  • Selmer sent me two gorgeous Privilege Model 67B (black) bass clarinets to try out - I am keeping one! I made an "unboxing" video with the help of my pal Andy Stevens (bass clarinetist of the Colorado Symphony) showing them being taken out of the box and case, examined and played. We even play some sort of duets near the end with two black bass clarinets. I hope that you enjoy it as much as it was to make as we unveil these remarkable instruments.

I’ve never seen a full scale review of this instrument! Thank you so much for this.

I love the richness & glow of the silver plate Selmer uses on the 67 so these wouldn't be for me, but I agree that they're stupendously crafted instruments. Could be wrong, but I think the bottom billet is in 2 pieces--the join is visible where you're pointing out the screw posts at around 10:07. (because of Blackwood scarcity I doubt suitable single billets can even be found any more, I *think* the Buffet bc's are 2 pieces in the lower joint too.) But really, who cares--it's a beautiful instrument and my thanks for doing the unboxing!! Feel free to do a "2 years along" update on the horn! ETA: Pam at Muncy Winds is the best!!! I buy from her whenever I can.

As I sit here with my old beatup Vito bass clarinet that I am borrowing from my highschool band, watching this and wondering if I will ever be able obtain one of these beautiful instruments one day...

Thank you so much the two of you for your beautiful playing. I have played the LeBlanc low c instrument since the 1960s. Of course they don't exist now the solar it's wonderful what a sound you get on it. The Selmer bass clarinet was said to be the bass clarinet here once upon a time now the buffet instrument seems to have taken over. Why is that? I tried a Selmer Priviledge clarinet in my local store and thought it was fabulous I have played Selmer saxophones for many years and I personally believe they are unsurpassed. Selmer should put this video on their website. Thank you so much and God bless you both - Bill - UK

Thank you for sharing you unboxing experience with us. Those Selmers are amazing, and a comparable rival to the BC. As to your unsecured delivery, its typical UPS slackers. They do the same with my Amazon packages. I live in an apartment, and they've just left my boxes sitting in the lobby for anyone to take as the exit the building. Lucky, I have a decent enough neighbor that noticed, and brought it to my unit. Something I already paid for through Amazon.
In other news, bass clarinet cases are really not very attractive. Not much more style than that rectangle box they were shipped in. Most of them look like they were designed in the 1950s. You'd think that by this date and time they'd offer something more ballistic and with retractable wheels, and a compact version for short sojourns. Anyway, I know Selmer isn't a case maker, but there are dedicated case manufactures they could very easily contract out to. Even in the 1970s their clarinet cases has some style.
