Interlaken - lakeside walk around the Brienzersee

- I've just arrived in Interlaken and checked into my hotel, but it's too nice to stay in. As I have an Interrail ticket, then a little hop on a local train is essentially free, and I noticed there was a really lovely lakeside path by the Brienzersee. So, cue a quick reversal back out to the lakeside and a really lovely little walk on a particularly warm late afternoon in March.
Join me as we ride out and then walk back around the lake!
Departure: Interlaken Ost, Switzerland
Destination: Niederried, Switzerland
Date of Travel: March 2024
Operator: Die Zentralbahn (zb)

What a stunningly beautiful place. Everything just looks so clean and fresh.. and that scenery… wowzers
Couldn't put it better myself! Thanks for coming along 👍
I enjoy all your videos, but this is hands down my favorite! I love the combination of riding a train and then having a walk, especially with those beautiful sights along the way...bonus points for kitty and waterfalls!
This is also my favourite video from Johnny. Why? Because he is doing what the Swiss do! Using their outstanding public transport to go for a work in splendid scenery!
Thanks! It was a lovely evening and a lovely walk... and yes, the waterfalls and the pussy cat were lovely bonuses!
Thank you. A nice full stop to the day. Beautiful.
Indeed it was!
Thanks for watching along 👍
Imagine waking up to this every morning wow!
That would be ok wouldn't it!
Thanks for watching 👍
Brought back memories from when I was at school .I’m 73 now
Pleased to bring back some (hopefully) good memories!
Thanks for watching 👍
A wonderful video beautiful place. Thanks for putting up.
You are very welcome. Thank you so much for watching 👍
Thank you for another great adventure, bringing me back to when I stayed at Herr Balhmer’s hostel in Interlaken in the 80s. And all that American Football practice keeping you in shape for that steep climb.
Yes it was steep, but it was a good workout 😃
I was very impressed with Interlaken. So many cool places on your doorstep!
Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you Johnny for an absolutely wonderful video. You behaved exactly as the Swiss do when they go out for a hike. You started from your base (Interlaken) and travelled to point A (Niederried) provisionally intending to walk to point B (Ringgenberg) but knowing that you could change your mind as the taktfahrplan effectively guarantees that every sizeable village gets at least an hourly service of public transport 365 days a year. (Ringgenberg also has a bus every 30 minutes to Interlaken, and in summer the much less frequent boat service.)
Thanks Roger. As you say it is so easy to do trips like this with the brilliant public transport system.
A little single track line like that round the lake in other countries might get a train every two hours... not conducive at all to a short "before dinner" hike.
I hear people say "well the Swiss can do that cos they are rich". I tend to be of the opinion that actually "yes, the Swiss are rich and so have _chosen_ to do that" - a lot of other wealthy countries do not have this model and are culturally all the poorer for it.
That's the end of my Swiss content for now... but plans are being made for another return 😃
@@JohnnyHooverTravels Thank you Johnny. The points you make in your second paragraph are of crucial importance. I would add that wealthy and/or important Swiss regularly use public transport. The Swiss joke, 'The Person sitting next to you on the train could be the President of the Confederation'. Five years ago I travelled from Lausanne to Bern sitting next to an important looking lady. Three hours later I saw her again on the evening TV news. She was/is Karin Keller-Sutter, since 2019 a member of the seven-person Federal Cabinet, and this year (2024) vice-president of the confederation.

I had a holiday in Brienz as a schoolboy , never forgot it and always hoped to go back when I was rich and idle . Neither happened .
Brilliant country , in many respects .
Yes, i was so pleased to be able to visit.
Thanks for watching 👍
Switzerland is so beautiful that the views sometimes don't even look real. We're amazing you made your train. We'd have been stopping every few feet, too.
Yes, i could have been there all day. It was only hunger in the end that drew me on!
Beautiful. My son and I went to Switzerland last year, stayed on the Thunersee. I haven't ever been anywhere like it. Even the bus shelters were nice!
Yes it really is lovely there. The Swiss to put a big effort into making their public spaces so nice.
Thanks for watching 👍
a few years back we stayed in a hotel up in the mountains above Interlaken (in Beatenberg) with a view over the mountains and the Thunersee, it was awesome.
Yes, i loved it there and plan to return.
Thanks for watching 👍
Great video from Switzerland 🤩👍🏼

Loved that ! Wondered if you'd done any of your famous "Ride out Walk back " trips on your Swiss excursion . This is definitely my favourite. Excellent video
Thanks! Not sure how "famous" my ride out, walk backs are but I'll take that!
Thanks for coming along 👍
Beautiful. I sense that, like me, you're not done with Switzerland yet. 🤣 Cheers,
Nope. There's talk of Mark and i returning "when it's really snowy" 😃
@@JohnnyHooverTravelsFunny, I was just thinking I need to return when it's LESS snowy ... I mean, either/or! 😎
Stunning place!
Yes indeed! Thanks for watching 👍
Your videos are very good chance for introduction of your places ❤️
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say.
And you too for watching 👍
A very nice walk 😊

Switzerland and the best scenery for a good train ride! Another nice video. Just finished my video to Geneva!!! Deutsche Bahn DRAMA!!! LOL!!
I have onlt been on the roll-on roll-off ferries that cross the Zurichsee, but they offer great views of the environs.
When i return i will try the boats. This was definitely only my "first", trip...
Thanks for watching 👍
Great Video Johnny
Cheers Paul 👍
An extra Monday treat, lovely. Everything looked so fresh and clean along the path, didn`t it. Oh, and probably the kitty didn`t speak English :D
Loved the walk and loved editing it too. It felt like i got to do the walk twice!
Good point about kitty 😉
The Brienzersee is a beautiful area of Switzerland
and it is not a surprise that the British sort of colonised the area
for winter sports and summer hiking
creating one of the first tourism hotspots in the mid to late 19th century.
We did a lot of late afternoon - walks around towns
like Meiringen - which was nice and flat
(for my partner)
as the place we were staying didn't have
television or wifi LOL
So when we did our big visit - I polished off
a chunky biography of Friedrich Engels
and two other books as well in a week
plus on a trip to Fribourg from there
I picked up Rousseau's Émile
as one of my university students
was doing research on it and I wanted to know more.
Yes it was lovely,
and i hope to return soon.
Always pleased to hear that this was something you and your partner used to do too.
Do let me know if you have any special requests for routes or walks that will help bring back memories.
Best wishes to you both 👍
The catenary doesn’t double as a power supply as you‘d think (6:20), the rail electric grid is at 16.7Hz as opposed to the usual 50Hz, so they sometimes (often) carry additional rail power lines as they can’t just hook into the normal power grid
@@genoobtlp4424 thank you so much for that clarification. I really appreciate it 👍
And thanks for watching 👍
