  • JMC workers in Hanimaadhoo on Strike!
JMC projects (India) employees currently engaged in the development of Hanimaadhoo international airport have stopped their work in protest.
The workers stated that the protest is due to them not getting medical assistance required and the company being negligible in providing them with food.
"Healthcare is not provided when we get sick. Even when we request to send us home, they tell us to contact our family and go home on our own, and they will not pay any salary. The food they bring has gone bad and there are worms and parasites in the food." A participant of the protest informed Gohkolhu.
Our team also found a well containing drinking water for workers that had parasitic worms in them.
"We are cooking here by burning firewood, imagine the heat that we are subjected to. How can humans work in such conditions. And when we tell them that we can't work in these conditions, they are telling us to go home on our own, or work in the current state." A JMC employee who works in the kitchen said to Gohkolhu.
The protesting workers also informed our team that, heavy smoke from the kitchen makes it difficult to breathe in the mess room and the workers suffer daily while having their meals. In addition, their sewer system is overflowing causing a lot of Hygiene concerns among the workers.
Members of the protest are saying that no human should be made to suffer such inhumane conditions and they will be on strike until their demands are met.
It is important to note that this is not the first time JMC workers on Hanimaadhoo International Airport project have protested and gone on strike.
