included an unnecessary love triangle, Tauriel (who shouldn't even exist) and Legolas (who wasn't even supposed to be in it either). One of the worst parts was at the end when Thranduil mentions Strider. Strider was probably only a child still, so how on Earth did Thranduil know about him!? I heard that they were going to make the Simarilion into a TV series, although I don't know whether this is true or not

      Hermione Jean Granger I still remember reading the books for the first time as a kid. It was so amazing to read the stories for the first time long before the films. The purity of the story still stays in my mind. When you only read the books, the story is timeless and never gets corrupted.
