    Compare the interpretations of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra to the ones of Orchestra Mozart under the direction of Claudio Abbado. Which do you like better?

      Love both interpretations! However, I gotta hand it to Freiburg Baroque Orchestra on this one. Everything about it just fits so perfectly well. The tempo the passion and the idea of playing music as one whole not as individual parts! I feel you just get the whole package listening to these talented men and women! It really is a treat. Not to say that the other group didn't have it but these guys set the bar!

    This is only the second performance I've heard from these guys and they're already my favorite. The shaping and dynamics toward the end of the first movement were gripping. It looks like the ideal Baroque performance: small group, just big enough to add a little chorus effect; no conductor calling all the shots, just the ensemble watching each other (mostly); with the modern-day advantage of no idiot nobles yakking all the way through.

      I'm sort of partial to Borodin, a chemist who wrote music in his spare time, and whose first string quartet (first movement, especially) includes fugato passages that Bach might have written on a good day. Still, Bach was probably the greatest. On the other hand, he was influenced by the likes of Buxtehude....

      Dude, you need a lesson in music history. Bach was born in 1685, died in 1750. So he was only 15 in 1700. How did you get the idea that this music is from the 1600s?

    I hope that you all particularly enjoy the Baroque style that this group uses. Notice the violinists don't have chin rests on their instruments and aren't clamping on with their chins, just resting on the shoulder, while the cellists are holding the instruments just with their knees, rather than having a peg on the bottom and putting it on the floor. So they can't "saw" on the instrument as hard as they could otherwise.
    Most if not all of them are using baroque bows, which are lighter than traditional bows. Notice they have a convex curve, whereas a modern bow is concave. This enables, even demands lighter, quicker bowing. Some of the violinist even "choke up" on the frog, allowing for an even more delicate touch. It looks like they're all on gut strings, making it one of the cleaner performances I've heard. It's easy to squeak on gut strings.
    Would have been lovely to hear this live. What fun. Bach rules.

    • @jangerston
      @jangerston 2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for this clarification. I first noticed the convex bows (violas and violins) held further from the frog than those educated in the US were taught And, of course, the lighter touch with the hand above the bow rather than "balancing" the bow with the thumb below and resting against the frog. Then, of course, no chin rests, which I could not imagine playing without (in the days that I played viola).

      No. Bach had previously met the Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt, and sent him these pieces on spec from Cothen, perhaps to gain further commissions. Bach never heard the pieces performed and it's likely the Margrave never did either.

    • @herrickinman9303
      @herrickinman9303 2 роки тому +2

      @@davidblackburn3396 The so-called Brandenburg Concertos are merely minor, last minute updates to concertos composed for, or at least performed by, the virtuoso musicians at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Koethen, when Bach was his Kapellmeister from 1717-1723. When Bach sent the margrave these concertos, he even reused the Coethen wrapper.
      Some of these concertos may have originated from Bach's Weimar period (1708-1717), when Bach was concertmaster at the ducal court in Weimar.
      Unknown to Bach, the margave lacked the resources to perform these concertos. The margrave was financially dependent on his nephew, the king in Prussia. The king had cut the music budget to spend more money on his military and political ambitions. In cutting the music budget, the king dismissed his capella of virtuoso musicians, and when Prince Leopold learned of this, he hired them, just in time for Bach to direct them.
      The notion that poor little Bach composed the Brandenburgs from scratch just for the margrave is ignorant nonsense.

    So delightful! Seeing this performed at such high tempo, flawlessly, is like watching someone free climbing or engaging in a dangerous extreme sport-a single flaw would mean the end-and yet is executed perfectly!

    I fell in love with the harpsichord the first time I heard Sir Elton's studio version of 'Skyline Pigeon' off the album Empty Sky. What a beautiful instrument.
    The energy and enthusiasm of these musicians is INFECTIOUS! Loved this! Bach rules.

    listening to this on acid is incredible.
    every note is crystal clear, like the music is coming from inside your head, like a musical thought but loud and clear.
    As you listen, it makes you realize the beauty of Bach, not just because of the music theory behind, but the genius way the voices are dynamized in timbre, intensity and tempo.
    The voices just overlap into depth and layers so perfectly.

    My favorite piece to play when I was in Orchestra, in high school and college. This performance is amazing.
    I went to an open house at my high school about 20 years after I graduated, the orchestra was there, and I got to sit in with them to play this... on the same school Cello from back then. My fingers still remembered all the notes, it was delightful Even my Orchestra teacher was still there (ready to retire), it was great playing for him one last time.
